Ever since the Oreo update nothing works properly. Any decoded audio randomly cuts out for a second or two. Sometimes it just refuses to decode audio altogether and requires a reboot. Half the time when it wakes up its stuck in a pink / green screen bug requiring a reboot. Sometimes it just exits the app for no reason at all. Sometimes it throws a network error and stops playing. Often doesn't show up in the list of chromecast devices. Could go on but it's not in a good state at the moment.
Mine and my Dad's the same. I bought a shield a couple of months back and it's an absolute gem.
I bought my Mi Box in September 2016, on release day from Walmart, so it's had a good run, but time to retire it now.

I have no issues with my 2 mi boxs with android 8, they play netflix, youtube, kodi, they turn on and off the tv with no issues.
This is also the new model, not the old model so you cant compare old with new
