Our Story

When my best mate and I started SimsDIrect in our apartment in February this year, we had no idea what we were getting into… The amount of positive feedback we got from Aussie travelers was incredible. When our customers started to tell us about how our products helped them save money (and headaches!) while traveling, we knew we had to try our best to build something out of it.

For too long the big guys like Telstra, Vodafone and Optus have stitched up Aussie travelers with overpriced data roaming and ridiculous hidden fees. So we decided to take on the data roaming industry by helping Aussies travel connected with convenient and affordable prepaid travel SIMs.

Since then, we have moved into an office, brought on our first employee and learned a lot about the dos and donts of growing a business. It has been extremely fulfilling to build SimsDirect from scratch and hear all the positive feedback from thousands of Aussies travelers.

I can quite confidently say that we would not have made it this far without the support from OzBargain and our customers. So thank you to everyone who has supported us so far <3

Reach out to us anytime if you need a hand finding a SIM for your next trip overseas, we would love to help out!

Thanks for reading :)

          Thanks Aidan

At this discounted price I purchased 4 x 10gb cards

Awesome service and what an awesome deal you can't go wrong

          Thanks again

@kiwibro: Thanks for the support and business Kiwi! :)

            -Aidan

      • I'd be interested in this as well, however only need 1 for an upcoming Xmas trip to NZ..

        • Hey Tfangel!

Shoot me a PM, I can't message you!

          -Aidan

          • @SimsDirect: Hey Aidan, would love to hear more about your 2.5gb sim. I'm headed to NZ for 2 weeks in december.

    • Deals for SIM card for India?

    • It seems that I am 30 mins late for this deal. Is it still possible to grab one at this price? Cheers.

      • Hey Mel!

        Shoot me a PM!

        -Aidan

Just for comparison. Here is the link to the Vodafone NZ travel sim. https://www.vodafone.co.nz/travel-sim/ The price is inclusive of GST.

When I went to NZ about 2 months ago, after I landed at the Auckland International Airport, near the duty free shop, there was a Vodafone counter which sale the travel sim for NZ$43 (tax free). Took me about 10 minutes and got the sim and working on my mobile.

Obviously, I am not comparing apple with apple here (sim card on hand vs getting it at the aiport, 10G vs 4G, vodafone vs 2degree mobile), but just want to let other knows alternative.

    • Hey dpoon73!

      Thanks for the info!

      -Aidan

    • Hey dpoon73,
Do you know if they had SIM cards only? Like a $2 starter pack?
I'm heading away with my wife and in-laws in a few months and already planned on getting one of these (thanks for the discount OP!). Wouldn't mind getting the in-laws a SIM that can receive calls only for when we split up.
      Appreciate your advice!

Alternatively pay about $6 extra and get Skinny SIM at the airport and sign up to one of these plans:

    https://www.skinny.co.nz/pricing/plans/#combo_28days

    $46
    12 GB data
Unlimited calls to NZ and AU
    28 day plan

      Hey Batrarobin,

Thanks for the info man, that's a great find.

I haven't had an experience with Spark but this could be worth looking into as a future product for us.

      Cheers,

      -Aidan

    • +1

If that's $46 NZ its actually approximately $43 AUD, so only an extra $3

      • -1

$2 for a SIM though. Spark appears to have a better rural network, https://gis.geek.nz/celltowers/ appears to be the NZ OzTowers equivalent and makes it look like a fair difference between 2Degrees and Voda or Spark. Of course, probably doesn't matter for everyone, but always a good idea to ensure you'll have service where you plan to be to avoid surprises. It does appear that 2degrees roams onto Voda 3G where they have no coverage as well.

  • When does the Sim need to be activated by?

    • +1

      Hey ozb18,

It doesn't have an expiry date, so you can hold onto it for as long as you need. The 30 days will start as soon as you activate it in NZ.

      Hope this helps,

      -Aidan

  • -1

Telstra $5 a day roaming is what I use.

    • Hey Bashter!

Yeah that's totally fair, this deal is great for people travelling for more than a week! :)

      -Aidan

  • Noooo! Just bought the 2.5gb/$29 Sim off you guys last night! Ah well, good deal!

    • Sent you a PM happy! :)

      -Aidan

      • -1

Hey Aidan, I'm in the same situation, the 2.5GB sim is in the post as we speak. Any help to upgrade will be appreciated.

        • Pm'd Skimp!

          -Aidan

  • +1

Thanks OP. Got one. Good price with the discount. Otherwise I was gonna pay $36 NZD for only 4.5 GB on Skinny Mobile upon landing for my upcoming trip.

    • Hey Fault!

      Glad we could help out!

Thanks for the support and business :)

      -Aidan

  • Thanks OP! My wife had already spotted this SIM and we were probably going to buy it later, but with the discount we'll get it now given no expiry! Thanks.

    • Hey mrbargainhunter,

No problem my man! Thanks for the business and support!

Reach out if you need anything :)

      -Aidan

  • Hi, Aidan, Any deal for Japan soon? I'm leaving soon :)
Also, how does the day count as? like if you activate the sim at 11pm, your first day is only 1hr?

    • Hey lufee,

We will be doing a Japan deal next week most likely. Keep an eye out for it :)

That's honestly a great question, I can't 100% confirm that, unfortunately. But from past experience, I'd say it works on a 24 hour basis. Some of our other SIM cards work so if you activate on 11PM it would work until the 30th day @ 11PM again.

      Cheers,
      -Aidan

      • Also keen for a Japan SIM deal; looking forward to the deal next week when it drops!

  • Hi,

How long is this deal running till?

Also, how long do i have to activate this sim before expiry?

    Thanks

    • Hey gsxr600rr,

It's running until Friday this week, or until 200 codes expire. We have about 50 left.

There is no expiry date on this SIM, you can hold it as long as you need. The 30 days will start as soon as you activate the SIM in NZ, whether that's 2 weeks or 3 years from now, it makes no difference.

      Cheers,
      -Aidan

  • Would love to see a generic site wide discount or USA/Canada sim :)

    • +1

We generally keep deals to a specific product to manage our stock levels but we might try a site wide deal in the future.

To be completely honest, our USA/Canada SIM isn't the greatest value. There is a really good T-mobile option out there. Our SIM is a data-only one.

We might give it a crack on Ozbargain and see how it goes, but nothing planned yet.

      Cheers,
      -Aidan

      • I need a US sim as well!

  • when will USA+EUROPE 2019 sim on special?

    • Hey hishaken,

I'm not exactly sure what you are asking, but I'll try my best to answer.

We will be doing exclusive deals for our USA and europe products periodically on Ozbargain, I can't give you specific dates as we haven't planned anything. The only thing we have planned is to be more consistent and regular on ozbargain.

      I hope this helps!

      -Aidan

thanks :) im heading to nz at end of nov to early december!

Thanks Aidan, ordered 1 for upcoming NZ Trip in January with the family. Hope the reception is good in Queenstown.

    • Hey MickBubba,

No worries man! Cheers for the purchase :)

Reach out if you need anything from the team and I.

We've received alot of positive feedback about this SIM and the reception. But please do let me know how you go!

      -Aidan

  • Would get this but heading to NZ this sunday so don’t think I would get it in time with the free shipping option :(

    • Hey icedtea229,

Yeah free shipping wouldn't make it in time. If you ordered express shipping today it would be with you before COB tomorrow. But that would be an additional 7.99, so its up to you.

Let me know if you decide to go with express and I can make sure I send it out asap today.

      Cheers,
      -Aidan

  • I bought one a few days ago and it's on its way, any chance to have that plan upgraded to this one?

    • Hey skimp,

Did you buy the 2.5GB SIM? There is no way for me to upgrade that SIM to the 10GB for you, unfortunately. The SIMs come with the bundle preloaded on them so there isn't anything I can do.

The best we can do is organise a return/refund for the original order and you can purchase this new SIM.

Just PM me or hit us up on live chat if you want to organise that :)

      Cheers,
      -Aidan

  • Thanks Aidan. Just ordered 1 sim for my upcoming trip to Queenstown. Hopefully, I get it by 19th as I am flying on 20th

    • +1

      Hey lokesh7,

No worries! Glad I could help :)

We will be shipping all orders this afternoon around 3PM so I'm fairly confident I'll get it to you in time.

      Cheers,
      -Aidan

  • Any deal for the 2.5GB NZ sim pack? TIA!

    • Hey Gorzy,

Unfortunately not this time. We might do another NZ post in a few weeks time, however, nothing planned yet.

You can make use of our 'first-time customer' discount if you need to buy it soon. Just check out with WELCOME10 for 10% off your order.

Otherwise, you will need to keep an eye on us in a few weeks time.

      Cheers,
      -Aidan

As usual, here's a list of users who've had problems with Sims Direct (mainly deliveries not arriving on time or being cancelled AFTER they should have been delivered):
    D B
    kiwipride
    swineey
    altomic
    kiwipride again
    Dave77
    ozpanda
    min c
    strayan - poor service
    maxwellian

    scanuck

If there's any more I should add to the list please let me know.

      Hey BradleyDS2,

Thanks for sharing. I understand your concerns with us based on the mistakes we made 6 months ago.

I addressed this in our previous deal last week here

I have made the necessary changes to our business to ensure we come through on deliveries and make sure all customers are looked after!

I can genuinely say that you helped me realise our errors last time and it was definitely needed before coming back to Ozbargain.

From now onwards, to make sure we don't make the same mistakes as last time. I will be capping the number of coupons we give to ozbargain to make sure we don't sell more than we can handle. Last week for our USA deal we took 200 discounted orders, expired the deal and fulfilled ALL orders before 3PM the following day. It's what I am currently doing as I sit here and reply to you at the office (and fulfill all our NZ orders from this deal). This is the standard we will be sticking to from now on to make sure that we don't cause the same problems as last time.

Additionally, in the unlikely event your order gets lost in the mail or we can't deliver on time. All customers are entitled to our 100% money back guarantee. I don't want to take your money unless you get your order and get value out of the product.

I appreciate you commenting on our threads to warn others, and you are free to do so. However I can assure you we will not be causing any problems like last time.

      Thanks Bradley,
      -Aidan

  • Hey aidan! I was wondering if it was possible to get two sim cards from the US deal you posted before?

    • +1

      Hey Shroo,

We have plenty of stock in the USA SIM cards, but unfortunately, I can't give you the 25% off discount. We are trying to be a bit more exclusive with the deals and stick to it.

However, I can off you our 'first-time customer' discount. It's not exclusive to any product you can use it on any purchase you like. Just use the discount code WELCOME10 at checkout for 10% off your order.

      I hope you can understand!

Reach out if you have any questions, I'll be happy to help.

I used sims direct in Europe. My wife had a sim from eurosims, I chose one from simsdirect.

Whilst I had 4G in London, all of Croatia, Italy and France were 3G. My wife had 4G coverage.

Additionally my sim would randomly go to “no service” and I would have to go on and off airplane mode to get it to work. This would have 4-5 times a day. Speeds were often excruciatingly slow (10 seconds to load a simple web page). Reception was also poorer than Eurosims. Not affiliated with either provider but bought a sim each to hedge bets. Simsdirect used three mobile, eurosims used O2.

I would not recommend for any future travels for the Europe sim. On the flip side, the team were responsive on email but the suggestions didn’t really help. It was fine for google maps, half the time it worked ok at at 3g speeds but a lot of the time was 2G like.

    • +2

      Hey moflare,

Thanks for your feedback on our Europe SIM. I apologise for the poor experience with the SIM. Sometimes there can be issues with the products and the networks (ThreeUK network) that we can't control. Thats why its important for us to get feedback like this to find out the experiences people are having and learn about the ups and downs with these products.

There is always the possibility of mobile settings being incorrect or SIM cards being faulty that can also cause issues.

Please email me asap to:[email protected] with your order number and I am willing to make it right with you. I don't want you to feel empty-handed if you didn't get any value out of the SIM.

      Cheers,
      -Aidan

      Hope that helps!
