  • Come-on Amazon! Price match please!

    • Yeah would be nice, but no chance as Newegg are going coupon code

  • Does anyone know what is the drive inside this?

    • +1

I think it is white which = Red.
      It was a while back.

    • I have a couple I bought recently, is there any way to tell without cracking them open?… Is there any apps that can analyse them?

      • +2

Yeah CrystalDiskInfo will give you the serial number. But WD only make Reds/Golds in 8TB so it's most probably a 5400rpm white label red helium

        • non helium now. you see an open hole instead of the valve covering the hole.
          It's a cheaper air version.

        • Mine are: WD80EMAZ-00WJTA0

          • @FLICKIT: do you know what "the 3.3volt situation" is about?
The people in the threads all know what he's talking about so it's never explained

            • @bobvegas: I'm not too sure, I was just reading about that… It seems some of them don't spin up if the 3.3v is connected, some people say it's only an issue with the older ones.. some people put tape over the 3.3v pins if they have the issue… Looking at my sata power connectors some have the 3.3v, some dont…There's a stack of threads on Reddit about them…

Also, it seems these are helium:
              The helium version is WD80EMAZ-00WJTA0.
              The air version is WD80EMAZ-00M9AA0.

        • Thanks, Should I bite the bullet or wait for a 7200rpm external drive for my NAS.

          How is this compared to
          https://m.newegg.com/global/au/product/N82E16822235160 ($20 more)

  • need those Toshiba 8tb 7200rpm with this price

  • Is this $20 better than the Seagate?

    • There are some trade offs - the WD is likely to be faster as there is a good chance that the Seagate will contain a slower SMR drive however that is not certain. Also a lot of people swear by WD over Seagate based on reliability however a lot of other people quote industry stats showing failure rates are similar across the brands.

I personally prefer the faster drive for $20 though would prefer to buy from Amazon if things go wrong. Not sure what Newegg is like for returns.

  • How do these compare to the WD Easystore 8TB? This one from Best Buy works out at a similar price with shipping https://www.bestbuy.com/site/wd-easystore-8tb-external-usb-3…

    • I have my doubts that you can get that drive unless you are in the US or have people there to get it for you.
The drives inside the units would be the same and I'd say there is little to no difference between the products. If you know of a way to get these to Aus please let me know.

    • Even if you can buy them at USD130, shipping would bring them up to same price or more then this deal.
