So not worth it for such an old model… still holding hope for an ipad mini 5

    • Fingers and toes crossed.

But look at what they did with the SE…..

I understand that some people want that smaller form factor, but Apple have made the base iPad the same dimensions as what the Air models were, at the price the Mini was at. It's basically the best value for money full tablet out there.

Combine that with larger phones nearing 7", and it's pretty hard to justify an 8" tablet these days.

People in that segment who want a small tablet for reading ebooks should probably opt for the Kindle Paperwhite range, which has better pricing, as well as better screen tech for that purpose. Apple cannot compete with them there, nor can they compete with them in the small tablet arena, where the Fire HD is king, at least in the US.

      • Some Apps, like The Age app only work on the PAD format not the phone format.

        • On iOS, you can view the paper in Apple News, load up the mobile site in Safari, and then you can also download it from them if you log in.

Their app being iPad only is just lazy app development from Fairfax.

I think they've recently rectified this on Android, so look for an iPhone app in the near future.

          • @jasswolf: I do the cryptic crossword on my device, dont think they will rectify that soon.

            • @try2bhelpful: You're probably right there, but I'd suggest contacting them about adding it to that future app, as they should be able to wrangle a fairly easy to implement third-party solution for any Android and iPhobe-friendly app they have developed.

              • @jasswolf: Would be tricky with the smaller screens; the ipad mini is about the smallest it would work on. Especially given the target demographic :)

      • A 6 inch screen at 18:9 AR is nowhere near as much screen real estate as these 4:3 devices. My note 9 for instance only has around half the screen real estate of my old 8 inch Android tablet. Despite being only 1.6 inches smaller.

        • Again, that's fair, there just doesn't seem to be much of a market for it. 8 inch tablets generally have enough PPI with cheaper screens, and it would seem no one is making high-density LCDs in that size and ratio right now.

Most people bought a Mini because it was cheap, and now the 9.7" version is cheaper than this, with a vastly more powerful chip and a bigger battery. Eventually we might see the Pro's screen baked into the standard iPad, or maybe an AMOLED or MicroLED effort depending on how each of those technologies evolve.

The Mi Pad 4 is an 8 inch tablet that is basically a step up from the iPad Mini 4 for as little as half the price, if you're not too fussed about iOS. The Snapdragon 660 is basically an A8 with extra cores and better battery life.

Away from that, over the next few years look for foldable phones that will essentially replace this small tablet space entirely.

          • @jasswolf: The main reason to get an Apple device is for the IOS Ecosystem. I do agree that the foldable phones might be a way to get the smaller sized ipad footprint but we are still waiting to see how that will pan out. A lot of people I know with the smaller ones think it is the right size, we just need to lose the button and increase the screen real estate. However, I think you are right I think Apple will stop making them soon.

            • @try2bhelpful: Yeah,iPad has a better ecosystem with apps designed to take advantage of the bigger screen. Android is basically a dead platform in the tablet world, with most of the app ecosystem blown up phone apps. The lack of support for Android tablets might be a driving factor for others to choose iOS at this stage.

I can’t believe this is still selling for over $400… This is so outdated in 2018!

    • They are still a great little unit, I use mine everyday. However, I would like an updated version - the size works well for me.

  • +5

I thought they discontinued the 4, I really wish they would bring out a ipad mini pro.

    • +5

Agreed. I just love this form factor.

Luckily mi pad 4 is out and decently priced

  • +3

yeah we got one and it's fine for light use. we only watch youtube on it - but i didn't realise how old the insides are. It's only rocking an A8 CPU which is what the iPhone 6 had.

  • +5

Not worth it for an A8 chip Apple device - too outdated.

  • So old, you'd think Apple would have updated the mini.

iPad's are never heavily discounted, why are you all up in arms?

    • Because it's such a old model. It should be quite a lot less in price due to its age.

      • +1

        Really worth a downvote?

    • Issue isn’t the discount but the base price, especially when you compare it to the larger 2018 iPad which is a far more competitive unit. Only would grab this if you absolutely couldn’t live with the larger model, which itself isn’t massive. For most cases it’ll be the better device.

2018 iPad will likely get updates for a number of years to come too, this ones likely about to drop off I’d imagine.

  • Wooooooo, going to Singapore this week! Guess it’s TRS time! :D

    • and bring it back?

Bringing goods back into Australia for which you have already claimed a TRS refund

If you are aged 18 years or over, you can bring up to AUD 900 worth of goods into Australia duty-free, or AUD 450 if you are younger than 18. Families travelling together can pool this allowance (a couple with one child can bring in a total of AUD 900 + AUD 900 + AUD 450 = AUD 2250 worth of goods into Australia without paying duty or GST). This is called your passenger concession.

If the total value of the goods you are bringing into Australia that you purchased overseas or for which you have claimed a refund under TRS is greater than your passenger concession:

you must declare all of their goods
you will need to repay the GST refund back on the goods you claimed under the TRS
duty and GST will apply to all items purchased, not just goods over the limit of your passenger concession.
Penalties can apply if you don't declare that you have goods in excess of your passenger concession.

        • I used to not claim TRS on anything, as I would always bring it back, however people said I was being dumb. I have claimed a couple of times now and never had an issue.
I am sure it would be different if the TRS was above $500 or something that woulld raise a red flag, but they seem to accept that this is what the population do. They buy something expensive, claim TRS and then bring it back

          • @Ijuiceman: My reading of the extract above is they dont have an issue provided everything coming in is under $900 per adult person. If it is over $900 per adult person you pay GST on the total amount so they reverse what they've given you.

            • @try2bhelpful: That's how I thought it was.

All I would do is say the one I took out of the country was left there for family and the one I have on me is my personal/work one.

Be going soon, so I'll ask when I get there…

            • @try2bhelpful: my husband bought an iPhone X last year around $1500. He was travelling alone to London. Claimed TRS. Declared it when he came back and they said its fine and let him through no charge

  • this thing is very slow

My iPad air 2 is showing the negative signs of newer iOS. The thing is still reasonably snappy enough, but when browsing the net Web pages are always reloading now. It's a pity, because this device used to perform fantastic at basic stuff like Web browsing. Now it's like using an old Android device with only 2gb of ram. I'm guessing iOS 13 will kill it for good. So I couldn't really recommend buying a device like this in 2018. In my case I've had my iPad Air 2 since release and didn't pay too much more than this at the time. So I'm not complaining from that perspective. I think buying 3+ year old tech at this price is a bit crazy, perhaps under $200 would be a reasonable price.
