Monkey (Magic) - The Complete Collection 16 DVD Set $47.50 (50% off) + $7.50 Shipping @ ABC Shop

1370

The complete Monkey collection! Includes all 52 episodes.

Primal chaos ruled the worlds before Monkey. Monkey was born of time, of Heaven and Earth, sun and moon, out of a stone egg. He was irrepressible!
The place was like ancient China and the time might have been a thousand years ago. They fought – and they thought – then, as now.
Holy Tripitaka prayed. One disciple, Sandy, is a fish-spirit. Pigsy, expelled from Heaven for greed, is a spirit of a pig. He is changing.
Everything changes. There is a horse, once a dragon, now evolving into human form.
Monkey, Horse, Sandy, Pigsy and Tripitaka are all upon a journey as long as life.

Read this as Monkey Magic The Gathering for some weird reason.

Even in Heaven, they say desire ends in tears.

    • Where can I buy that btw?

  • +4

Classic! Only thing missing here is a flying cloud.

    • +13

Evil must have good to feed upon.

    • We want so much when we need so little. But the illumined man wants for nothing

  • +3

    I enjoyed Monkey Magic a few decades ago. I don't know if I'd be able to handle 16 DVD's / 52 episodes!

    • +36

A good man may suffer until his goodness flows. The cause of all suffering is desire, and even to desire not to desire is still to be caught on the wheel.

      • +3

        Mind. Blown.

    • I think you will still be able to watch them all, I was watching a few on youtube and its still great :)

  • +3

    awesome!

  • +4

Wow great deal! Ahh… Pigsy. Very funny.

    • +1

      Where is that lazy swine?!

  • +9

    Protip.

The series is called 'Monkey' whilst 'Monkey Magic' is the theme song :)

I got schooled over this when referring to it as Monkey Magic

    • +15

It'll always be Monkey Magic to me

      • +4

Sorry I have to edit the title to be the same as on the ABC Shop.

        • +2

Don't be sorry. It's always been called Monkey.

          • +1

@Zak: I didn't want to hurt the feeling and damage the memory of HunterOfBargains20. S/he added (Magic) back to the title so Monkey Magic must be special to her/him.

            • +2

@alvian: Don't be speciesist. Perhaps the mod is a monkey. Or maybe a magician.

    • +4

Too true, but even die hard fans have adopted Money Magic as the de-facto title. Given there are many, many version of Journey to the West, it is a useful distinction.

I always call it "Monkey", because my geeky pedantry makes me really popular with the ladies.

      • Given there are many, many version of Journey to the West, it is a useful distinction.

But how many of them are named Monkey?

Also, can anyone recommend a Journey to the West film with English dubbing or subtitles where they actually make it to the scriptures?

        • Journey to the West is an epic novel it will never fit into one film. Its ending is actually not that interesting a story for a film. (No monsters to fight. Everybody gets a happy ending.) There are many TV series of the story but I don't know if they are accessible to English speaking viewers.

Found this website with a translation of the book. It might be an abridged version, I don't have time to compare it with the full Chinese text to be certain. http://www.innerjourneytothewest.com/english/books/JTW/index…

  • +2

Does this version have the original Japanese audio? The box set I have doesn't

    • +2

Hi Sammy, it looks like it is only the english audio in this one. If i can find out more i'll let you know.

      • -1

My collection (different cover) doesn’t have English subtitles. Actor’s engrish is very difficult to understand.

  • +1

Great show but I have to say…DVD?

    • +11

Yeah, good point. Should be VHS in keeping with the vintage of the show.

      • +1

I still have some episodes recorded on Beta.

    • I was hoping for a 4K release. I've always wanted to count Pigsy's individual whiskers

  • +2

Great deal, for the great sage.

  • +4

Favorite clip right here: Monkey calls demon a 'poofter'

    • +2

      Oh the good old days……

      • +3

Yep, wouldn't catch Monkey clapping with jazzhands

    • +3

Damn you for showing that clip! I started with that scene and had a good chuckle to myself, 30mins later I am at 'that side' of Youtube!! lol

  • +1

The Wire (DVD) is also on sale for $45.

The beautiful Masako Natsume played tripitaka but sadly died of cancer very young

    • +2

Thank you. This has settled a 30 year argument with my older brother.

As a little kid I was convinced that Tripitaka was a girl but my brother always said "No, he's a boy".

Can I now say "we were both right?"

      • Can I now say "we were both right?"

No, you were wrong, your brother was right.

Tripitaka is a naïve man, fairly described as a boy (played by a woman).

      • +3

same here, as a young child this confused me more than the magic in the show.

    • +3

Horse (Shunji Fujimura) and Pigsy 2 (Tonpei Hidari) also passed away recently.
      R.I.P.

      Explains the bald bonce

    • Sheeesh, cheapest it's been?

      • Possibly.

  • +6

I loved Monkey when I was growing up.

When all my friends were running around with pretend swords and guns I would have my trusty staff!

Sigh, I miss being a kid.

    • +8

      canrelate

I was lucky enough to have a sega master system at the time and friends would come around most afternoons to play it. This was only until 5:30 when id turn the master system of and kick everyone out to watch Monkey on ABC.

      • +2

        Alex Kidd FTW!!

  • +3

Damn i'd buy this just to watch the last episode just to see how it ends. Maybe to see how it starts also lol.
I don't think the ABC every played the full season back when I was a kid.
Was it the Afternoon Show? They had the best cartoons back in the day.

  • This is the kncok off 'monkey' dramas by Japanese.

    • Much of Japanese culture was borrowed from China.

  • +3

The only time I have ever heard of one being described as irrepressible.

  • +2

is this journey to the west ?

    • +1

      A bastardised version of it.

    • The Japanese version.

    • Harakiri version.

  • +7

Who remembers when they changed Pigsy? The second one was never as good..

    • +2

My observation skills were so poor When I was a kid, I didn’t even notice they didn’t speak English.

  • +1

I wonder if my kids would like watching this? Was one of my favourite shows as a kid. Im sure the messages in each episode is timeless…

    • +1

Give it a shot, our kids got heaps the good old shows growing up and loved them. They still love 80's music above most of what came after too.

      • That's cause 80's music is the best!

  • +3

Loved this when I was a kid. Remember it being on at 6pm weeknights when I watched it back in the 80s.

There was also a new 2018 remake called "The New Legends Of Monkey". If anybody missed it the first time it was shown on TV. ABC ME are repeating this weekly starting Tuesday evening 9th October.

Also the 2007 Monkey Magic Movie released by Cine-Asia shown on SBS a few time and also available on Blu-ray.

Along with a few Computer games like Monkey Magic (1999) PS1 and Enslaved: Odyssey to the West (2010) Windows, PS3, Xbox 360.

    • I like how the New Legends dealt with Tripitaka being a man/woman confusion.

  • +1

    M. O. N. K. E. Y.

  • +11

The spirit of this deal is irrepressible!

  • +3

    My childhood:)

  • +1

This is the only show I have ever watched and it has been as good now as it was 30 years ago.

    • -1

If you've only watched one show, what are you comparing it to?

  • +4

Closing song is superior - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G1dlaikCaa4

    Goodies next

    • +1

      Good times :)

Thank you Op purchased to bring some memories back.
I'm sure I will be having a Monkey marathon when it comes.

  • +1
    • Hah, I remember that, one of the funniest scenes in the whole series.

    • Yeah who uses 'sissy' anymore! 😂

  • +2

As soon as Pigsy changed actors you can stop watching.

  • -2

Warning. I bought this. Watched one episode. Sold it.

I loved it 20 years ago but rewatching it was awful. Nostalgia is a cruel mistress sometimes.

    • +2

      Not so irrepressible now? :(

    • I think it still holds up - the cheesiness is part of its appeal.

    • +4

Me too, it was bloody painful to watch beyond first three episodes. Same theme every episode,

Pigsy is cool though. Loves chicks and food, sandy is constantly stoned too.

  • +1

Didn't even think about it. Just purchased.

  • Journey to the West should be the technically correct title.

  • +1

There are many tv iterations of this show and thankgod I grew up watching this one, I always liked Monkey's staff and his pink cloud.
