Aftershock Laptop 15.6" i7-8750h, 8GB RAM, GTX 1050ti, 512GB SSD with Mechanical Keyboard $1669 @ AfterShock PC

70

I am currently in the market for a laptop so the Google overlords have been pushing laptops ads everywhere, one of which caught my eye.

Aftershock, a brand I've never heard of was selling a 19.9mm thick gaming laptop with amazing modifiable specs with a mechanical keyboard and a super thin monitor bezel. After a little research, I found they are another Celvo rebrand like metabox, so it safe.
Reviews of this laptop aren't bad either, the biggest complaint people had was the speakers were not that great and the touchpad wasn't a precision touchpad

  • Hp omen 15 is 1699 for better specs

    • link?

After a few modifications, I ended up with 16gb ram with 512SSD AND 1TB HDD/SSD hybrid drive, 1060 6gb with a Metal chassis instead of a plastic one used in omen for $2183

I only see the omen for $2199 and its not as thin as this laptop, 19.9mm compared to 24.5mm of omen

      nevermind, maybe code is expired

In my opinion, I think the standard now for a bargain is, 1050ti laptops at around the $1000-$1200 mark.
1060 maybe around the $1300-$1500 mark.

If you're going down the "custom gaming laptop" route, Metabox have almost the very same laptop as this for $1199 and a 1060 version for $1329.

    • This is like comparing a Macbook Pro to a crappy plastic windows laptop. Build quality isn't compared in adjacent to prices.

      • +2

Yep, I agree the brushed metal is definitely more appealing and will feel like a higher quality product… but you ARE paying $400 more for that.

Maybe I'm in the minority here, but I've never heard of Aftershock until now, so not sure I agree with your "Macbook Pro" comparison.
I'm not sure the extra $400 is justified with all that said.

My underlying point still stands, $1699 for a 1050ti laptop with a 1080p screen is not a bargain anymore.

How have I got -3 downvotes for saying this isn't a bargain, yet the bargain itself only has +2 upvotes (one being the default one from the OP)…. !? :)

            @Deviner: Welcome to ozbargain.

          • -1

@Deviner: Because of you are dreaming. I have been interested in a lab top for a while. The same specs will be over 2k. I would say it is a great find!

The only similar price and spec only available in Amazon America.

I would hope to know what laptop you are using and how much you bought for?

            • @[Deactivated]: I've already given a link in the comment you're replying to for the cheaper metabox alternative of this.

But it's clearly down to personal preference and also what it's intended for.
If there was a trade-off on price between performance or looks, I always lean more toward performance.

If it's very light gaming, yeah this will be awesome and look great in the process.
But if you're looking to play any 2016 games onwards in ultra/high detail, then a 1050ti is going to be left behind.

I've had a few gaming laptops in the past, as well as just standard ones and tablet-esque laptops as well, but I have a desktop for gaming.

@[Deactivated]: I ended up getting the Dell Xps 15 9570 with the 4k UHD screen, i7 8750h, GTX 1050Ti, 16gb ram, 512gb Ssd for $2k the other day with the eBay sitewide sale and it was delivered overnight so they can be found.

              • @Boulders: Is it still on? link please

              • @Boulders: Do you have the link? I would love to buy one as well! Or possible send me a receipt I will ask dell to match for me ?

Cheers mate! It is a great deal!!

                Well done!

    • There is a 1060 variant too. But initially, I was very close to getting a metabox but this one kills it with a mechanical keyboard, and thin bezels comparable to the AERO. I was going to get the Prime S range of metabox but this is similarly priced (i set the same specs on both and its almost exactly the same) and I get a better-looking device and a mechanical keyboard!

I'd seriously consider getting this (if I hadn't already bought a gaming laptop recently).

I just came here to say that keyboard layout is perfect and PRAISE JESUS the webcam is at the top.

Do they have thunderbolt 3 for this?

    • nope just;
      1x USB Type-C

      1x USB 2.0

      2x USB 3.0

      1x HDMI 2.0

      2x Mini Displayport

      1x Audio Jack

      1x Microphone jack

      1x LAN (10/100/1000Mbps)

      1x Kensington Lock

      1x DC-in jack

  • Can a 1050Ti run 144hz @ 1080p?

    • Maybe Minecraft!

I don't understand why companies keep using high end CPUs in gaming laptops. Most games are extremely GPU bottlenecked. I wouldn't pair anything slower than a GTX 1070 with a mobile i7. If a laptop has a 1050Ti in it, it should have something like an 8th gen i3 and the price of the laptop should barely be scratching 1k. Budget GPU goes with budget CPU.

    • Completely agree.

I'd rather cut back on the CPU to an i5 and upgrade the GPU… but it seems to be the same for every laptop nowadays.

General public are still probably obsessed about having the latest i-series, despite the fact it's sapping their battery, running hotter and not providing much of a performance boost over an i5.

      • Thanks for this comment. My i7 3630 Samsung with gt650 is amazingly still going strong. It's similar in performance to a low, mid qc part. It cost a grand in 2011. The gt650 is easily the limiting factor sure to unbalanced specs. In 2018 that performance, with better GPU is still worth $1000. We're seeing examples of how we're a premium market due to decades of economic solidity despite a cheaper CPU and better GPU being more appropriate.

      • I'd like to see a sub $800 laptop with a 1080P panel, i3 8100 mobile equivalent, 8GB of ram and a 1050Ti. Have the GPU switch completely off when not gaming and throw in a huge ass battery. That'd be a dream come true.

  • Now that US retailers like newegg are shipping here, these prices will evaporate. $3k prices should be more like $2k and that is going to happen. Everything had plateaued basically so they will have much longer useful life spans. That means future proofing gpus is more important. A $2k laptop should have a 1070, snappy panel and good kb with easily replaceable keys. We're a dumping ground for overpriced and unbalanced units. This will change. My next machine will be that $2k unit with proper specs. And it with storage upgrades it will last 5 plus years. Boom.

  • This looks like a great priced and built PC against the big guns!
Too bad there isn't many reviews and more in depth details about the device.
