IKEA Genomklyd French Door Fridge/Freezer $999 (Half Price) in Black Friday Sale @ IKEA

310

Part of Ikea Black Friday, but thought worth calling out https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/418956

Huge French Door fridge for half usual price. Dont honestly know how this compares to other fridges, but given Ikea usually reasonably priced to start with, half price seems like it must be cheap!

This is part of Black Friday / Cyber Monday deals for 2018

  • Who is the oem?

It seems like a pretty terrible fridge. Two Star rating, two year warranty.

Unlikely a fridge will die, given their basic design and motor
          In a oil sump.

I’m not too convinced about star ratings on fridges. I previously had a whirlpool fridge, it was rubbish. I got a huge new LG French door fridge with plumbed water, because it fitted my gap perfectly. Anyway, I wasn’t convinced about LG, because it’s not a fridge brand, and I’m pretty sure this one had a shit energy rating. Turns out it’s been the best fridge I’ve ever bought. It’s very energy efficient, way more so than the smaller Whirlpool fridge, it’s keeps food so fresh that you can’t tell if vegetables are past their used by dates, and keeps things like ice cream
At the perfect temperature, so it’s never too hard and never melted.

          • @[Deactivated]: Yeah LG's fridges are surprisingly decent. Reasonably priced and quiet too, unlike some which have very noisy cooling fans. They also have a decent service network with parts in stock so if they die you;re not waiting two weeks to get them fixed.

          • @[Deactivated]: The only lemon fridge I've bought was a Whirlpool too. I noticed it had a Samsung compressor/motor only after the fact.

LG has been making fridges for half a century.

        • This is one of the things in life that we shouldn't bargain with.

          Imagine a week without this.

2 star energy rating….might be cheap to buy, but you'll lose this saving and more on power bills.

      True.

WE NEED A DEAL ON ENELOOPS

WE NEED A FRIDGE THAT RUNS ON ENELOOPS. MADE BY XIAOMI.

With the secret call home feature to send all your fresh food habits to Chinese intelligence.

    • Don't look at the number of stars. Look at the KWH consumption per year. The number is on the Star rating sticker. I bought a 2 star Westinghouse but the KWH consumption was better than similar sized fridges with 3 or 4 stars.

      • No, but this uses 683 kWh per year!

Some other fridges are around half that!

        • If you want to pay $500 to $800 more for that energy efficiency. Then hope your fridge has the right environment, ie climate, ventilation, etc to run at max efficiency for those savings. If that's all good then all you have to do wait 10+ years to make back that price difference.

I don't know how comfortable I am with assembling a fridge.

  • At $999 it’s priced close to where it should be for a Whirlpool fridge. It’s tiny!

  • 680kwh per year. That's around $200 a year!!!!

  • They charge $20 for pick up….wtf

  • IKEA: Good design/look. Bad quality. Moderately priced.

I'd skip this and go for a fridge from a more well known manufacturer that actually makes fridges and has a way higher energy star rating.

    • Ikea don't manufacture appliances, they OEM. Their cooking appliances are made by Electrolux, the other appliances by Whirlpool.

  • So what's the best power efficient two door fridges?
