Why is it always the right? Have one of those already, but never been able to score a left one (cheaply)!

I guess more left joysticks need replacing?

    • Im guessing because the left has the joystick in a better position.

        Ah yeah, that's plausible!

Right is more complex in terms of the hardware (read: more susceptible to damage). I'm assuming they are produced in much higher volume.

Right is also the one people mod (and/or destroy attempting to mod) for triggering RCM mode without a dedicated jig.

Right is more complex in terms of the hardware (read: more susceptible to damage). I'm assuming they are produced in much higher volume.

I'm not entirely convinced that they would have produced significantly more right ones just because they are more complex. I would think that the vast majority of faults (and therefore replacements) would be from physical damage, eg. to the sticks. So I'm not sure your would produce more right ones, just because they hold more tech (that could go wrong).

Right is also the one people mod (and/or destroy attempting to mod) for triggering RCM mode without a dedicated jig.

This would increase the demand for right, yes. But these joycons are old, pre-hacking, and Nintendo would not have produced more right joycons to cater for people hacking the Switch! If anything, the higher demand for right joycons for hacking would mean there should be LESS right joycons available.

So I'm not convinced that either of these things is the reason. I think it is much more likely due to higher demand for left (whether that's because of higher failure, or because people just like the left joycon better because of stick placement).

"So I'm not convinced that either of these things is the reason."

So why did you bother asking the question?

          • @[Deactivated]: Because I'm interested in the answer to the question (and other people's thoughts on what it could be). And I have been provided with some answers - some I agree with, and some that I don't. And that's totally fine!

You provided your opinion, which I am totally happy to hear! I just don't happen to agree with your opinion, that's all. I'm not having a go at you, or telling you your opinion has no value - I just don't agree that those are the reasons. So take it easy dude! :)

I'd say the right is more common to be faulty because it has the NFC and IR camera.
Hence they'd move more of the right joy con stock then the left. Although there is a problem with the left joy con and the lock breaking. Making the left joy con slide out when holding it.

    • its got more hardware in it …. so it costs more?

  • I believe the individual joy-con are now discontinued, therefore stock are very limited.

  • Can you just buy two of these for four player games?

    • Additional Joy-Con or Nintendo Switch Pro controllers required for multiplayer modes; sold separately. Multiplayer features vary by game; see individual games for details.

      What does that mean?

    • Its also still cheaper to buy them seperately 36 + 70 = 106 vs 120 for the pair.

      • I believe target has them for $99 a pair as an everyday price.

    • Yes (including the two that came with your switch)for all the four player games I've tried, if you can use single joycon for then it'll be fine. eg nba playgrounds, mario party(this is the only option), overcooked.

  • I'm getting "not available for delivery" and only 6 stores seem to have it. It went fast I suppose?

  • so jb should be able to price match it, and i can use my gift card. not too bad.

    • Most JB Hi-Fi don't have stock either.

  • Myself and another ozb member have replaced the left joycon due to the faulty analog stick.

@caprimulgus i agree with the more frequent left joycon replacement theory. I don't find the analog stick to be robust enough and it sticks out like a sore thumb compare to the vita or 3ds analog stick.

Just out of curiosity, has anyone else had to replace the left joycon due to a broken analog stick?

  • Good luck finding any in stock.

My right one shit itself a few months back and I drove out to Greensborough to get the only one of these in stock for about 300k (also at 36 tag). Supposedly they only made these individually at launch, so it's 1.5 year old stock, not something you're likely to stumble into by chance, really.
