  • Site says "FREE SHIPPING on all used computers.".

Can you replace the mobo in these? ie is it a standard uATX like Acers I've seen, or something ugly like Dell?

    • Unlikely. IIRC had it's own form factor mobo. Also note the low profile PCI-e slot, if you care about that.

Sydney postage is $12 for up to 20kg according to postage calculator, not bad, not bad at all…

    • i would have posted it if it had more than a few hours to go …

finished yesterday 59 Bux INC SHIPPING! however no dvd reader, less ram, slower CPU…
free pickup in Brisbane… 39 bux!!! watching to see if they will relist as for 39 bux if you can get it… would make a great base for mobo/case…

      • Not likely. From what I remember these have a special motherboard, it's most definitely not a good case to build from, unless you're happy with the guts of it. :)

        • yep, ive done a few dells, only difference is you need a low profile video card, and sometimes a laptop optical drive, but they are nice and neat and small..(yeah you need to keep the mobo usually)

but you wouldnt buy it for the case alone…

Prescotts are power hungry enough that if you stick one under a desk, it can make an effective foot heater, which is nice with winter approaching :)

    • lol. also, i've heard that as computer components age they become less efficient and give off even more heat (?). could probably cook a roast on this ol' dinosaur.

      • +1

Don't believe so, only thing I know of is the capacitors going off with age.

As for more heat, just make sure it is cleaned out for dust and thermal paste replaced.

        • +1

It's actually amazing how much different a fresh application of thermal paste can make.. I've seen systems from HP, et al, where the paste has actually split (ie. dried under the heatsink, but watery around the outside). Terrible quality considering the cost difference for them.

    • Don't you mean PresHOTT!!!

    • True.

Despite its many improvements, the Prescott core of the Celeron D had at least one major drawback - heat. Unlike the fairly cool-running Northwood Celeron, the Prescott-256 had a class-rated TDP of 73 W, which prompted Intel to include a more intricate copper core/aluminum finned cooler to help handle the additional heat

But I suppose if it's for an aunt who only turns it on once a week, it might be ok.

    Are you frikkin serious?

  • Are there any trade secrets on the HDD?

  • Pretty good for a MAME or Jukebox project for sure.

  • What size HDD does it take and are they easily changed out of these mini cases?

    • 3.5" SATA

      • some also have size limitations, i know my old dell wouldn't take a 1TB drive…(even after a bios update that updated it a bit) doesn't stop me using it as a media PC and streaming to it though…
