  • Didn't know they came out with this model… interesting!

    • yep, it is a direct competitor to the XPS 15.

      • Protip: No need to upload JPG images. Simply link directly to the deal page: otherwise the "Go To Deal" Link will just take you to an image file. Ozbargain system takes care of thumbnails.

        • aha… thanks for the tip. it is my first posting.

    • really not sure of its purpose or why you would go this over the Yoga 730 15. The yoga has the I7 8th gen, a touchscreen and is convertible, plus its cheaper!

      • +4

A couple of reasons I can think of -

        1. X15E has an H series intel cpu, which is more powerful than the U series. The i5-8300H outperforms the i7-8550U.
        2. Improved dGPU GTX 1050 vs 1050ti (X1E)
        3. Thinkpad chassis is generally more robust

..your right, the 730 15 is cheaper, and does offer touchscreen, but it all depends what you are looking for. The X1E is being positioned as a competitor with Macbook Pro and XPS 15.

        • Good pickup although the 13-15% increase in both of those I'm not sure warrants that extra sort of cash. Definitely depends what you are looking to do with it.

  • Does this model have any similarities to the X1 Carbon? Size, weight, build quality etc?

    • Quite dissimilar. You're looking at 1.13KG at the Carbon, which is very thin and light.

This GTX 1050ti equipped model has a bit more heft to it, thanks to it's dual fan heatsink design.

      • Non-touch model: starting at 1.7 kg
      • Multi-touch model: starting at 1.8 kg

which is necessary since the video card is going to put out quite a bit of heat. Its really at the same class of a (middle end) gaming laptop, except it's also wearing a business suit.

8G is a bit low for a $2,000 laptop. Chrome is a memory hungry beast. At a similar price, you can get better specs on XPS especially they are doing 20% off combined with 10% off gift card deal:

    • It is a difficult call between the XPS15 and X1E. The problem IMO with the XPS 15's is quality control. Don't get me wrong, the XPS 15 is a great machine, but there have been a lot of issues relating to QC i.e. coil whine, fan noise etc. We have a XPS 15 9570 in our family, and we have ran into some of these issues.

      • While I agree about the XPS having quality control issues, so have Lenovo: https://www.tomshardware.com/news/lenovo-laptop-quality-cont…

        • THanks for sharing. great to get a balanced perspective.

Here is another article re: the XPS https://www.ultrabookreview.com/23071-xps-15-9570-review-fol…

I'm in two minds whether to get an XPS or X1E

          • @rx2: I am the same. I am in process of returning xps 13 with issues. I figured I my aswell get a better pc too. The x1 extreme is significantly more expensive

            • @Elanzer: I agree the X1E is a lot of money. I am looking at an FHD display, and the X1E display is poorer in comparison to the XPS both in terms of nits and sRGB coverage. https://www.laptopmain.com/lenovo-thinkpad-x1-extreme-review…

For the time being I think I am going to go with the XPS. I think the DPC latency issues will be solved shortly. There was a tweet from Frank Azor that they are working on a fix https://twitter.com/AzorFrank/status/1044479012389703680

              • @rx2: U going for the fhd xps 15 with i7 16gb 512gb? I find it hard to go for that and the 4k version

                • +1

@Elanzer: I was going to go with the i5 8300h. I don't think the additional cost is worth the extra performance. http://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i7-8750H-vs-… I read somewhere also, that the i5 8300H actually outperforms the i7 in some tasks also. https://laptopmedia.com/comparisons/intel-core-i5-8300h-vs-i…

The 8300H is also less susceptible to the throttling and heat management issues that are often reported with the XPS. We already have an XPS 15 8300h in the house, and in terms of performance it is fine for my purposes. In terms of RAM and SSD, these are easily upgradable components, which can be obtained at a cheaper price.

                  • @rx2: Once you buy ram and upgrade the ssd. Isnt that nearly the cost of the xps 15 with the 8750h.

                    • @Elanzer: Over the i5 8300 ($2099), it is $800 more for the i7 + 16gb + 512gb ssd. You can probably pickup 16GB memory for ~$250 (16GB), and a 512GB ssd for ~250, and maybe cheaper if you are a OZBargainer. For me the only thing I would upgrade is the memory. But it is horses for courses, everyone is different.

                      • @rx2: With Ebay sales it's more like 1679.2 for i5 and i7 is 2319.2

Thinkpad being business grade is not supposed to compete with home use XPS

Annoying lenovo charges 600 for the 4k hdr display :(

  • Cashrewards show 10% cash back on lenovo, any reason to think won't work on this purchase?

    • CR site says

"Cashback may not be payable if you use a coupon code that is not listed on this site." and for Shopback they will not track purchases using "Promo codes or voucher codes not approved by ShopBack"

You can go here to check if the coupon is listed., so it's likely you may not be able get any form of cashback for this particular item

  • Just a heads up, if anyone is a student / teacher you can go through Lenovo's education store and get another ~$100-150 off or so.
