  • Damn! That's cheap. Does this mean the G7X M3 is about to be announced, with killer features? 🤔

It's 15c more. You can buy a plastic bag at Coles/Woolworths for that money.

Extra $50 off with the amex offer though

      • or 2 CCs and $100 off

  • This good for travelling/cinematography?

    Or the a6000?

    • It's pretty good for travelling. The IQ is great.

A view finder would be ideal thou but it isn't a must.

    • This is a fine stills camera. Its video will be meh (probably worse than your phone but it does have zoom capabilities). It is also far more portable/pocketable than the a6000.

I used it for travelling around Europe for a month, my fav shots are in my Switzerland Video but all the videos on my channel were shot on that trip with the G7X. I took 2 extra batteries (3 total) and a USB powered charger, so I could put a Xioami Bank in my backpack with the batteries on charge, never ran out and filmed A LOT of footage.

      • Not sure if it's to do with the editing, or the weather/time of the day, but the colors in your 'the sights of Italy' video are vibrant and look a lot better, compared to the one you linked here. Overall, great shots and beautiful places.

they were colour graded to try and get some extra colour out of Switzerland was very overcast, with rain coming in, Italy was perfect sunny weather (except for Venice at the end which was horrible weather) so that would be why Italy was much more vibrant.

@camshandez: Makes sense. Hope you've had great time visiting all those fantastic countries and cities.

Many Youtubers use this as their daily vlogging camera, so I would say this for ease of use and traveling.

    • The lack of EVF for me is a deal breaker on the G7X when travelling out in the bright sun. The Sony RX100 series would be great for you.

      • +1

The guy needs a camera for travel, and given the price, I think this is the better option. Sony RX100 series are quite pricey, and for vlogging/traveling, actually the Canon has better colors. Check this video comparison of the RX100 V and G7X II: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uQpTveQCmPo

Keep in mind, the Sony RX100 V costs more than the price of TWO Canon G7X IIs. The Sony RX100 series that's comparable to this Canon is the RX100 III, which is about AU$100 more expensive than this one, even on sale, and the Canon kills it in vlogging and travel videos.

  • How would this compare to a Sony RX100?

      Check this out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uQpTveQCmPo

And that's the Sony RX100 V, which costs twice or more the price of two Canon G7X II's. lol

      • Thanks for that.
I was considering an older model RX100 around the same price

You are exaggerating any differences. Both G7X II and RX100 m3 are very very capable cameras. At this price, however, the G7X II is a much better buy if you are happy with the trade offs.

The Canon has a touch screen, longer zoom, (arguable) better colour profiles and a lower price.
The RX100 m3 has a view finder, (arguable) better stills image quality, and in camera panorama which is not in the G7x II (this last one might be a deal breaker for travel cameras)

Rx100m3 has a few more video centric features. The G7x mk ii is also 2 years newer than the rx100 m3.

Have a look at the dpreview review for the G7x ii, they make several comparisons between the G7x ii with the RX100 m3 and they test multiple copies of each and for BOTH cameras they note that copy variation occurs.

        • I was going to purchase the RX100 however you’ve really put a spanner in the works…
          I’m really unsure now!
          What to do

          • +1

@Muscles: At the end of the day, barring the big feature differences (viewfinder vs touch screen and longer zoom) you will likely be happy with the results of both.

To throw another wrench into this, whenever an ebay sale rolls around you can pick up a new panasonic lx100 for around $640-650. To me the lx100 is a stronger camera than either of the compacts discussed here but it is a bit bigger so is not quite as pocketable.

You have a lot of options at this price point :)

  • Owned this camera before. HDR is painstakingly slow.

  • Thanks OP, missed out on Ted’s deal of $634 the other week. See you tomorrow HN

  • Is the photo quality much better than iPhone 8? Or just more functions & buttons? Thanks

    • +1

I don't have this camera but the quality you'll get out of these 1 inch sensor cameras will be better than the tiny ones in the best smartphone cameras.

I have the G9X Mark1 which is a lower model than the G7X mark II but it I find it performs very well. I'm not a photography expert but there's a certain "depth" (is how I'd describe it) that you see in images taken with larger sensors.

I think the advantage that an iPhone 8 camera has over a Canon or any other dedicated camera maker is that Apple invests millions of dollars each year to improve the quality of their camera's automatic mode through image processing and smart adjustments to camera settings, so much so that it's hard for Canon to compete. If you know how to tweak your point-and-shoot's settings just a little to suit the photo you're taking then you'll be really impressed with the results compared with even the best smartphone.

  • Missed this ugh. I wonder when this will be on sale again…
