    • +1

to be fair, the website doesn't say it's a one-day deal

  • +2

Are ther eactually any good deals there? I had a look at what they listed on there web site and there was nothing that would attracted me to go to the sale.

They had better deals at the previous super saturday sale.

        • excellent memory for such a big list. Such detail as well….considering he just happened to see a list in store

He said he FOUND A COPY. My assumption would be he brought it home and typed it up for us. Why such skepticism when somebody is doing something nice?

        • Sry, will post pics next time :) still new at this

That LG 5.1 is a good entry level surround sound system for your Mum & Dad. It's not suitable for anyone who wants a custom setup (no separate receiver/amp) but for $99 it's bloody decent. I think it's this one:

Can't get a good look at it on the ad so not 100% sure that it is.

Also in brisbane. Might go grab the 5.1 for my room :)

Note that the LG DVD Home Theatre System model no: LG HT355SD does not appear to have hdmi or optical.

    • Yes, no HDMI or optical drive. Has CD/dvd drive, USB and AUX input. Not bad, not great but for $99 great for my kids

  • +1

Anyone got a Sony A390? Is it worth buying at $496?

    • suree why not it's a cheap DSLR. Probably one of the cheapest ones from the beginner range

  • +18

Yes, I have had lots of experience with Harvey Norman, Domayne, Joyce Mayne and Clive Peeters. Gerry Harvey is the largest shareholder in the Harvey Group. Do not expect lots of bargains. You won't get bargains. Yes, you be offered the bait advertised. There will be a small amount of the advertised lines. However, the Harvey stores don't really want to sell the advertised lines, since there is no profit in them. Gerry's henchmen will want to sell you Monster leads, surge boards and extended warranties. These extended warranties cost approximately 6% of the insured item sell price for a 4 year period. Don't buy these overpriced accessories. If the store has one of the advertised lines that you want, by all means buy it. The Australian Consumer and Competition Commission (ACCC) is investigating the Harvey Group. Gerry has not become a billionaire by helping aussie battlers with great deals. This is why competition from the internet make him think he is on his way to losing his billions. Who wants to help Gerry?

      Great Post.

I went in to buy one of those samsung 2TB drives that they had cheap. The guy said if you want to keep your data and not have it crash as they have had some returns, then buy this seagate..
Pretty slick as he scared me off but I had set myself on a mission to buy an external drive..
Walked out scratching my head and bought one from
      Sorry mr Harvey….

      • +3

I bet they will say the reverse if the Seagate or WD ever goes on sale.
ie. "If you don't want data loss or crashes you shouldn't buy this Seagate, buy this more expensive Samsung instead"

        • +1

true indeed, no one can guarantee these things anyhow they can wreck no matter what brand and what model and no matter how much u paid for them

      • +1

Yep, i was told that the HD i wanted was out of stock when showing the guy the catalouge, instead handing me a WD drive. Funny that it was right in front of my eyes when he said it.

        • +1

          lol

Yep, i was told that the HD i wanted was out of stock when showing the guy the catalouge, instead handing me a WD drive

was assuming he was trying to 'sell' you the more expensive one

    • +2

I want to help Gerry! As long as I can help myself on the way out…on the wage I'm on, I'll take a bargain but I won't take a beating…

Attention all those readers who wonder how Gerry Harvey made his billions. It was from selling products in which there little price competition such as Monster brand products: HDMI cables, Digital aerial leads (what a con job) and power surge boards. Do not buy these products. The price that the Gerry Harvey Group sell these for is four times the price in the USA. But there is more: even most people in the USA think that Monster leads are over priced. If you wish to read more about Monster brand rip offs, do a google search using the words: "monster cable myths". The google search will then refer you to sites such as these:

    http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/38731070/ns/technology_and_scien…

    http://www.examiner.com/games-gear-in-denver/hdmi-cable-myth…

If every Harvey Group customer said NO to overpriced products, Gerry would go broke. Who wants to help Gerry?

    • +2

Some Monster cables are nitro injected though, doesn't that make the picture faster?

      • +5

Nitro = nitrogen, so its not faster. But the picture is softer and doesn't need to be inflated as often.

    • +1

Great findings man and yes good point

  • Just wondering am I able to hook this up to my computer and use it as 5.1?

    • No as stated above it has no 5.1 audio input such as Optical / Coaxial.

Only comes with 2 channel audio inputs. 3.5" stereo input on front and stereo Left/Right analogue input on rear.

You need to get one with toslink or coaxial optical input depending on the type of digital connector available on your pc, if you want to use one of these type of devices for 5.1 output from pc.

Alright, I just went to HN at Garden City in Brisbane and bought three of the above-mentioned stuff. Yes, this is definitely bite-advertising / loss-leader type of promotion, so you MUST NOT buy any other stuff or Gerry makes his bucks on you lol~ At Garden City you don't see the promotion prices on this things so you just have to ask the sales rep about the promotion and mention you know the promo price, then they're grab the stuff for you at the right price. I still see they put the $10 Toshiba USBs (8G) in the bin for $14 each so you need to tell them you're after the promo so get the right price. The things I bought (not after the LG 5.1 system so sorry can't tell you how good/bad it is):

1.Asus 27" Widescreen LCD Monitor (VE276Q) @ $387 - as advertised (from this price you can actually tell that HM did some research on Staticice or other price search engines, as the cheapest price you can find on Staticice for this monitor is exactly $387 in WA. So today really is just a promo on 'being normal' with regard to price, not a day for bargain hunting).

2.Toshiba 16GB USB Flash Drive (PA3875A-1MAB) @ $19 - as advertised (it's in their current catalog for $25 each, so not really a huge bargain, and the sales rep said it's limit of 2 per customer, as I do need these and I don't care about read/write speed, I bought two). These Toshiba ones look very normal/disattractive but the bang-for-buck is on their storage. Postoffice is now selling 4G other brands @ 9.99 each (but presumebly with a better speed).

3.Sony DSLR A390 Single Lens Kit (DSLRA390L) @ $465 - slightly lower than advertised price of $496 (I don't know why but the sales rep just told me this is the price, well, something extra I suppose or may be it's because they've got only one left… I intended to buy this anyways @ 496 anyways so yeah). Best price from Staticice is $567.

Yep, my sales rep did try to sell me things like HDMI cables, camera case, SD memory cards and extended warranty, but I just said I've got those already and I guess because it was like around 9:30 in the morning people just didn't have the momentum to talk/bug that much so all good. Btw the rep's name is Peter, a young guy and his customer service is pretty good though - sad I didn't buy any other 'normal' price stuff from him ~.~

Just been into QV store to get Toshiba laptop advertised $394, after waiting about 15-20 mins for a salesperson (major lack of staff for a HN store - ppl who gerry claims are the best at cust service.) i was told that they didn't have the unit, weren't going to get the unit in for a month or so…(bait advertising i think???)

Ok i said, I'll need a equivalent model for same price, guy took me to a $700(ish) toshiba with same spec but intel, and then launched into this flexi thing, where you rent the computer and pay like twice the price…FAIL! I tried to explain what i wanted, computer salesperson was a moron who did not listen to me who wanted to sell me shit i didn't want… FAIL!
the experience with the computer was a complete waste of time…

but I did get one of the LG dvd players and some really great (and cheap) marantz headphones for $79 ($199 rpp).
Was going to get a Nespresso machine but still deciding which to buy - was served by a girl named JO, who really knew what she was talking about and listened to me. She said HN stores are franchised between furniture, computers and electrical all being run seperately, and couldn't help with computers - but that i think is fair enough. Will prob go back to her to buy next week - she gave me a good price. But never going to buy a computer from HN QV.

      Got to my local JB (bourke st melbourne), asked them to do a pricematch on computer, they listened, were helpful and was offered great service, they offered me this for $435 so i bought it;

Hope ACCC sues Harvey Norman for advertising stuff they don't have in stock :)

  • I got 4 pillows from Chadstone. Seems to me worth and Made in Australia

Gerry is a very shrewd businessman, he wouldn't be where he is today otherwise, most people who can't beat their competition will usually try to join them but Gerry doesn't think in the typical mindset, being stubborn/arrogant or just inflexible in the business game can lose you millions!
as for 'add-ons', speaking from past retail experience extended warranties are the cash cow of the appliance stores these days-think about it;they cost the company nothing, are almost pure profit, take up no shop space, need no stocktake and doesn't have to be delivered-now you know why so many sales assistants will ask "do you want extended warranty with that tv/dvd/fridge" etc!

  • +1

    I got the Toshiba 16gb USB stick $19(from $59.95!!!).Just tested write speed ~13 MB/s

    • I'm a noob on this… is 13MB/s fast or slow? What's like the benchmark rate for USB stick around?

      • think should be a bit quicker than that for a Toshi brand and 16GB

      • That's decent for USB2 writing speed. But usually cheaper (not necessarily quality, but price) USB sticks tend to be slow, so that's quite good for a cheaper one.

  • Feedback please. How did Harvey salespeople react when you said no their normal price items such as: memory cards, cases, Monster cables and power boards and extended warranties?

    • +1

Ever dealt with a kid in primary school?

      • "But you see sir, these cables are high quality than the sort of cables on eBay, that's why they're so cheap. Extended warranties offer the customer peace of mind sir; we're not forcing you to buy your TV with it."

But I've never had any personal experience :P

    • John, amazing that everytime anything Harvey Norman or JB Hifi comes up you bag it, in many instances the Chadstone stores in particular, If i come in to Good guys Electrical in Chadstone who should i ask for so i can speak to you?

  • +5

God, bunch of whingers if I ever saw them.

"RUN FOR THE HILLS, RETAIL STORES ARE TRYING TO MAKE MONEYS!!!!"

      lol

I went with a friend to get the notebook but he wouldn't let us buy the notebook unless we bought the extended warranty. it scared me off. Maybe the notebook was faulty or he was desperate to make a quid, but I don't think I'll be heading back to the store.

I just want the notebook, not the extended warranty, and not the lecture.

    • +3

      Name and shame?

      • I'd consider doing so but considering Gerry Harvey is a millionare I'm sure he has very good lawyers at his disposal so I'm just going to leave it at that.

        • Gerry feels insulted. Gerry is a billionaire and he never made his money, by helping out Aussie battlers with a good deal. Instead Gerry will be known as the man who trapped Australians in a debt trap. This is why I like The Good Guys approach of "Pay Less Pay Cash". If only we had freedom of speech in Australia. Just imagine the stories I could tell you about Gerry. Oh well I will need to be patient. Gerry is an old man.

    • +2

The laptop is the bait advertising. The extended warranty is where all the profit lies. I wonder why the salesperson wanted to sell the extended warranty?

      • For the record I kept saying no but they were so persistant and would not take no for an answer. We left feeling pretty disappointed and frustrated.
