  • Important Specs :

    • 2 GB DDR2 memory Dual channel
    • 80 Gb SATA 7200 rpm hard disk drive
  • Pretty good price! Note: No operating system included.

    • but, price for Genuine windows XP is over $150.

  • Those business PC's are genuine dogs. Time to move up to the HP 4000/6000/8000 with Windows 7 a much better solution for business.

    • +5

but at $150 it is a hot dog. cheap as price for a c2duo cpu.

  • Sounds good for HT PC, just need to add a low profile video card.

  • +1

I support heaps of these at work & they don't last much longer than 3-4 years.

    • +6

Since when does anything last longer than 3-4 years in I.T? Including most people!

      • A lot of PC's do last a fair bit longer, I would be cautious about these since they are already likely to be around 3 years old.

        • We had these out our work also, the issues I saw were caused from heat. This is because they are a compact desktop case, and there is not a lot of air flow.

BTW if anyone wants HD Tv Tuner I have a MagicBox II USB you can have for $15 + postage.

        • @h4lcyon
I've repaired one of these at home after a relative managed to take one home for free, a good vacuum should do because at the front fan's intake, there's a plastic cover that sort of redirects all the airflow from the front directly into the CPU.
There's also a rear fan at the PSU IIRC.

      • I have a 10 years old laptop. Recently bought 2 PCMCIA cards for it - 1 for wifi and 1 for 4 USB2 ports. I'm still using it.

        • congratulations. would you like a prize? :)

  • Do you have any sound cards that can be used in this PC ? I will need 5.1 output.

  • +1

We are just phasing these out at work but they still run quite well.

  • +1

These can be had cheaper on ebay (admittedly without the 1 year warranty). eg $120 with free delivery:

    http://cgi.ebay.com.au/HP-Compaq-dc7700-Ultra-slim-Desktop-/…

    • This one has 2GB memory and no OS. The one on ebay has OS but with 1GB memory.

      • Yep, but the ebay one has a DVD burner and mouse + KB. Depends what you need I guess.

        • Plus the extra 1GB can be had at your local computer shop for under $20.

    • +1

for HTPC you wouldn't need XP anyways
      Just add ubuntu and/or XMBC

  • I have something similar using a an acer machine same CPU and RAM, added a 2TB drive and a nvidia 210 graphics card, with HDMI out.

It plays everything I have thrown at it. I am running xbmc-live (http://xbmc.org/download/)

The only thing I would change is the graphics card, shop around for with without a fan, the graphics card fan is the loudest part of the machine, and I leave the machine running 24/7

  • You could get a new PC with longer warranty for extra $100.
    Faster CPU, bigger HDD…….

    • +2

You could get a $250 desktop, but it won't be shipped and you'd have to line up in MSY to get it:

      CPU Athlon 2 x2 255 - $64
      Mobo AsRock N68S3-UCC $45
      RAM 2G 1333 PQI - $23
      Hitachi Desktar 500GB - $39
      Thermaltake V3 case and PSU - $73
      Build fee $70

      no shipping.

  • For those looking at these for HTPC option (as i was this morning), there is a better option in my opinion:
    http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/01/xtreamer-ultra-htpc-hands…
Reading on another forum they will be priced for around $300!!
    Worth considering !!

    • Anything that comes in Australia gets a ridiculously mark-up. We pay a lot more than yanks do for stuff like these. I doubt you can get that for $300 AUD.

Most Nvidia ION2 HTPC's in Australia cost over $400~500

      • +1
Our dollar is nearly equal to the US dollar at the moment.
Why we still have to pay twice the price!!!

        • +1

Ass end of the world tax

        • +6

I prefer the "nicest beaches in the world" tax.

      • I got a Acer Aspire REVO on eBay from Hong Kong. Best media centre I have ever had with Ubuntu/XBMC etc. Low energy consumption and sits on the back of the TV and does full HD no problem. $250 AUD and 2 years later, still doing great!

    • The xtreamer ultra looks like a great option, I was going to build a little HTPC with a couple of tv tuners and to take care of things like iview and other catchup services that my current media player can't handle (Astone 360t) but I think I will preorder this.

  • Look around these identical machines can found for around $80, I bought a couple.

    • +1

I am assuming you mean eBay right? They would not come 12 month with warranty though.

Having gone down the HTPC myself in the past, I would not bother again as there are much easier options these days like WD Live media player or similar. Still this would be good as a 2nd PC or for the kids to play around on.

      • I use a PC of similar vintage (a USFF c2d 1.86, 2GB RAM) as a HTPC running Windows 7's Media Center. It's absolutely the best DVR you can get. The interface beats Tivo hands-down, and you can also set it up to automatically convert all your recordings to H264 once they're e.g. a week old. It'll also play absolutely any video you throw at it, as it's a regular PC too. Plus you can surf the net on your 50" TV if you wanna show people stuff.

And contrary to what some people say, Windows 7 is incredibly low-maintenance. I have done absolutely no maintenance on mine since I set it up - it just keeps working happily. I also stream Hulu on it (via a vpn)… the Hulu desktop app natively supports the classic microsoft media center remote, so that makes it work pretty well.

I've set up similar systems for several less-computer-inclined friends and have had no problems at all. Media Center really changes the way you watch TV just like Tivo, but with a much more elegant interface and much greater flexibility.

  • i am running the dc7600 as a media centre with tuner cards, hdmi video & audio, have 5 of these running and they are older 4+ years old.

i bought a dc7600 through express pcparts for a friends media centre almost 2 years ago, 4 gb ram, 1 tb hdd, recently upgraded it with hdmi video & audio 7.1, works a treat.

the dc7700 is a good pc for use as a media centre.

  • Actually I found them locally, couldn't justify postage on one of these. They're always available as are always being decommissioned from workplaces, solid machines but definitely wouldn't pay $150, as far as an HTPC stick to wdtvs.

  • Keep in mind if you're looking for a HTPC this will suck more juice than say an Intel Atom or Nvidia ION based HTPC (not to mention the form factor is much bigger), especially if you intend for this to be a 24/7 media server. I'm not sure if the extra price of one of these systems would justify your total overall savings but you can't deny that electricity prices are only going up! :)

  • do these come with the recover cd?

  • For those who got one of these, they are fine for HTPC's. They run Windows 7 pretty well, we got rid of 180 of these at their end of lease. They'll take a low profile card no worries and come with an ATI card, x1300 I think. I've got a DC7800 with 3 x 2tb drives in it for a WHS.
