Aldi PC $599 - 4GB DDR3, 1TB HD, Athlon™ II X4 640 3GHz Your Thoughts?

870

Sorry meant to put this in a forum:

Would this be a good PC & price for a "non-techie" using Microsoft Office, Playing PC games and browsing and downloading from the web?

I bought a Medion years ago & I thought it was a good buy.

On sale from 24 March.

Thanks

          IL-2 Sturmovik

I got the demo for that.. the demo is seriously rigged.. you can't fly straight unless you specifically steer left, which means you can't easily take off.. which defeats the purpose of the whole "flight sim" idea XD

I did manage to stay in the air for a couple of minutes.. once.. then I crashed into the objective and haven't touched it since :P

Mark, I can only hope that the actual game is better. My son seems to manage to keep flying forever, and he seems to love it. :)

        • probably, maybe I got a bug or something, I honestly don't know :)

That "steering left" you experienced is probably torque steer from the engine. It's part of the game and happens in real planes too - it's actually a very good game. One which I still play frequently.

When taking off you need to use the rudder to counter torque steer - that's difficult if you are trying to use the keyboard for rudder.

IL2 is pretty old and doesn't need a modern gaming system to run well.

        • hehe, that might be it :P but honestly I found little appeal in what I saw of the demo. I might have been taught that sort of thing in the tutorial, but to play the tutorial you needed to purchase the game lol.

Our Aldi still has stock left from the last time they had these and they are reduced to $499 we grabbed one for our brother to play games, net etc and its perfect especially at that price! (our store was Mooroopna Vic)

    • Glad you are pleased. This one is said to be "brand new", so different specs I guess.

Summary of the PC World review:

It's "well-worth considering if you want a decent and inexpensive desktop PC. It only costs $599, but you get plenty of processing power, a large hard drive and even USB 3.0! It's perfect for students, families, and even first-time PC users" … and they aren't keen on the graphics card.

I think this is a good deal coz i couldnt be bothered to build this from scratch in the first place!

  • i liked this part from the review;" Basically, the latest Akoya P5315 D gives up a lot in the graphics department, but it retains a good dollop of speed in the CPU department, and it also adds a new feature to the mix — USB 3.0."
also, keep in mind the graphics card may not be the only "special" proprietary part-the motherboard may also be an OEM version which means you probably can't add more memory/other parts and if you want to replace the graphics card with a more powerful one, you have to a A)check that is actually fits inside the case B)check there are enough power connectors for the card and c)check the power supply to make sure it has enough amps

Indeed. Readers got upset with the reviewers for not opening up the PC and trying to answer their questions themselves.

  • any chance this can run cod black ops and at what settings?

I don't know where to find any thorough benchmarks with the 6450, but assuming it's slightly better than a 5450, which is in turn similar in power to Intel 3000 graphics, I think it should be able to run at a playable 30fps average at 720p and low settings. But I'll do some digging and see if I can get anything more concrete.

ed: Looks like it performs similarly to an 8600gt at lowish resolutions, so I think as per above it should be playable at 720p and low settings

Just bought one off Aldi the Pines Doncaster this morning - setup was pretty quick around 20-30mins to get it up and running. Mighty fast too.

      any left at the pines?

Not sure - there was a long queue for the $499 wide screen telly :) mostly. I was told they had quite a good stock of the PCs.

  • Sold out in H'ville, Lakemba, Bankstown…
