    Any good deals on Intel?

    • +15

      Intel
      Good deals

      Pick one mate.

    • C'mon guys, don't downvote the poor guy!

*AMD masterrace… seriously though, AMD is superior in the budget realm, vastly superior iGPUs, tend to be cheaper as well for only a minimal performance difference. Unless you need Intel for some reason, AMD'll do you fine.

Unless you need Intel for some reason,

        I like their commercials

Is there any use upgrading the ram to 16gb (+125.01) or to ryzen 7 (+$100) with Lenevo for mainly productivity use.
Will be using it for internet browsing (20+ tabs at a time), email, watching videos and the occasional game.

    • +1

I looked up the CPUs and there's honestly not that much of a difference, I wouldn't bother. If it comes with only one slot pre-occupied then I see no reason to upgrade the RAM when you can buy another stick off an ozbargain deal for cheaper than 125.
Begs the question that if you are willing to spend that much to upgrade this laptop maybe look at a more expensive laptop by itself?

    • +3

Get the 2 x 4GB ram - should be plenty and dual channel keeps the Ryzen happy.

Also, it's a bit of a pain to open up - but do-able with a soft pick. I broke one of the little tabs but the screws take care of it anyway.

I upgraded the RAM to 16GBs - total cost 809.01 delivered.

It would probably be too much for most, but I have started to encounter bottlenecks with 8GB, given how I use the computer, so 16GB should alleviate that, plus I have 2x8GB sticks for relatively cheap, should I ever need them in the future.

The CPU, I thought about it, but it really is such a negligible difference for an extra $100, plus I will use my big, bad PC for any hugely CPU intensive tasks.

      • Upgrade to 16GB RAM only costs extra $44? I thought it was much more. It was $890 when I tried it which is $125 more.

        • Sorry, trans-positional error - $890.01

          • @The Gent: 16gb ram isnt too much as the vega gpu uses its vram along with sodimm ram so if u play some slightly heavy game u will use your ram too

            • @fatbunn: Not going to be a gaming machine, but fair enough to point out.

  • Starting weight of 1.75kg….

    :(

    • I was surprised at that too, given my Dell Inspiron Gaming with a honking GPU was like 2.5KGs…

  • No backlit keyboard 😮

You get what you pay for sometimes

      • Not necessarily. It tends to be an option with ThinkPad's, I believe the Intel version actually has the option.

Not sure why the AMD model doesn't allow the option for backlit + fingerprint scanner.

  • Geez something like this but with a decent GPU could get me over the line. My 6 year old Samsung is still going strong with an i7 3630 and gt650 and cost $1k. It was a bargain at the time, especially given its life span. A same priced upgrade is looking closer now!

    • Yeah the Vega graphics is so much better than Intel graphics but it's not outstanding.

      • +1

The dream is something VR capable but for sensible money you have to buy from the U.S… So much cheaper via new egg etc.

    • Did you miss out on the previous few Dell Inspiron gaming laptop deals? I think they hovered around the $1,200 mark for an i5, 8GB RAM, 4GB GPU etc

      • +1

The recent deals have been closer to the 1k mark I think. If you can muster the money/patience and you use it enough to warrant an extra 200 bucks, worthwhile.

Personally I'm not intending on using my laptop for much gaming, just the "on the road" gaming, so vega does me well for a boatload less than most other AU laptops.

  • Is the "AMD Radeon Vega 8 Graphics" enough to play Fortnite on High settings and good FPS, my son wants a better computer to play.

    • It will maybe play on low at 1080p… But maybe not even that.

      • Think it did relatively well on 1080p low settings actually (as per hardware unboxed video on the HP r5 2500u benchmarks).

But you'd probably be aiming for the medium 720p on a laptop in thos range.

*Note, I'm running off memory. If you want to fact check watch hardware unboxed video benchmarking the ryzen 5 2500u.

Word of warning, I returned mine… switched back to dell..

    Battery life was abysmal..

Ohh and don't try and install linux on these, Lenovo have done a good job of ensuring that isn't possible. This site has workarounds but even then it won't be stable long term, the guy who solved it has sold his now too - https://evilazrael.de/comment/914

    • My usage is mainly at home, so I don't mind shorter battery life unless it's just 2 hrs after a full charge. :(

      • I got just shy of 3 hours but I had the e585 which had the same internal specs (including battery) just a larger screen, so maybe the 15.6" screen contributed compared to the 14" model? Reports I saw for the 14" on Windows were just shy of 4 hours. My 14" Dell is giving me near 7 hours, though it is just a Core i5-8265U so weaker gpu would help I guess?

        • +1

          @joele

Were there anything that you don't like about E585 apart from the battery life?

Still tempted to get this as the price is very good.

And which Dell model did you ended getting at the end?

          • +1

@vash12: Apart from the battery life and the difficulty/instability running Linux the Lenovo was a decent enough laptop. Good performance, nice looking matte screen though with a very low (59%) of the sRGB colour space visible, nice keyboard (for a laptop).

The only thing I love/hate about the dell is it's highly reflective screen, which looks great in the right conditions but can be annoying depending on lighting.

This is the dell I bought (bit more expensive) - https://www.jbhifi.com.au/computers-tablets/laptops/dell/del…

I have no expectations of battery. My old i7 gets 90 and about 150 minutes out of the aftermarket batteries when the old gt650 is partly in use… My old succession of Asus netbooks were s very different story though!

    • How was the return policy with lenovo. Just got off Lenovo customer chat and they said it will be a 20% restocking fee within 7 days. DId you go through the same process or did you state it was unusable and got a full refund?

      • +1

Nope I had to cop the 20% loss, as they didn't guarantee any other OS (other than windows) and apparently battery life claims are just an estimate etc etc.. In the end I decided that for my usage it was unsuitable so better/easier to return it that way than trying to sell it.. Lesson learnt, no more lenovo for me..

        • Ouch. Woulda thought they'd be a fair bit better with their business brand…

Just curious, what were you running to get that battery life?

    • I've been getting to around the 8 hour mark on my 485 (running chrome and libre writer, so relatively light usage). Seems potentially like a defect?

As for Linux, that could definitely be a problem for some. +1 for pointing that out.

  • just got shipping notification. took 4 business days.

  • I started using mine.. pretty happy with the performance. Haven't tried battery life much yet as my usage is generally within home.
