  • Anyone know if the 54G2 is as good as the 54G and can take DD-WRT firmware? If so, very good price… I don't even need one atm but still tempted…

    • +1

I bought the 54G2 for $16 buck a couple months ago when they had their last sale. Put DD-WRT firmware on it and wirelessly connect to my modem upstair. I have it sitting in my dinning room, hooking up with Xbox360 and Samsung bluray player via Ethernet (still have 2 Ethernet ports free). The whole house is DLNA networked and connected wirelessly. Can not be happier with $16 spent compare to purchase separately wireless adaptor for Xbox360 and Samsung.

I have had DD-WRT running on the 54G2 for quite sometime too. Off the top of my head I believe a cut down version firmware has to be used on the 54G2 due to smaller memory on the router.

I noticed many posters recommending wireless bridge mode for extending networks. This is not recommended for two reasons:
      1) Difficult to establish due unless router on the other end of bridge is of similar manufacturer and make/model
      2) Operating in wireless bridge mode will effectively half your available bandwidth

A better approach is to use "Client Mode": http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Client_Mode which is easier when mixing router manufacturers. It also does not result in loss of bandwidth.

According to the example yes it does the job.

  • i was in the market for a gigabit switch so i picked up the wrt310n for $59.

great deal. cheapest price staticice had it for was $99 at wireless1, next price up was $159.

hopefully i get a little extra wireless range too with N

edit: can run the dd-wrt firmware too!

    this router cannot run dd-wrt

  • Is WRT310N a good reliable router? Read on cnet that it drops out a lot, and heats up.

    • Looking at that one too. Cnet gave it a good review, though most users were negative. Sounds like if you put DD-WRT on it it solves the connectivity issues, most users reported it working well after doing that.

  • my wireless experience is limited to your standard wireless setup, so excuse my noobish question:

i have a billion 7800NL as my modem/router. can i buy one of these wireless-N routers, install it behind my tv to connect various media devices (wired), and then have the wireless-N router connect to my 7800NL over wireless to connect to the internet? is this "bridging" (connecting two wireless routers together)?

if so, which one would work well for this?

reason for doing this would be instead of buying wireless USB sticks for all of them.

    sorry for noob question!

    • this would work but require some skill to set up

i have a model better than the 310 and it's fine on ddwrt

wouldn't bother if i was forced to use the linksys oem firmware

      • thanks, maybe it would be better for me to just shell out for the wireless adapters. might cost a bit more, but would simplify the setup.

it would be handy to have two wireless access points (one upstairs, one downstairs), but the 7800NL is doing a pretty good job covering thw whole house by itself.

        • Some of the new gen. of wireless routers can now run as wireless repeaters. They will connect to your main router wirelessly and extend the wireless range at the same time. Obviously, you can still connect to the repeater using wire.

I used to use wireless bridge method, but now switched to wireless repeater setup.

Though DD-WRT is very good, some of the newer routers (e.g. Asus RT-N13U) has wireless repeater mode built in and come with a USB port as well. The main downside for RT-N13U is lack of gigabit switch (only 100Mbits).

  • UPDATE: The WRT54G2 is quickly selling out.

  • is the linksys WRT310N V1 or V2?

  • Just bought the WRT310N, pretty cheap Wireless N and Gigabit router

  • nice deals, picked up the wrt54g2.

  • I run DD-WRT micro on a WRT54G2 at home, pretty darn easy.
When it says to do the 30/30/30 reboot multiple times DO IT, otherwise you sit there waiting for ages.

  • @ ideasman:just working on it now. Base of model does not state the firmware version.

    • thanks W1.. here's a little help.

V1 has a serial number prefix of CSF0
V2 has a serial number prefix of CSF1

      • Cool, definitely V1 then.

  • The Linksys WRT54G running DD-WRT is as solid as Chuck Norris' abs.

  • So can it run DD-WRT so I can use it as a newtwork adaptor for my XBOX 360?

    • yep I think it is called client-bridge mode

  • +1

Sounds like Cisco/Linksys have dropped the ball on this range. The amount of problems people are having is piss poor (especially for a networking bigwig such as Cisco and they have now branded their Linksys items as Cisco too so you'd expect Cisco quality). Ignore the Cnet reviewer's review, pay attention to the actual users reviews. I was bitten by this on my last wireless router purchase. Ignored the user's reviews and what issues they were getting and just bought it on recommendation from the reviewer. In the end, the same issues stated by users I was getting too.

  • +2

For the WRT310N, from the Linksys website: "If there is no version number besides the model number it means that is version 1". So it is V1.

  • So running as a wireless bridge - can i have any wireless router as my primary router or do i need two of these routers?

Edit: i'm referring to the WRT54G2

    • Any wireless router should work, this router just acts like a network card as far as the other router is concerned.
Still need to install DD-WRT onto this router though

  • SOLD OUT - Bugger !@

  • WRT54G2 SOLD OUT

    • Will you be getting any more at that price? I'll definitely buy one…

  • How is the delivery time? Would I get it by friday?

  • Noooooo..! I missed the WRT54G2. I've been looking for a cheap DD-WRT capable unit for a while.

  • Got one how long will shipping take? :)

    • +1

During checkout it said the estimated delivery time is 2 days

  • damn, I want the WRT54G2, not interested in other :(

  • Damnit. Sold out.
I had one of these a while ago but it died.
    Did it's job perfectly.

    • Did it's job perfectly.

yes Ozb did its job perfectly

  • Sweetcakes, a cheap WRT310N!

  • so is the WRT310N worth it?

    • just depends on what you need

    • not going to find a cheaper 300Mbps Wireless N router anywhere else!
You could find a few 150Mbps ones but not full Wireless N speeds

      • is it 300mbps or 150mbps? The whirlpool info said the 310n was not 300 capable.

        With dd-wrt it is ?

Edit: Google tells me it does…whirlpool must be out of date.

  • solid wireless connection is one and dd-wrt support would be great….

  • For the WRT310N, if i use DD-WRT and extending it to other wireless router, will i still be able to use my laptop to connect to the wireless?

  • Pity stock levels didn't reflect the sale period better. sale open to 3rd April, but the WRT54G2 sells out in 2 hours.

  • Seems there is some more stock - I just ordered successfully (17:25) - and the site still said there were five left. (wrt54g 2)

  • Do any of the Linkysys routers support ADSL2?

Looking at the WRT310 but it's a bit confusing..I don't think they do since they're older models.

    • +1

These routers don't come with ADSL2+ modems. They will support ADSL2+ modems, cable modems. WRT310 has gigabit ethernet support, which is more than enough for ADSL2+ (since ADSL2+ cannot even reach 100Mbits/sec).

      • Thanks. I'm looking at expanding my internet upstairs - so I guess I could buy one of these to install next to my PC, and just plug in my current ethernet connection..then create a new wireless access point for the PS3 etc.

Just thinking though - does having 2 routers make things too complicated? Or can I just configure this one to piggyback off my existing Billion device?

  • I have a samsung LED TV (model UA46C7000). It's in the lounge room, but there is no internet connection wall outlet there.

Only have internet in the bedroom, and don't want to have to run a long ethernet cable to the TV.

Anyone have any idea how I could setup the TV using a router to pick up internet from my other modem/router in the bedroom?

I'm a "technology challenged" - and this is beyond my skill level at present.

Any tech guru solutions would be awesome!

  • If I wanted to set up a wired repeater, would I be able to use two of the same router? Or would the router ip addresses conflict?

    • if u r using dd-wrt or similar open source software, the router/gateway have unique ip addresses so you can manage them. WDS (wireless distribution system) works rather well once you get the hang of it.

  • WOW fastest delivery EVER.
    ordered yesterday at 3 pm.
Got it today at 11 am.!
    amazing

    • still waiting for mine =[

Could this be considered "bait advertising" http://www.accc.gov.au/content/item.phtml?itemId=815756&node…

  • paid last night and got email with aussie post tracking number today. very efficient. just realised that aussie post has email notification for tracking items in transit, thats cool.

    • hmmm i paid 2 days ago and have received anything yet :(

      • Yeah, me either. What payment method did you use flyingtrapeze? I paid by CC.

        • cc

        • +1

          i used cc too

EDIT : I just called them up. they said it will be dispatched today so yeah. Hopefully all good.

    • mine arrived tonight, well done to both wireless1 and aussiepost

      • still nothing for me :(

        • did you get an email confirming your order?

        • got a email with Wireless 1 Online Payment Notification as subject

  • I've received my WRT310N, got DD-WRT Standard running on it. Still waiting for the second one I ordered so I can bust it apart and start hardware modding it.

  • I ordered the WRT54G2 on Friday 30/3/11 12:30 when their system was showing ">10 in stock" . Paid by CC yet all I got was my receipt of payment. No shipment notification yet and when I called Monday they said it would be shipped out Tuesday but Thursday today and still nothing.

Considering the item was in stock on clearance why the big delay in shipping? I'm getting the feeling they may have sold more than they had in stock especially since the WRT310N seem to have been shipped out same day.

  • payed by bank transfer. nothing yet.

  • Thanks everyone for the feedback. To those who have paid and seemed to have missed out, please contact us at:

sales at wireless1 dot com dot au.

  • offering Belkin instead.

  • Anyone got their purchases yet? Im still waiting for mine, sent them an email 5-6 days ago and still no reply…

    • Received mine early April for WRT310N
