  • How does this google home mini compare to a iPhone using Siri?

    • +5

I've found it works much better than any phone assistant. Works 90% of the time, compared to 50% on my iPhone/Android.

      • -8

        Works 90% of the time

        That sounds impractical and annoying.

        • +10

You probably shouldn't get one then.

    • +4

They say Siri has lower IQ/AI than Google

    • +3

We have 6 LIFX bulbs with HomeKit functionality, some native some using Homebridge running on a RPi.
Siri is INSANELY fast compared to our Google Home Minis.
I actually feel like Google has gotten worse recently. Eg “hey google turn on my bedroom light”, 3 seconds later, “ok turning off your bedroom light”.

Siri is near instant. Less than a second and the operation is done. Google Home Mini takes ~3 seconds on average.

Just my findings but it’s been this way for the last year.

      • I find Siri tunes on my Lifx bulb good just sometimes Siri via my iPhone X doesn’t hear or understand me

      • +4

Me: "OK google, turn off my lights"

        Google assistant: "Turning off Wi-Fi"

        *Lights turn off

        pikachu.jpg

      • I also find Siri/HomeKit to be much quicker to respond than either google home mini or Alexa (echo dot and Sonos one). Apple Watch series 4 works well with raise to speak.

      • I too find Google to be quite slow now. I don’t use Siri and HomeKit stuff but using Alexa on the Echo Dot is so much quicker than Google. Understands me better and performs the actions much faster.

      • Alexa is the same and instant compared to Googles 3 or 4 seconds before she says she will do it and then does, whereas with Alexa the light is on by the time she says "OK". Alexa is also simpler to add new devices and functions and there are a huge number of skills available. Alexa seems to have become the most popular device in the USA.

That said the Google system is a lot more practical for day to day use with it's integration of shopping lists, calendar, notes etc with Android phones. Google also understands better and is way more knowledgeable without having to manually add skills, and remember the commands. Google also has great chromecast support with a lot of devices. Best bet is a mix of Google home and Alexa devices. Alexa is supported by a lot of products.

      • If it can find your light it would know it was off.

        • It can. It’s just gotten bad.
I might need to try the Alexa dot then. Wonder if that audible offer is still on.

      • +1

Yeah my Google Home Minis have unquestionably gotten slower and don’t hear me as well over the past year.

        • Glad it’s not just me, I guess.

        • Sometimes it could be due to congestion with your internet connection? Or too many devices connected at the same time? My experience is with Amazon Echo which sometimes quickly understand what I am asking sometimes have to repeat it many times and slower speaking.

          • @yht: Nope, we have very fast wifi. It’s legit just gotten slower. As muzzakus mentioned it could be cause it’s waiting for more commands.

          • @yht: I have exceptionally good internet, I know that's not the reason.

        • Mine hear just as well. I "feel" it might be a bit slower, but considering I am human it is more likely I am fooling myself. They always took a while, and I wish I had bothered to set up my Amazon units for home control sooner than I did. You really need both to have a proper experience with a wide range of devices.

      • I can tell you why google has gotten slower. It’s waiting for you to say more. You can chain commands now in one sentence just by saying and do this and do that. I suspect it can be switched off but I haven’t looked as I like it.

        • You have been able to chain commands since at least last christmas when I got mine.

          • @Major Mess: Incorrect, feature only hit about 3 months ago….

            https://www.theverge.com/2018/6/12/17453960/google-home-mult…

            • @muzzakus: I was thinking of the context feature where you can continue questions that relate to the previous and Home remembers the subject.

Google home has also started to have issues with MiHome, devices work once when added and then can't find them. Home Assistant has stopped a couple of times, but that was infrastructure changes and HA got updated. I wish they would just sort the system and leave it for a while, or better still dump the requirement to contact all of the third party providers. Some like xiaomi have the option to enable LAN access, but Google and Alexa can't take advantage of it.

    • Significantly better in my experience and always works at least for the past 6 months I've had it.

    • +3

Siri on iphone x is terrible - works 50% of the time accuracy wise

Google mini pretty good so far. Heaps better

      • +2

Nfi why u got negged for stating your experience but then again u spoke out at the mighty Apple… But yes we have many siri enabled devices at home but once you use mini you do Find siri much more frustrating…

  • Just got one! can't wait to try this out. thx for posting

    • I thought it would be stupid but now it's how kids turn on music… Lately we've moved on from music to playing trivia which is quite fun with the kids… :) enjoy!

  • The Apple HomePod needs to be a mini and cheaper!!

I don’t want a speaker as I use Sonos, I just want a google home mini but in a Apple version

    • Why tho

Google Assistant works on iOS too, just have to download off the App Store

    • +1

      I too want this.

  • Great find OP!

  • based on the name "white" that means you can't change the bulb's colour right?

    • +1

      Yes. Brightness only

      • oh thnaks…sounds less enticing now…

        • +1

The colour changing one is $70

        • +1

The colour just becomes a gimmick after a while though I appreciate the colour temperature control you get on the colour or the 'dusk and dawn' version. Not sure how the white is on the white.

  • Thanks OP! Just ordered one.

  • Great find OP! Ordered one.

  • Actually very tempting to get an Aqua one. Chalk one is kind of a boring colour..

  • Can this be bought in store or only online with collection in store?

  • Thanks OP. Grabbed one.

  • Hmm, not sure whether to get this deal or the free from from Telstra with any (cheap) Android phone.

    • i get it from both :D

    • I got one with $49 Telstra
And two with this offer. Now 3 minis and a hub

  • +1

Don't forget, you can get a cheapo prepaid phone from Telstra, and get a free Google Home Mini.

So the Telstra Essential Plus is $49, and then you get the Google Home Mini for free.

    • -1

Phones don't normally have far field array microphones to year you on the other side of the room

      • ..it comes with a google home mini.

        • Indeed, this is a similar deal, just you get a phone instead of the light bulb.

    • It depends whether you want a worthless phone or a bulb.

  • Cheers OP, this was in good time for christmas! Bought 3 and got 3 free bulbs on top, awesome price :D

  • +1

met the owners of LIFX last week.
highly impressed by the guys I met!

  • Meh.
Plenty of new Google Home Minis available on Gumtree or eBay for $40 or less, from people who got them as part of a ebay plus or Telstra mobile promotion.

edit: I suppose the smart globe is worth $9 easily enough, so maybe this deal is worth it.

  • +1

Dont need either of these things but man that's a good price

  • I don't get the bulb….you have to keep the light switch on for it to work? but by the time you get google or the app to get it to switch on…..you could have just flicked the switch?

    • +5

have you never climbed into bed after a long day and then realised you left the light on? nothing worse! but now you can just tell google to turn them off.

Can also set up the light to turn on when alarm goes off.

Adds protection if you're scared of the dark, can turn lights on from your car before you get inside lol.

      • +1

I use my Google Assistant on my phone to turn on my light at home before I come home as a sign to my family that I'll be home very soon

      • climbed into bed after a long day and then realised you left the light on? nothing worse! but now you can just tell google to turn them off.

This is all I use my google home for (but I do this every night). Great except for the 1 in 50 times it doesn't work (lifx wifi problem) and you need to get out of bed anyway…

Given its summer I tend to turn on my lights and AC when I'm 10 minutes from home using my phone. Nice to come home to a place that's not a hotbox and lights already on…

        • how are you controlling your AC?

          • @ltwo: Broadlink integrates directly with Google Home. I use Broadlink RM Minis to control our air conditioning.

          • @ltwo: I have two older AC's which I use Sensibo units to turn on/off. It's pretty quick and responsive (basically instant), but you basically want to only control your A/C with the app or browser as it's basically a remote replacement, and some AC's only have an on/off toggle (you can tell it that the A/C is actually on when it thinks it's off but it can't work out what the AC is doing by itself unless you did it with the app).
            https://sensibo.com/products/sensibo-sky

I also have a newer Mitsubishi AC that has an add on gadget where it has an app that feeds stats / room temperature back to the app. The only annoying thing is that it connects out to the internet and polls for changes every minute, so it can take 60 seconds to respond. (This matters less than you think though) It also has some cool things like only turning on under certain conditions (eg, if it gets above x degrees, power on etc)..

    • That will depend on where the switches are located, what you have in your hands, and how you have programmed the app. Do your lights turn themselves on automatically when you return home? Do they vary their brightness according to the time? Can you control them without leaving the recliner?

    • You keep the switch on so there's always a supply of electricity to it, but you can get Google or the app to turn it on without touching the switch. You don't even need to be at home to turn on your lights; I could be interstate but still turn on my lights at home with my Google Assistant or the Lifx app.

    • I have a few yeelights at my place and it's great if you're lazy or if you have a big house. When I go to bed, I don't need to turn off any lights manually. Just one instruction to Google assistant or a click on the app and everything gets turned off.

Then there's the benefits of setting them on a schedule etc. You don't need it but it's great to have

    • +1

Great for entry light for AirBnB guests. Turn it on remotely before they arrive then they use the switch while they are there. Reset switch to on when you clean/get cleaned.

      • Don't you need a google home too as google mini alone will not be able to do this?

        • Google Home Mini IS a Google Home. Just in mini form with crappier speakers

    • Oh you of little imagination. You end up using them all the time. I haven't touched a switch for six months.

  • Thanks OP. Kids Christmas present sorted and two bulbs for me.

  • Thanks got two from in store

  • Site down. Surely this deal wouldn't of done it?

  • 1227 clicks….maybe they ran out of the globes

  • None of the 3 models links appear to be working (or intermittent). If you manage to get anything into cart wont checkout.

No idea who is upvoting the deal now, but reckon its finished.

    • Delivery seems to be backup working. In store less stock levels, your area will vary

  • +1

Just purchased one, the deal is up intermittently. Thanks OP

  • Deal worked for me 5mins ago.

  • Anyone tried setting Media Alarms on theirs in AUS? I'm specifically in the market for a device that can use Google Play Music as the alarm clock.

    • …just tried, and didn't seem to work. Am sure it will be rolled out here eventually.

      • Thanks for trying!

  • It took a lot of refreshes and crashes but mine just went through too.

  • Thanks OP got one for sons xmas present. Also Google Home on sale for $129.

  • Just got one then for pickup….

  • Anyone knows why there are few Free Google Home Mini within these few weeks ? Will the new version coming out soon or what ?

    • +1

It was the same around Xmas last year… My guess is it's Google's push to get people in their eco-system.

      It worked for me. :/

      • They must have sacrifice the price a lot with the retailer to have it sold like this.

  • Nooooo I'm so mad I found out about this too late aaa would've made a great gift!

  • Did anyone else get their order cancelled.

    • mine shipped today

  • Can't get the bulb to connect :/ it gets stuck on trying to connect

    • It's a pain trying to connect it. I have an Android and ended up using my iPad mini to connect it

  • Mine arrived today, without the globe. JB HiFi customer support responded that the bulb had to be manually added to the cart in the purchase and that they won't honour the deal.

If you are going to create a promo, why wouldn't you add the bulb to the cart with the original purchase, other than to catch people out like this?

    • To be fair, it did say you had to add the bulb to the cart in order to get the bulb for free.

    • Made the same mistake. Read it as bonus offer and assumed it was going to be included. :(

Oh well, hopefully there'll be more deals on Google home mini by end of year.
