  • FYI. They're also on their website.

    • Oops, update coming up!

    The battery

    https://www.aldi.com.au/en/special-buys/special-buys-sat-29-…

Is not a car battery. It's a small (38AH) deep cycle battery meant for use off grid (EG camping) for slow drain appliances.

It's not designed for starting a car.

    • +3

That's a different battery in a different weekly special. This (550 CCA battery) is available the following week (not on website yet).

      • +2

Ok, didn't see they had 2 different batteries.

        disregard.

        • +1

Yeah, could be confusing if someone goes in for the car battery and accidentally picks up a leftover deep cycle and tries to put it in their car…

      • the 550cca looks like just 1 model fits all ?

i thought car batteries comes with model code in different sizes, orientations & CCA/RC

        • +2

For your Audi car (sounds the same)

          • @zombie hunter: Yeah they do, its not one size fits all. I reckon Aldis will get a lot of returns.

        • 550cca should be ok for a small 4cyl car but won't cut it for anything larger or Diesel. Also, the physical size might be an issue if yours is a lower profile type.

          • @mikmac: i have racq roadside assist and they charge $180 for supply & install

my current battery is over 4 years

you reckon i should replace it now or just wait till current one dies and call roadside assist when it does (which probably going to be stuck for more than an hour)

            • @dcep: I've had the same battery for 10yrs+ Key is keep water up. RAA etc are sealed up rubbish in my experience.

              • @tunzafun001: Another key is preventing deep discharges. These can reduce battery capacity to the point to where just leaving the car for a day or two will discharge the battery enough to result in slow cranking.
I got a sealed battery which has leaked (and cannot top up the water), I would have to agree with you about "maintenance free" batteries.

                • +1

@Cleremy: Maintenance free - I grabbed a dead one from hard rubbish. Drilled holes / levered off the top. Filled it up. Charged it overnight in partners car. Still going strong 4 years later. Maintenance free and Battery are oximorons..and the RAA will treat you like the later!

I do also charge them up fully every time I do an oil change as part of my service routine. I dormant battery I would do every 3 weeks in summer/ 5 in winter. Warmer temps, faster reactions, faster discharge …Chemistry 101.

            • @dcep: Personally, I wait for the supercheap/autobahn/Repco sales and change mine every 5yrs or so. I'm not sure what's under that autoXS sticker but I generally stick with the brand name stuff. Also, I wouldn't wait for it to die, it's not worth the stress for a few bucks.

Based on the look, it looks like a (using exide codes because I worked there…) 54CMF or maybe a 55D23CMF.

Pretty much rule out anything European. They all used terminals that are set into the casing (DIN55/DIN66 most commonly).

From my memories, if it's the 54CMF pretty much commodores and falcons were the main ones. The 55D23CMF was a little more broad and fits in a lot of mid sized Japanese cars (eg. Mazda 6). Really it comes down to mounting the battery and the mechanism in your car & polarity for the 2 terminals.

Case doesn't look overly familiar so certainly not a re-brand of a brand name battery here in Australia. Maybe something OEM from a major car manufacturer. 2 years warranty seems pretty ok and average CCA rating. I'd have to get my hands on one to feel the weight to tell if it will last or not.

When it goes on sale, I'll swing by an Aldi and update this post with how I think it'll last.

          • @Antecedence: the size depends on the mounting tray / bracket right ? is there leeway on getting bigger battery into the smaller tray ?

            does 2135 fits 54CMF / 55D23CMF ?

            • +1

@dcep: the D23CMF is quite a bit taller than the 54CMF. I had an Accord euro and with some minor changes to to the mount, removing the plastic battery tray & stupid foam sleave (sitting the battery on the metal undertray) was able to go from a 60CMF (https://goo.gl/xKzBEQ) to a 55D23CMF (https://goo.gl/5gHpdx) because the heights are identical but the width very different.

There are a few different routes to go down if you want a more powerful battery in your car. You can either go bigger battery (if it will fit), better quality battery (Using the extreme range from exide, more led = more power = better battery) or moving to the big leagues and buying orbital or AGM batteries with virgin led (hello $$$$).

what do you mean by 2135?

  • For anyone also considering the push mower, Bunnings also has a similar unit for $58.

    • Any experience with saxon?

  • Has anyone bought the Aldi car battery before (if they offered it) and can report the polarity and dimensions?

    • +1

Well there's one positive and one negative terminal. :)

You can see there are blue and red plastic caps over the terminals for negative and positive. As for the dimensions they are on the website:

      https://www.aldi.com.au/en/special-buys/special-buys-sat-6-o…

Looks similar to an Exide 550 CCA small car battery I bought from Costco for $88 when they were doing 25% off.

      • Thanks, I Googled but did not trawl around the Aldi website itself.
