Seagate Archive Drive in these. For people who are thinking of shucking this, research if the Archive Drive will meet your needs.
Before anybody says anything bad about Archive drives, they aren't bad, just depends on what you plan to use for it.

I've had 2 Archive drives in my NAS since they first released them, and have had 0 issues with them. Just need to know the limitations of the SMR tech that they use.
Even Western Digital has moved into using SMR on their larger >14TB HDD.

From what I've read its luck of the draw but currently a high chance its an SMR archive drive as you say.

I'm using some for media storage nas so should be adequate for me.

Yep Archive drives are great for mass storage. Not so good, for example, if you want to use them as an external HDD for your Xbox games. (if you are playing them from there)

      • For general purpose I would recommend the WD mybook 8tb which has a WD RED with TLER disabled. But problem with those is that the enclosure is poorly designed causing high rate of premature failure.

If you shuck them then there is no issues with failure.

WD is around $40 more expensive. Also same caveat around researching what it means to not have TLER and does it suit your purpose.

  • I believe all Seagate drives are SMR except Ironwolfs?

You've been warned if you own a NAS.

    • After doing some research, there is reports that WD maybe using SMR in their lower capacities also. And WD cannot tell you which ones are they even if you gave them the S/N. Only way to find out is if you do a test yourself….

      • Maybe so but the larger ones are what I'm buying, specifically models known to contain normal drives.

  • US Plug or AU? Guessing delivery from US means US?

    • +1

difficult to say, i know the Aussie ones come with multiple adaptors, where you clip in the one you need to use.

Ordered from Newegg a couple months back: US plug, no adapters.

  • Aren't these this price locally?

  • How about the warranty (both Newegg and Amazon US)?

    • +1

Seagate used to be an international warranty. Not 100% sure anymore, but you used to contact them and then they would send a freight label, or you dropped it into the logistics company and then it went to Singapore I think? Haven't had one die anywhere near the warranty period for 10+ years.
