Not 4K… if you were after after 4k that is

    • +7

Refurbished 4K on apple site is $209

        • +1

Apple's refurbs are as good as new with full warranty. Bought a number of them over the years and zero difference from new.

My sisters 5 year old MacBook Air is still going strong and it was a refurb, aside from the box it came in (still proper Apple but more no-frills) you couldn't pick it from new.

      • If you are after a newer model, I would wait till the end of the week as there are rumours of another Apple event coming up. There is a slight chance that they might release or talk about a newer model of Apple TV as Apple is planning to do a lot in the TV segment in 2019.

    • If I was to buy a 4K tv now, what streaming services and tv content serves 4K now? It looks like a lot of amateur YouTube channels have more 4K content than I expected, but not sure about my Netflix shows.

  • +9

paying that much might as well get a shield..

    • As someone who switched from a Nexus Player to a Apple TV 4K, I 100% disagree. The OS and Apps a so much better.

      • +13

Is a Nexus Player a shield?

        • No, but it runs the same shitty OS and has access to the same limited ecosystem of apps.

Also, the Nexus Player got 8.0 a year before the Shield.

    • Agree

There is the Shield and then there is the rest - and Apple TV is way down the list of the rest

      • +4

Apple TV has been, beyond any doubt, the best device of such type since v1. I really do know as I've owned, and still own, quite a few of various types.

        • Disagree. ATV is too restricted - deeply tied into the Apple world. It's a good device, just not the best

The Shield is much more adaptable and has a great user experience.

The Xiaomi box is the best for mucking around with.

A HTPC is the best option if you want a device to do everything.

          • @R4: I own a Xiaomi and it is outclassed by Apple TV. Xiaomi looks and feels cheap. It is not nearly as responsive, the image quality is not as good, and apps are for some reason better on Apple. These are all objective facts, not my opinion, as responsiveness and image quality are measurable.

            • @mrau: Sure, but you can muck around with the Xiaomi in a way that you can't with a ATV. If you're happy with the the default offering that Apple give with the ATV, then you're on to a winner. If you want to mod, then not so good. A HTPC allows you to stream pretty much anyhting you want - far more flexible, if a bit more pricey.

              Each to their own.

Can't jailbreak these yet so I'll pass

    • +5

Can install 3rd party apps like Kodi fork MrMC so no real need for a jailbreak

  • Apppe TV is (over)due for a refresh now !
Still chugging along on A8 chip.

    • +5

A10X fusion for current model actually

    • +5

      Apple TV 4k using A10x….with a fan inside….

      • Can you hear the fan?

        • +8

I can't hear the fan on my Apple TV 4K. It's extremely quiet.

          • @hollykryten: The fan will be controlled by a thermistor, so if you don't use 4K, it may never run anyhow. I haven't checked it, but this is how they do it in all their other devices.

            • @resisting the urge: Yeah i don't have a 4K TV yet so that's probably why. I only run 1080p content. I only got the 4K model for future proofing.

              • @hollykryten: Everything thing is smoother and faster on the 4K model. It’s not just for 4K video.

      • Didn't even realise it had a fan, never heard ours make a sound.

  • +2

    No deal on the 4k?

  • That reminds me I still need to sell mine on eBay. Worst Apple product I’ve ever bought, possibly in top 3 worst gadgets ever purchased.

    • +1

I'll have to agree. I hated how Siri wasn't smart enough to search a show through Netflix (free) and instead kept recommending paid episodes through the ABC app (or whatever it was)

    • +2

What exactly where you trying to achieve with this device? I’m actually curious, not having a go at you.
It does everything I need it to. Plays Netflix, music, Plex , sbs app, podcasts, beams my photos and videos.

      • I used to have an ATV2 which served me well in the days where Netflix apps on TVs were not great. It was also hooked up to my stereo so I could Airplay music. Nowadays I use Spotify connect for my music on wireless speakers and much prefer to Netflix etc via my TV’s native apps/remote. I thought Apple was onto something big with the ATV4 and apps so I sold my ATV2 for a good price (as you could get Kodi on it easily) and upgraded to the 4. Have maybe used it a dozen times since. I know, my own fault, I was just hoping for something big which never came.

        • Jailbreaked ATV2 is an awesome 720p media player.

  • +4

Moved from windows media center to Apple TV, pretty happy with it.

MrMC plus tvheadend for free to air, has all the streaming apps in one box, and the Freeview catchup apps as well.

Single remote with CEC support (and supports some Non-CEC TVs with IR blaster in remote control).

Had a Xiaomi Mi Box before that, it was terrible compared to ATV.

  • What does this do a good smart tv doesn’t?

    • The software gets regularly updated.

      • And it is very polished. Data is well managed (as far as data management goes)

I have a 3 year old very expensive Samsung smart TV. The OS and the software always was a joke- even the EPG is behaves like a recalcitrant, PVR isn't much better, and it encrypts the mpegs so you can only use the TV to play them back from a share or a USB disk it writes to. Filing is not its strong point either, so once you have a few things recorded finding them at a later date gets gradually harder. A real mess- and the apps are badly written and in most cases badly maintained. Each works differently enough (button functions even vary between apps) so some family members get confused and press the wrong thing, the list goes on an on. And you have to accept a bunch of third party apps that Samsung insists should be on your TV even if you don't want them in the way. And they don't approve lots of important apps so what you can do with it is massively limited from the start.

Worst thing is that the updates are very occasional (never now) and never included important security patches. Also leaks data like a seive, calls home to Samsung and all their vendor buddies, if you watch how it reports on your usage and actions over the wire you quickly unplug and place it on an untrusted, isolated part of your network before going any further.

It is so bad it is best to keep them off the Internet- and your own network altogether.

    • It's a lot more responsive thats for sure.

My current-gen LG OLED has most of the apps I use already built in, but they're no where near as performant as they are on my Apple TV 4 (regular or the 4K model).

  • …iTunes…and all that Apple stuff

  • Hmm. Tempted to get this and replace my raspberry pi running Kodi. How does MrMC run x265?

  • +1

I would wait for an ATV 4K on sale. It will still cost more but a lot more powerful. Not that this 4th gen isn’t capable, just the 4K version is worth the extra.

  • Not worth it. The 4K one is labaelled caution don't buy… let alone the older gen one.

    • +3

I reckon macrumors is wrong there. The ATV hardware doesn’t get upgraded that often, and the A10X in the 4K can handle everything media. Heck it just got a software update with Dolby Atmos. Any update I suspect would be at least a year away.

I waited until the September keynote and there was no new ATV announced, so I got one at an eBay sale. So on that basis there might be a new model tomorrow!

    • I think Macrumors are very wrong. The A10x inside the Apple TV 4k is still the most powerful media player CPU on the market. The A10X is used in the current iPad Pro and is about ~80% as fast as the new A12 in the iPhone XS. Given that it's actively cooled, its probably has higher sustained performance.

Besides, what upgrades would apple add?

      • Plus if/when they do get around to replacing it, they'll only replace it with something that encourages more lock-in or limits what you can use it for.

    • +1

What a load of nonsense. The Apple TV 4K (5th Gen) only came out a year ago, I can't see them replacing it for at least a year, probably longer.

The 3rd-gen Apple TV lasted almost four years, and the 5th-gen is significantly more powerful and future-proofed than it was. A10X, 3GB RAM plus gigabit ethernet, 802.11ac and Bluetooth 5.0 should set it up for several more years of software-based capabilities.

  • Bought from Officeworks for price match. Apparently the Apple TV 4's (not 4Ks) are an "online only" item now. So you have to factor in $9 shipping with them.

    • Officeworks charges $25.95 shipping for me i kid not. Apparently Rockhampton is classed as a country location according to the Officeworks shipping so the shipping price is jacked up hugely. That is the stupdiest thing ever and such a rip off in price. Rockhampton is not a country area.

The irony is i can select click and collect and it gets shipped to the Rockhampton store for free with free click and collect. Spend a few dollars in bus travel to get to the store. Stuff that $25.95 shipping.

      • Rockhampton is not a country area.

        Lol, it really is mate.
