I don't think personally the price is attractive given that they are box damaged refurbished items, as the ongoing flash sales on eBay and instore are getting better by the day for brand new sets. JB Hi-Fi and Harvey is selling $399 at the moment and eBay and AMazon are getting good sales along the way. I'm sure the price is going to remain competitive and even lower going into the Xmas period.

    • +3

A very good point. I wouldn't really mind about the damaged box, but it's the refurbishment part that makes the price less attractive.

      • +4

You'd think the base price would be a little bit cheaper then $449 given its a "refurb" (regardless of condition). JB have them new $399 instore.

        • That's Sony for you. Check their camera prices on their site and eBay store. They're always way overpriced compared to all retailers.

      Better deal here :

You can have them for $347.89 if you are a corporate client I.e CBA ANZ and other professional bodies.

Here is the screenshot for CBA Staff

Use JBGift card from here : https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/JB-Hi-Fi-Gift-Card-30-50-or-100-…

Use PUMPKINS code to get $35 dollars ,

      Actual price : 347.89 - 35.00 = 312.89

    Will wait for Costco deal.

    • @homersimpson do you know when is the Costco deal expected?

      • +1

Only if your not in a hurry and lucky to get one.

  • +2

Is paying an extra $20ish worth it for a non-dented box?

    • +3

Problem is this is not just about the box - the product itself was refurbished. If you ask me I'd want at least ~$70 discount on this for that refurbishment.

      • +4

They list as refurb because you can't advertise it as new if there is damage to it and they aren't used. The product itself would be brand new just carton damage.

    • They've had similar sales before where there was no damage at all to the boxes. I got one myself, I suspect they ran out of damaged stock or didn't care.

  • +9

This is interesting. The XM3 is brand new, surely they aren't refurbs and have to be box damage?

For those who're considering to buy these cans, this is a great review: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZzCCMQ0rkM8

      Thanks for the link.
I ordered the $377 headphones from Amazon yesterday and really enjoyed the video, thanks.

      • +1

Pleasure. Enjoy your new cans. :)

  • almost getting to sub 350

  • +5

Man is it just me or are these cans dropping in price by the day? First it was Amazon's and now this. The new accpetable price for Ozbargainers are sub $350 now lmao

  • +5

It’s a lucky dip, but I bought a mirrorless camera from the Sony eBay store that had a “damaged box”. When I received it, the only damage to the box consisted of some sticker residue on one side of the box, presumably from a removed promotional sticker. That was it. Not saying these are the same, but the box damage may really not be that bad.

    • +1

      Same here

    • +1

Yeah I got a TV from Sony seconds (advertised as refurbed) at an awesome price and it was delivered pretty much brand new, like someone had taken it home, opened the seal and returned. Pretty incredible!

  • Will this pair nicely with my incoming A&K AK Jr. or is there a better choice out there?

    • AK Jr. Works better with wired headsets, it's wireless capabilities aren't that great. If you want to make the most out of these cans, I'd recommend changing to a Sony DAP to make use of the LDAC capabilities. Though your newer android phones can also do the same if you toggle a few things in developer options.

If you insist on sticking with the AK Jr, you can save a few bucks and get the Sony mdr-1a MK2 which has the same drivers as these wh1000-xm3.

    • +1

I'm not sure if you are serious or not…
Anyway, wireless headphones have their own DAC so it won't be able to take advantage of your AK.

    • If you intend to go wireless with a DAP (and it has to be AK), you will need at least AK70 MK1 to get AptX/AptX-HD. The AK JR does not have any indication of supported Bluetooth Codecs on its specification page so at the very minimum it could be SBC which is bottom of the barrel. So no, you will not be able to get the best out of the WH-1000XM3 via wireless bluetooth. However, you could always use the WH-1000XM3 on cable (3.5mm single ended) with the AK JR. Just not wireless.

Otherwise just stick with wired cans/IEM.

Ok. Thanks guys. What about the Beyerdynamic DT990 PRO then? Its going for $209 at David Jones atm.

    • +1

Totally different kinds of headphones. Closed back wireless ANC vs open back headphones? Very different purposes.

    • -3

Just get some ath mx 50, then move on to sennheiser hd600

      • +1

        That advice makes no sense.

        • -3

They asked for rec's and I gave them?

If you mean the moving on comment, sure jump straight to the more expensive hd600

    • Really depends how, what and where you will be using it. I don't think committing with the DT990 PRO is going to be a good idea for example. Using it at the office is also less than ideal. For home listening, definitely the Beyer.

  • Wait for for Cybermonday

  • Everyday you guys are making the people who took up the Qantas deal feel bad…

    • Not really, they got it first and knew what they were getting into.

  • It looks good, but as a faithful ozbargainer I just don't know how I would feel cheating on the QC35 with the Sony. There are some things that just cannot be forgiven.

    • +3

It'd feel like cheating on rebel Wilson with Scarlett johanssen.

    • Bose is junk.

      Get some audiophile grade equipment.

      • Some people will take a logo over substance. Let them…

      • By that token, Sony is junk too no?

You do realise not everyone is an audiophile and that other factors like design and features (other than sound quality) factor into the vast majority of consumers' decision of what to buy?

        • This is not about audio elitism, at least not in this instance. It's about the fact that some people will buy the inferior product due to their higher perception of the brand's value.

        • design and features (other than sound quality) factor into the vast majority of consumers' decision of what to buy?

          Those people sound like sheep.
Very easy to make money off those pea brains.

Bose employees get 60-70% off their products. My QC35 II was 65% off retail from a former colleague who now works at Bose. Cheap, mass produced products with huge margins.

        • By that token, Sony is junk too no?

No. The sound quality is great.

    • +2

But the Sony's are said to be better in almost every way in like every review? Just buy the better product

      • nope. Sonys aren't able to pair to 2 devices

  • Purchased a Sony product at a similar deal it was brand new no damage.. These box damaged deals bring in ppl who would otherwise not buy..

  • Can’t believe how much these are dropping in price so soon after release already. I managed to score the OG 1000X for $340 back in July last year from JB and thought that was a great price at the time.

    • That or this $449 refurb + a $0 HEY YOU IDIOT sticker

  • Thats for new. Down Down. Who can wait till Xmas sales. Come on AA.

  • Can anybody comment on the bass and sound leakage on these (out of 10)?

Are they suitable for a basshead and would others hear these in an office environment ?

    • +2

Wearing mine right now in an office…. thing is, this is first decent set of I've ever owned so can't really comment.
Don't think anyone can hear my tunes though and the noise cancelling great but hard to hear when someone is trying to talk to me… omfg would you believe as I typed that someone was trying to talk to me.
I love these though, I can say that much.

      • ah that sounds epic man! is the bass eq /clear bass slider any good?

  • New or just box damage? How is the quality of the headphones? Any visible wear?

  • -1

Gosh I'm so sick of seeing this headphone in the headphones tab. It's just flooded with deals for this particular headphone.

  • I just tried this in the airport - the NC is definitely way better than anything else i've tried, but it gave me a bit of a headache after only a minute. Was quite uncomfortable for me.
I have sennheiser NC and although the effect is lower there are no such issues.

So - worth trying before you buy. A shame as the NC is really great, but if I was using them at home in a quiet environment I think it would be overkill

  • +1

I'm unsure if anyone has confirmed this yet, but I contacted Sony AU through ebay and they said they are brand new in the box, the outer packaging may just be damaged in places. For that reason they have to label them as refurb.
