    Need an ABN..
    Bugger.
I actually logged in to find a Domain deal for my wedding Blog..

    • congratulations on the wedding and yes bugger on the ABN

    • It's very easy to get an ABN.

    • It would be easier to get a .org or .com for a wedding blog. Why would you want a .com.au for that?

.com.au names usually indicate a product, service, company or organisation.

  • If I have an idea for a business/service…but it's just an idea currently, can I apply for an ABN and get this deal?

    • Yes. Anyone can get an ABN.

      • Well, not according to the Application website:
"An intention to operate a business is not sufficient to be seen as establishing an enterprise; you must have taken appropriate steps that show a commitment to starting a business. "

Just as an FYI: domains are crazy cheap, and decent hosting plans will let you host multiple sites/users without issue. I've got a couple of domains and I share my hosting plan with a couple of friends - all running full websites/services.

If you can buy the domain from a legit reseller, you also won't be locked into their T&C's, allowing you to move/modify/alter any domain settings as you see fit.

eg. A friend purchased a packaged website that came with a domain name, but he wanted to use Google Apps for their mail - he was unable to change any of the domain name settings as the reseller didn't allow it.

Hope this info helps someone out. =)

    • CORRECT! …and you're not locked-in to the proprietary MYOB Atlas content management system. Also - check the fine print. After the first year, businesses that take up the offer will need to pay $5 a month to maintain their website with MYOB's Atlas service.

  • when registering a domain you only need to supply an ABN. It doesn't necessarily have to be yours. "Legally" speaking, the company or organisation owns the domain, not the individual. So if you have a nice friend who has an ABN you could use that. I used to work for a domain registrar so im happy to answer any questions about .au domain registration that you might have.

    • Ow ok, nice to have you here then :)

Question 1: What's the deal with:

      All .au domains must:
      * be an exact match of the name registered to the ABN/ACN/RBN,
      * be an abbreviation of the name registered to the ABN/ACN/RBN, or
      * be a product or service offered by the ABN/ACN/RBN owner.

So for example my biz is in IT industry but under my name, I can have my domain as IT-great.com.au (for instance)?

      Question 2:

We can renew or transfer the domain with different company which we registered it initially right?

      Thanks.

      • Question 1:

The .au domain you register must be similar to your business in some way. It must represent it. You cant have pizza.com.au if you sell chairs. Unless they are pizza themed chairs. The definition is very loose. Simply put, you are unlikely to get caught unless someone who wants your domain reports you to AUDA (Australian Domain Authority). Just to be sure make sure your domain has some connection to your business. If your business is regsitered as John Smith but you carry out computer repairs, then you could certainly have it-great.com.au (for instance).

        Question 2:

You are free to transfer your domain to another registrar of your choice. Registrars are the companies that take your money and register the domain for you. There may be charges involved to do so, but they are determined by your new registrar. There are polices and rules surrounding domain transfers, and your current registrar can not prevent you from moving your domain to a competitor. So if you find some dirt cheap domain, but want to transfer it to another company that you trust more, you are free to do so. If you have any problems with a transfer contact AUDA.

  • But do you OWN/CONTROL the domain? Read the TnCs… doesnt seem like it. If you leave, MYOB wont let you transfer away your domain

    • Well technically it doesnt matter where you register the domain. You never "own" it, you just hold the right to use it.

MYOB uses Melbourne IT as its domain registrar. They are merely a Reseller. You can contact Melbourne IT if you have any problems and they can assist you with "releasing" the domain name from MYOB.

You can also "go direct" with Melbourne IT at any time. http://www.melbourneit.com.au/godirect/

Even if MYOB dont co-operate, you can send a form to Melbourne IT and they will send you the required codes to release the domain name.

  • I think it should be alrite to transfer:

If you chose to cancel your MYOB Atlas website service, your .com.au domain name will remain under our management until you elect to transfer it to the management of another auDA-accredited registrar (at no charge to you).

    3.2 .au domain name registrations

    (b) You are entitled to transfer your domain name registration to another registrar, and we will facilitate such transfer for you according to our obligations under auDA's published policies (see http://www.auda.org.au).

    (c) You are bound by the .au Dispute Resolution Policy (auDRP) in relation to your registered domain name, as well as such other dispute resolution policy which may be adopted by auDA from time to time.

    (d) Renewal of your .au domain name licence is your responsibility. If you choose not to renew your .au domain name, your website's address will revert to the myob.net domain name supplied during signup for MYOB Atlas.

    • Yeah they really cant stop you. Provided the domain is registered to your ABN, they cant stop you taking it anywhere else.

  • has anyone had any success with registering their free domain yet, having it direct to thier myob site? mine doesnt seem to be coming up in the "purchased domains section". no word yet from support either. wish there was an easy way to change the nameservers so I could use my own hosting space.

  • My new domain is up and running (instantly) after registering. I did send an email to them to have the nameservers changed to hosting company. No answer til now though.
