One for the tinkerers - you can turn this into an Android tablet with some mild hacking and the specs are very good for the money.

Just choose "check out as guest" on the eBay link after clicking "Buy It Now",
Enter your US forwarder address (comgateway etc)
Enter the coupon code CBARNESDD and pay with your normal AU paypal account.

UPDATE
if you followed my instructions about buying on an eBay guest account, you may get an email from eBay saying they cancelled your order. DONT PANIC. I got this message, and the PayPal payment had gone through, and the item is now marked as shipped with online tracking in my PayPal account. Seems eBay are just screwing themselves out of their final value fee by cancelling their initial part in the order process. Makes a change.

no doubt people have a lot of nooks to get rid of as a result of this bargain:

That was an awesome bargain by the way.

what i meant was this one

        • It's not people who have a lot of nooks to get rid of. This offer is from Barnes and Noble direct. The $50 off is only valid until the 3/3/2011.

I have been eyeing off a Nook Color for a while now and this was incentive to jump on board.

Bought one when was in US few weeks ago after seeing the videos of it running Froyo and Honeycomb. Thought USD250 was great price for what it offered. This is even better.

    This is a useful site - http://nookdevs.com/Portal:NookColor

  • Bought one for $199 just now. Was looking for a basic reader with decent PDF abilities for a while. Bonus that one can install Android 3.0 on it as well.

  • Anyone had any luck with a good US forwarder?

    • check the thread on whirpool forum.

not a bad price, just note this one uses a LCD screen, instead of E-ink, not good for long time reading. Waiting for color eReader using E-ink

    • Its an IPS LCD though, so it has excellent viewing angles and 1024x600 resolution. So its good when hacked into a cheap Android tablet, but I agree, E-Ink is where its at for dedicated eReader.

This is far better than the capacitive touchscreen Android tablet offerings with their dodgy as DSP+CPU speeds of 800+MHz. This has a proper TI SOC @800MHz and 512MB RAM, 8GB internal with microSD slot. All really good stuff in its own right, and especially so for this kind of money.

    • Arguably eReaders are not the purpose of an Android tablet/iPad anyway.
Having said that, I use my Galaxy S as an eReader on the way to work and in "Night Mode" (white text on a black background), I find it a pretty decent experience.. (Conveniently, for the AMOLED screen, it's more battery efficient to boot, not so for an LCD)
Of course, I only read for 30 minutes or so at a time, so over a longer, more casual read, eye strain may become an issue, from the "looking into a torch" effect of staring at a backlight.

Nook Colour is by far the best bang for buck tablet currently available..
It has a very active developer community which is important for Android devices as manufacturers have historically tended to drop (or significantly reduce) support for their older units as soon as they release a newer model.
      I'm VERY tempted!

  • As a side bonus, the Nook Color works with my local library's ebook catalogue out of the box - search for yours here - http://search.overdrive.com/

  • Been tempted by this tablet for awhile now. I might wait for tomorrow's iPad 2 announcement…

But $250 for a Honeycomb capable tablet is a bargain!

  • Really good business Idea here making the device really cheap and probably only making a small margin on it but they will kill it when users buy books etc.

  • I just bought one and forwarded it to comGateway. I paid with my Paypal. How do I find the invoice number? I only see Transaction ID and Item number on my paypal receipt.

    • I'm pretty sure your suite number is unique to your account. So they will automatically know if anything arrives for you and will notify you, at least, thats what happened when I ordered from them a last year.

      • I've not used a forwarder before, is comGateweay the recommended service?

        • I use comgateway. The service is excellent and the goods arrive very quickly. My Nexus one got here in a week, this is including the time it took to get the comgateway then get on forwarded.

  • For those who've ordered, which forwarded did you use and how much was shipping?

    • Comgateway comes to about $38.

  • bah to get or not to get =[

  • Gosh, since I ordered 14 hours ago the listed ebay seller (BN) sold 1500+ more units. Seems to be a decent deal.

    • Wow, over 8000 sold. Was at 5000 when I posted this deal and bought mine, 3000 when I first saw it show up in the Android news feed a few hours before that. I wonder how many are left?

EDIT: just checked my watch list…
      3927 left.

      • 3628 left now. Thats one sold every 30 seconds, and its the middle of the night in the States (where these are only supposed to be sold to)

        • The frenzy is still going. 10.000+ units sold now. Got my shipping tracking# in the meantime. They seem able to cope w/ demand.

        • not really. a lot of ppl are getting notices that their order has been cancelled

        • Seems eBay are just cancelling their part of the order, in the background the order is continuing to go through via PayPal, so we should all still get our nooks, its just eBay being eBay. I've updated the OP.

  • is comgateway the best forwarding company? price and reliability wise? also which courier do they use?

  • Good deal

Every time I click refresh another 20 NOOKs are gone.
    These are going quick.

  • So theres a limited amount of these being sold on ebay or they are just taking orders until 3rd March deadline is met?

  • I see watch it on ebay and tells of exact numbers left.

  • Is there a new Nook on the way?

    • This is the new nook, its only been out a few months.

  • one question, how do you compare this with a Telstra Tablet?
    It's $279 at the moment.

    • +2

The nook blows it out of the water. Better screen (capacitative vs resistive), faster processor, better build quality and most importantly XDA mod support which means its going to get Honeycomb and possible beyond.

Absolutely no comparision…and its cheaper too :)

      • +1

And it has a top of the line IPS LCD which is 1024 x 600, as compared to 800x488 on T-tab >.<

        • the only advatage the t-tab has is 3g. still not worth getting. the nook beats it hands down. look at the vids on youtube.

    • Thanks guys!

  • i think B&N make their money off the books they sell and not the nook. that why they are giving them away at dirt cheap prices.

  • what about this one from 1-day? http://www.1-day.com.au/products/AAAEFN17T

    • LOL I like the bit that says "Automatic shutdown" is a feature.

  • Argghhhhh I missed this! What a great deal!

    US$238 delivered for a NookColor!

    sigh

  • Mine just showed up at hopshopgo shipping forwarder (same company as comgateway), $33.50 for standard DHL delivery to Melbourne. Pretty stoked, USD $232.50 all up.

  • how does this compare with the amazon kindle 3?

    • If you are only ever going to be reading eBooks on it, go the kindle (or original NOOK) or any E-ink screen device really. There is no comparison to E-ink for reading.

If you want to do more than just read on it, get the NOOK color. It has a top of the range high resolution IPS LCD screen, and enough grunt under the hood to do pretty much anything available right now.

  • I want one now ;) any more cheap deals ;)
