  • Can you port your number for these SIMS?

    • +1

      Short answer, no.
Long answer, I did manage this after 2 weeks complaining to Telstra after a similar offer last year. The booklet in the package says you can. However, Telstra shops and Telstra tecxhs online all say this is now no longer possible. Bottom line I pushed the false advertising claim without much success (did not try the ombudsman). Then managed to find a helpful tech who did it this way. Got a third (new) blank SIM card, registered purchased SIM card, transferred my old number (including longlife acct and credit) to new blank SIM card, and transferred the $30 credit from newly purchased SIMcard to blank SIM card. Whole exercise took 3 hours of both my time and techs time. Never again.

    • I ported my number to Telstra Prepaid from Vodafone a couple of weeks ago using one of these sims.

  • Does this offer(i mean sim activation) have an expiration date?

  • +1

Does anyone know if these SIMs can be used for data in a modem (ie: I want to buy the 12GB/12 months data recharge, can it be applied to these SIMs)?

  • +16

Do not buy this, please. I want NextG's data bandwidth all to myself. Go crowd the Optus/Vodafone networks instead :)

  • $30 expires in 1 month? I recalled buying one of those before.. and the credit only lasts 1 month - even though I picked the Long Life Plan.

I guess that's why you can get them for $10 each.

  • Does anyone know whether you can activate these as ipad data sims? (and cut the sim in size yourself)

    • i'll might buy a couple of them tomorrow and try ;)

    • Yes you can.
      1. You need to cut the SIM into a microSIM.
      2. Activate the Telstra prepaid phone service. Then buy browser packs ($20 - 700M for 30 days or $10 - 200M for 30 days).
      3. Then you can use it for data (without browser pack, your $30 goes down too quickly).
Alternatively, visit Telstra shop and ask them to swap/change your SIM into a Micro SIM.

      • could you purchase the $150 365 day data plan and put it on this sim?

        • Why not use the TPG $1 a month pay as you go SIM? IMO it's easily the best data plan for the iPad (as long as you don't mind Optus - which isn't bad).

    • You can - but make sure you activate the SIM card before you put it into the iPad. Make sure you buy the data packs as well before putting it into the iPad.

I did this last time when the offer was on at Woolworths.

    • i want to buy ipad data (i.e. 12GB for $150) so I presume this has to be activated as ipad sim not as prepaid phone service to be able to purchase ipad data???

    • http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/41672 isn't this one better for ipad? it comes with microsim and its pretty cheap?

      • +1

apparently Telstra's NextG network has the best coverage+speed.

  • Can I use it in iphone4?

    • +1

Yes. Just need to cut the sim into micro sim size (or visit a Telstra store to get it changed - I think you will need to activate the service before the SIM change/swap though).

      To get 3G data, buy browser packs ($20 - 700M for 30 days or $10 - 200M).

$30 credit will only last for 1 month.

  • an important question waiting for a serious answer:
will it (somehow) expire in three months if i do NOT activate it?

have friends coming from overseas for holiday in June…

    • +2

If there anything like the 2 dollar sim I got today they don't expire for a few years. Mine says 2014.

    • +2

Expiry date is on the outside of the package. Typically a year or two away.

      • thanks guys for confirmation.
will pick up one. $10 for $30 face value, it is not often in australia where even a sim card costs you money.

    • the one i got yesterday says it expires dec 2013 ;)

  • +1

Damn.. just ported and bought a 2 dollar sim today… suppose I could buy a few packs of these and port over and over again! VALUE!

    • Can you really do like this? Telstra wouldn't port to existing account.

      • Well I did. And it's all working now! :)

Will pick up one of these kits maybe and give it a go once I'm out of credit.

        • surprise! Did you port out and port back?

  • Perfect timing, thanks!

  • Can you use the $30 recharge included in this on the long life plan, and have it lasting for 6 months?

    • I was wondering this too. If so might move my parents over to it (and port their numbers over)

  • +1

You could activate these sims and transfer the credit to your existing Telstra Pre-Paid Service using 'Credit Me2U'. Makes for a cheap re-charge if you wanna muck around doing it.

    • More info on how to do it plz?

    • That's pretty damn cool! Definitely picking one up now!

    • I don't think it's going to work, because:
"There is a 25c charge for each successful credit transfer."

This means your $30 becomes $29.75, so you can't get a $30 prepaid plan anymore, you have to go one whole step down and have money leftover which will expire unused. (Unless you have some credit leftover in an existing Telstra prepaid account)

      • It works. I've done this before, though you can only transfer a max. of $10 per day.

        • What's the expiry date for each transfer?

        • Please tell us how it works then. If you lose $0.25 for each transfer, you won't have enough left to take up the $30 long life 6-month-expiry option anymore.

          1. When you activate the sim card, you will automatically have $30 dollars credit.
          2. Do a $10 Credit Me2U
          3. Next day do another $10 Credit Me2U
          4. Next day do a $9.25 Credit Me2U
          5. Throw away the new sim card
          6. Enjoy the cheap credit on your real sim card

    Here's something cool.
You can buy these for $10 and then you get $30 credit that you can use for App purchases.

Tested and working on Nokia's Ovi Store.

You can purchase $30 of apps for $10. Telstra foots the bill.

  • is the sim pack available at all Coles national wide?
Coles at fountain gate said they sold out last month meaning no stock at all, arggggggg

    • Coles southgate sylvania didn't have any today…

  • Bought 2 at Cole Rhodes.

  • Anyone know which coles sells these in Melb?
Chapel St Prahran didn't have any yesterday..

    • I bought one at Coles South Melbourne

  • This deal is misleading. When you buy one of these sims, you get $30 credit (at the standard pre-paid call rate). Even if you choose the pre-paid cap+ offer with $220 of extra credit you will not get it on the inital sim activation. You will only get the extra $220 on your NEXT recharge of $30. Also yes you can port your number to this easily. Same goes for the long life, you'll get six months expiry on your next $30 recharge.

  • Yes,this deal is MISLEADING. I have just bought one thinking that I was gonna get the bonus credits.Only to find out that all I was getting is $30 credit.Grrr…I am so pissed off

  • But I can still get the 700MB browse pack for just $10, right?

    • 700MB pack costs 20$
