Got any of the 10" ones

      • +3

Yep. Currently $319.99 US but I'll see if it can be discounted further.

        • +1

Hi Rep, any deal on the 8" LTE version?

      • +1

I'm in the same boat, I want the plus model for bigger screen. Have a 6 inch phone so want a tablet that's actually much bigger. Plus I do a ton of public speaking and prefer to use a bigger screen for notes.

      • Best I can get is 316.99 as it's already on sale due to 11.11

  • +1

    Does it play Netflix hd?

    Or just 480p.

  • +1

    Not the LTE model?

  • That's only the 3GB + 32GB version though sadly…

Maybe some more specs in the post, OP?

  • +12

Global rom doesn't exist yet. This will have a vendor rom installed.

If you don't believe me scroll down in the description, it says" *Note:Global ROM support Multi-language,google play, not support OTA."

I.E no updates - clear evidence of vendor rom

    • hi Byron pardon my lack of knowledge.laying my good old ipad2 to rest &looking for something really cheap because use case is purely browsing 15 -30 min a day and occassionally netflix/ some apps. but one thing i do expect is that it keeps getting updates- both for os and apps including browser for security and features(one very nagging issue with my dead ipad as chrome stopped updating). so do you mean that 'not support ota' means updates are not happening going forward once i buy it.

      • OS updates are a no go unless you're fine with tinkering via XDA Developers. App updates will work until 8.1 is not supported, which would be at least 5 years from now, if not 8.

        • Is this on the assumption this is the chinese rom with google play side loaded or a vendor written and installed rom?

      • +2

Vendor Rom installed by the seller means it is a modified official rom, google play store will likely operate independently within that environment so you can likely update your apps. However you get no OTA updates as it is neither an official/approved Xiaomi MIUI rom or Android official/approved rom so you will get updates from neither as essentially it is something completely different.

Add to this the fact an unofficial vendor rom will eventually have compatibility & performance issues to which you will have no redress, as well as a high probability of malicious spyware and malware installed. I would just keep away.

You are better off buying the device with the official chinese rom and side loading google play yourself.

*also regarding Netflix this device hardware is DRM level 3 so you will only be ably to watch in 480p ( they don't have Netflix in china)

      • -1

Just get an ipad 3, they are cheap and still get updates?

  • +2

How does this thing perform if compared with iPad Pro 12.9 to play Fruit Ninja and Candy Crush mostly?

    • The same. Those two games are hardly demanding.

        THAT'S THE JOKE

  • lock your tablet with you face.

    How to lock using face?

    • Stare at it multiple times and it will lock based on unsuccessful attempts. duh

    • +3

Smash your face on the power button.

      • +1

Or if you're really ugly, look at the screen and the glass will crack

  • +2

I think Google translate needs a new language .. "Xiaomi" to English would be good as I've read the Battery section now about 4 times and still don't understand it

    • +1

right after you enjoy a cup of coffee

    • lolol. i think it means for the time you drink cup of tea, it will charge up all you need for the day

    • Username checks out

  • Would be Lenovo P8 be a better alternative to this?

    • +1

      P8 SD625 vs SD660.
      P8 16GB ROM vs 32GB
      P8 LTE vs WiFi

      Everything else is similar.

    • +5

P8 has Lineage as a custom ROM option, this one has MoKee which I've never used or seen but apparently runs well.

The P8's LTE is pretty limited, basically only works in cities (and signal seems unusably weak on bands 1 and 3, only really had success with band 40) and 3G seems nearly unusable on mine no matter the telco so not really a selling point IMO.
You'd end up flashing both I think as this won't come with a proper OTA upgradable ROM and the P8 is stuck on something ancient without flashing Lineage.

As a P8 owner I'd probably buy this I think, hardware seems to be a clear upgrade (USB C, metal build, bigger battery, faster CPU, more storage, etc…) and it does have an AOSP based ROM available in MoKee, all at a similar price. I like the P8 and am happy with my purchase but it's just older and inferior in hardware now.

      • Yeah the P8 lte function doesnt work,

  • Check this out: https://www.gearbest.com/tablet-pcs/pp_009799152192.html?wid…
Sort of similar- slower processor and poor camera (who uses tablet cameras!) but otherwise similar. Teclast are making good things IMO- I'm using one of their laptops and it's great. Obviously they are no Xiaomi, but I love all of these upstart Chinese tech companies. They're competing so hard and it only means cheaper and cheaper things for us!!

    • Teclast, chuwi etc. Are to go for if it's going to be for the kids. You'll never ever get an update on that and it's rare that custom rooms are made for them.

I've got a Hi8 but the android partition is useless, most apps won't run, even chrome.

      • +1

I got a ifive Mini 4s 8 inch, for around $200 and it's pretty suck, randomly restarts, random crashes, switching apps is jittery, all this on Android 6 with 3gb of ram.

Maybe the Xiaomi is just a better experience overall?

        • Xiaomi is definitely the best and most popular with regards to Chinese tablets. It's got alot of support from xda forums

        • +1

lol, I have ifive mini 4s too, apart from the screen resolution it is an unstable piece of rubbish

          • @Baron-K: Haven you managed to make it better from out of the box? There's nothing I can seem to do to make it better.

If I used it for more then just reading comics I'd be throwing it against the wall. My ipad mini gen 2 is better then the ifive.

            • @Nalar: My wifi didn't work properly out of the box, fixed it somewhat with an updated rom from http://bbs.5-fnf.com/forum.php?mod=forumdisplay&fid=2, however did not stop it from crashing and the horrendous battery drain. If you investigate that path beware if you install a rom that is not for your EXACT serial number you will brick your device. They used many different hardware components and software configurations for each batch. Also its debatable that even if you find an 'updated' rom there that the flashing method is worth it, took me several attempts and is a bricking risk also.

    • Pipo W3F owner here. wouldn't go the cheap-as-chips route again. Facebook never worked. Chrome broke recently, and worked for days only after a factory reset. Wifi iffy. No recourse.

OK as a media player, and a browser (ish).

A name brand device, sold in large enough quantities to get some custom ROM love, would be my minimum requirement next time round.

      • No facebook is a bonus. My htc comes with facebook and the facebook app keeps reinstalling itself. Extremely annoying

old mate said "geez, mate, fair crack of the whip. Bruce said to use code a98f30".
I said "what'll that set me back?"
old codger here cranked his head back whilst numbers went flying around his noggin - "bout 400 bucks"

  • Will buy this instead of a Google home hub

  • omg for a second I thought its Ipad for $159 lol

  • I have the 4GB ram edition (no lte), excellent tablet with the only downside being the lack of widevine L1 DRM for HD Netflix.

    • Why can't you play 1080p Netflix? hardware seems like it should be able to?

      • @baron-k explained it earlier.

*also regarding Netflix this device hardware is DRM level 3 so you will only be ably to watch in 480p ( they don't have Netflix in china)"

  • Good deal, wish it was the 4/64GB one.

    4/64 for 300 here

    • Why does GearBest 4/64 support OTA? Incorrect information?

      • Possible, they could have just copied the Global version slides. However maybe the non Global version supports OTA as well, just not the one we want. I'm planning on flashing the Mookee OS thing anyway. There will probably be a global rom but don't know if it will add OTA when you flash it yourself.

  • "32GB is enogh for you, maggot"

that's what it sounds like to me

  • +1

Do Mi Pad's come in 10 inch variants?

    • +1

Mi Pad 4 Plus is the 10 inch version of this. Recently released.

  • Does this or any similar have wireless charging?

    • +1

Haven't seen one during my recent hunt for a new android tablet. To be fair at 6,000mah it would take a crazy long time to charge the battery over wireless.

This takes around 2.5-3 hours to charge over wired (no QC capability) if it could do wireless you'd need to double that.

  • +1

I don't need one of these but I think I'm going to buy one.

  • +1

Anyone know of they are going to release a global version of this or the plus with proper DRM?

Love the look of them but I use my tablet mainly for Netflix and Amazon video so really need proper support :(

    • This is the global edition, it's unlikely to get the DRM update to support HD Netflix. Xiaomi has had this limitation since the first mipad.

I'm not sure if it supports Amazon video as I don't have a subscription for it.

      • There is no global edition, this has a vendor rom

  • Just saying, the code is an affiliate code. The normal code would be 05GEEKBUY.

    • Thanks for the information.

      Removed affiliate from code.

      • And now the price is $158.99 US :)

Edit: My bad. You need to go click through the eDM URL to get that tiny little extra discount.

  • The lack of GPS may be of concern for Pokémon Go players. Otherwise the tablet seems to get good reviews.

    • +1

lol pokemon go on a tab is just terribl

  • 1920*1200 Resolution <— this may annoy some people (16:9)…..

    • Do you mean it's 16:9 or that it will annoy 16:9 People. Because it's actually 16:10.

      • +1

yep you're correct ~ I meant the 16:10 aspect ration will annoy some people

        • My Googling failed me.

The weird aspect ratio = the first thing I noticed when I opened my 4GB model.

        Aspect ratio Example resolutions
        16:10 1280x800, 1920x1200
        16:9 1366x768†, 1920x1080

        • +2

Yeah, I'm plenty obsessed with aspect ratios. 16:9 to me is near useless on a tablet unless you do nothing but watch videos. 16:10 is decent as you get some more natural reading width and don't have to deal with large black bars in videos. I have a 10 inch 16:10 tablet for my media, a 8 inch 4:3 for reading and a 8 inch 16:10 for just home use and a backup smart device.

To calculate the aspect ratio from any resolution all you have to do is divide the res numbers:

          1920/1200 = 1.6, if you notice 16:10 is also 1.6 as 16/10 is 1.6.
          1920/1080 = 1.77.. this is 16:9 as 16/9 is also 1.77
2048/1536 = 1.33 this is 4:3 as 4/3 is also 1.333 (This is great for reading)

The closer the number is to 2 the more "widescreen" the screen is, the closer the number to 1, the more "box" the screen is. Makes sense as this number is literally a ratio of length and width. 2 length vs 1 width will be widescreen, 1 length to 1 width will be a box.

Hope that helps in the future!

  • +2

Hi, I've been looking at this tablet for the last few days. I would like to get a deal on the LTE 4gb ram global rom variant if possible, aliexpress have one for $318 AU at the moment.

    • Also looking at the LTE version, please rep?

      • Currently there is no global version of the lte edition.

  • So Global Rom with no OTA means that I need to manually update the firmware every time it comes out?
How easy is it to upgrade Mi devices?

    • +1

It's a vendor ROM that comes on the device, not sure how you'd upgrade that tbh. However, it does have Xiaomi.eu ROM support, which is basically tweaked MIUI with China bloat removed and that ROM does have OTA support.
Since these apparently come with an unlocked bootloader, it shouldn't be too difficult, much like flashing custom ROMs on other devices.

  • Mine broke yesterday, so this is quite handy. Thanks!

  • How long does Geek Buying usually take to ship this sort of thing?

    • 2-7 days.

      • How long to arrive though?

        • If you choose the free Australia Direct Line shipping option it will take 5-8 business days after dispatch.

          • @Clear: I chose whatever was cheapest, would that be Australia Direct?

            • @treeman: For this tablet you have the choice of choosing the slow 30 business day airmail or the faster Australia Direct Line. You can choose either at checkout.

              • @Clear: I chose airmail.

Was it the same cost for postage?

                Damn, that sucks!

                • +1

@treeman: What's your order number? Let me see if I can have that changed over for you.

                  • @Clear: 4741423

                    Thanks!

                    • @treeman: Also do you know if this tablet is gorilla glass?

                      • +1

@treeman: They'll be sending you an email soon to let you know about the change of shipping method.

I've had a look at Xiaomi's specs and can't see any mention of Gorilla Glass unfortunately.

                        • +1

                          @Clear: Thanks Heaps!

                          Got the email.

Pity about not being gorilla glass, might have to invest in a case.

                  • @Clear: Hey mate I ordered express and I don't think it's been shipped yet 4739872??

                    • @darcy07: Don't worry mine hasn't been sent either just got the email it's changed the shipping method.

                    • @darcy07: Processing and shipping time are separate.

                      • @Clear: why did I pay express then its meant to be a birthday present

                        • +1

@darcy07: Every store separate processing and shipping times. It's how online ordering works.

It's not ideal to order from China if you need something short notice but I can try and nudge it.

  • FYI, Mi Pad 4 today updated to MIUI 10 for those on the stock rom. (10.1.1.0 ODJCNFI) https://en.miui.com/thread-4468431-1-1.html

  • Has anyone's order been shipped yet? My order's status has been 'Payment Confirmed (Processing)" for five days now.

    • Mine's been the same. Guess it's still within their allocated time frame to ship the item.
