Just saw that on their catalogue as well. Interestingly it is the same price as JB's own brand "Soniq" (46" LED TV), except Sharp is a much more established and trusted brand. You should be able to get extra warranty on this product as well.

soniq is a jb hifi brand?! i never knew.
did jb hifi buy them exclusively? i'm pretty sure i remember kmart and stuff selling soniq a few years back

      • +1

Actually I am not too sure where I heard about it — but Soniq and Okano are just two cheap brands that you find on JB Hi-Fi. Even Soniq's website shows a big JB logo.

        • Jb probably has some kind of distribution rights. i doubt they own the brand, or they would be pushing it to the madhouse and they don't really push one brand all that much. at least thats how i feel when i walk in.

        • well whichever way jb is the only place youll find soniq (afaik)

  • Might just go to local jb and check it out. Great price for an LED TV!! Wonder if it'll fit in the car.
Interesting that it's only $5 more expensive then the Sharp 40" LCD (non LED) TV going for $991 in the same catalogue.

      thAn :)

I wonder if anyone will buy the 40"

  • great deal but not too sure of how good this tv is. So tempting to buy this one for the bedroom as I already have a 46" Samsung 6900 LED model. Will go to the jb store to check it out.

    • I bought one of these when they first came out. The menu system isn't as fancy as say Sony's or Samsung's (nor is the remote for that matter), but the screen performs well and looks amazing (we like to think the money was spent here instead of on shiny gimmicks). The 7-day EPG is also so useful, we're still really happy with it!

  • Just a FYI for anyone thinking to pick it up from the store. The box dimensions quoted to me are 1200mm x 800mm x 30mm. With a little nudging it will fit in the back seat of my car as my seats don't fold down in the boot =(. Idk the quality of this tv, but for the price it is hard to beat and i was just in the market for one. Going down to jb now to check it out.

    • 30mm? Or 300mm? Even a flat screen seems unlikely to have a box depth of only 30mm.

      • It would be 300mm. I've seen this model instore before and even though its an LED, its still quite chunky compared to other LED LCDs. At least 150mm deep.

        Cheers

        • Sorry I mean 300mm box depth. Btw I ended up getting the tv. Sales rep through in one of those Belkin screen spray and microfibre cloth for free. $19.95 value.
Got home and just had a play around. I must say compared to my bravia the picture Quality wasn't as good on dtv and blu-ray. These are on the out of box settings so haven't calibrated it yet. So dont go thinking you will vet samsung/sony quality picture out of it. But for the price it is a good buy.

        • Hmmm that's interesting seeing as how most Sony TVs use Sharp panels.

        • lol bigosmallo.
Had a laugh since you didn't know that Sony used (some) Sharp panels 5 hrs ago, then learned, then reposted it like a old fact!

          Gold.

Hehe… just showing what I've learnt from this bargain. :P

    • Just buy it online for free delivery?

      • +1

Then you can't haggle a lower price or extra warranty.

  • Great deal, particularly if this uses a panel from Sharp's Kameyama plant in Japan and comes with 3 years warranty as standard.

  • Sharp panel is still one of the best in the market. I can't believe LED dorp to this proce so quick, especially for such a good brand.

    • It's a LED-backlit screen not a LED panel. So it is not that slim. But the quality looks extremely good. I use the 32 inches Sharp LCD and am very happy with it.

      • Not slim but you won't notice it unless you want to mount it to the wall.
It's still slimmer than the entry level Sony models ;)

      • i thought all LED panels on the market are LCDs. even the thin ones u mention . those LCDs but are edge lit which brings the thickness down. this one is backlit which im theory should give a more uniform picture.

        • +2

Yes, LED backlighting is one of the biggest marketing scams along with 3D TV and yellow pixels. Companies need a reason to get the masses to upgrade their junky LCDs with other, newer, junky LCDs. LED does nothing for image quality. Only RGB LED backlighting offers an improvement, but it's expensive and was limited to high end Sony XBRs a few years ago. It's the closest I've seen to CRT quality on an LCD.

  • How does Sharp stack up to the big players like Sony, Panasonic, Samsung etc?

    • +1

Sharp is a big player just like the other brands you mention; they're the biggest selling brand of TV in Japan, and one of the very few brands that actually make LCD panels themselves. In fact, most recent model Sony Bravia TVs use panels made by Sharp: http://www.smarthouse.com.au/TVs_And_Large_Display/Industry/…

Picture quality is generally excellent across the board and in line with the best in the business (YMMV, and depends on the model so it's probably best to see it in person and read reviews). Their sets also come with 3 years warranty as standard, which is a plus in my book.

  • Very cheap.
I bought one of these in October last year for twice the price :(
I did get the awesome Topfield 7160 PVR with it though.
    Great deal.

    PQ is not the greatest.
Only looks good with video games and full HD content TV broadcasts.
Otherwise picture doesn't have much detail or Sharpness- quite ironic :D

    • +1

I've found standard def content stinks on most Full HD LCDs.

  • +1

Holy Macaroni!!! that is a fantastic price!

  • Can anyone comment on this TV and sports (AFL)? much motion blur?

  • Good find ! Sharp's quality is definitely way above average !

  • the heck? we got one of these for close to $2000 last year. i can't remember how much exactly but it's so freaking cheap now!

    • Is it the same model as this? If so, how is it? From some reading it seems the processing built within the TV isn't the best ie. SD upscaling isn't very good.

      • it's not too bad. 576i content appear pretty good. 1080p or 1080i would of course be better.

  • Is there a network port or DLNA support? USB?

    • Nope.

  • I picked up my Toshiba 47" full hd LED from JB 2 weeks ago for $1000. It even came boxed with a wifi dongle for DLNA/We browsing.

  • Would rather have a 50" Samsung/Panasonic full HD plasma for the same price. Better blacks, USB playback (with the Samsung at least), and the 18% increase in screen size definitely noticable. Good to see LCDs coming down in price, though.

  • Given the price of this tv, it is important to not expect too much from this model. To quote CNET's conclusions: "…we just didn't get the pay-off in terms of performance we were expecting. Perhaps our expectations were too high, but we think that in the end Samsung is just doing it better."

  • Bought a Hisense HL42k15PL 42" LED K15 series from JB Hifi Marion SA today for $650. Ticket price was $695.. You might be able to talk the sale person down a bit more.I cant be bother.. $650 is cheap enough!!

    • Yes I was surprised how much JB sales are willing to haggle. Got $30 off from my last TV there without even asking — all I asked was confirming the price because I need to get extra warranty and not sure how much they cost.

  • I picked up one of these TV's last weekend. It's better than I expected it would be. Don't forget guys, a lot of these reviews were written when the TV was released (ie. around $2k). Now it can be had for less than half the price - it does make a difference.
