    Targeted?

    • can't see this on my Amex Discovery…

  • Got it on platinum and essentials, thanks

How much is 1500 points effectively worth?

    • +3

you beat me by 19 seconds.

    • +2

$10.5 based on regular rate $0.007/pt

How much is the 1500 reward points worth?

  • 15 dollars (1 cent per point)

  • +1

Is it still tax deductible if you're receiving something in return?

    • I don't think so.
You can't claim RMH Home Lottery for this reason.

      • +10

I believe this $60 would be tax deductible as you aren't receiving anything directly from Red Cross.

It would mean that all donations made by credit card wouldn't be tax deductible because you technically earn points from using any credit card.

    • Yes. Red Cross will provide a receipt.

    • This depends on the magnitude of the benefit. I researched this a bit, and mentioned what I found in a previous comment. Essentially, (https://www.ato.gov.au/Non-profit/Gifts-and-fundraising/Fund…)

For a contributor to claim a tax-deductible contribution, the benefit they receive must be:
      • no more than $150 and,
      • no more than 20% of the value of the contribution.

Different cards give different types of points (different values). For the Essential card, if points are used to pay off account, it is $11.12 or 18.53% of the contribution. If the points are used in a manner that nets a greater benefit than this, then I guess it is up to you to make a reasonable valuation.

Also, there is no mention that the material benefit has to come from the party that is receiving the contribution, before the stated conditions apply (in this case, Amex is providing the benefit, while Red Cross receives the entire donation).

      • The issue though is that the benefit is not for making the donation but for using an Amex card to make the donation. I just can’t see that the benefit is for the donation.

        • There are two benefits : the normal point earn, and this extra 1500 points.
Treating the normal point earn as a benefit of using an Amex card is uncontentious.
But treating this 1500 points as a benefit of using the card, is arguable and iffy, since this benefit cannot be earned for other charges (except this donation). We are discussing about a safe interpretation which is least likely to run foul of ATO rules. At the end of the day, each of us are free to use whatever interpretation we like, and hope that it will pass the ATO test, if queried.

          • @bluesky: if you use a visa to make the donation you do not get the points. The benefit is for using the Amex not for making the donation itself . But agree ATO May rule differently.

            • @grasstown:

The benefit is for using the Amex not for making the donation itself.

Yes, you raise a valid point. But might make no difference, since the rules could apply to it as also a benefit of the donation (Not mutually-exclusive).

    lol no thanks

  • +1

I think it might be targeted as i don't see it in my AMEX offers.

  • +1

I'm struggling to see the deal if the points are worth $15.

    • Only if it is tax deductible

      • +4

        Spend $60

Get back $24 (assuming 40% bracket).

        The receive $15 in points.

        Loss of $21.

This may be good if you were going to donate anyway.

    • +4

Umm…. How about just thinking that you're helping people out and looking at the 1500 points as a bonus?

  • +2

Keep in mind those with Plat Edge etc can buy 1000 MR points for $25. From this pov $60 will net you 2400 points. If merely chasing points, this is not ideal. But good for those who actually want to donate and earn some points as a bonus.

    • Hi there, how do you buy points with Plat Edge? log into your account somewhere?

      • +1

Call the number on the back of your card and speak to an operator

        • Thanks mate, good tip. Will give them a ring if I need to to up in the near future, maybe later today ;)

          • @TheMindsetTraveller: You're spot on- great for topping up if you're just short of a flight redemption. Note that points are not earnt on point purchases

  • Thank goodness i am not targeted.

  • +3

These deals really should come out in June - not November.

I don't think this deal will have many takers here, nice idea thou.
