Was looking for an SSD for an external case as i've killed a few HDD from shaking in my man bag whilst running for the train.

These are surprisingly cheap and have awesome reviews on amazon and feedback on store link with a few screenshots from crystaldiskmark from users.

There is feedback from someone on store who ordered a 360Gb but real measured capacity was only 335Gb.. i found an explanation on one of the amazon reviews and someone had explained that there is "24gb of reserved Z sector" where if a bad sector error is detected it is moved immediately into the reserved area.

    So it's $90.48 US / $126.25 AU inc. GST for the 512GB.

KingSpec are a very good budget brand of SSDs and have been around forever! The blue and orange are sexy af too :) I have two KingSpec 2242 M.2 SSDs (128GB & 256GB) in my laptop and they've been going strong for 18 months now.

    • Thanks.. good to know! this is the first one i've purchased.. not msata though.. got nervous initially because i watched a review on youtube with the 512gb msata installed in GPD mini pc

I have had a couple of the 256gb ones for a few months with no issues. Would buy again.

  • with the whole external SSD thing does it mean we can simply chuck them into an SSD enclosure and then you have a shock/drop proof HDD?

    • Yes just get a 2.5" enclosure and whack it in

    • +1

Yes, but you'd want a SATA3 case (most ebauy ones are SATA2) to get the full ~500Mb r/w speed.

Cheapest one I could find on Ali with the most orders is:
      https://www.aliexpress.com/item/2016-Zheino-2-5-sata-USB-3-0…

      • Ensure the enclosure has UASP controller or the drive will perform like a thumbdrive and avoid most of the advantages of using an SSD on USB 3.

        It doesn't cost much.

  • Thanks OP tempted to get this to replace an ailing HDD, but not sure I trust it given some of the reliability issues reported in reviews on Amazon

edit: I feel like I should say the 'few' reliability issues. As most of the reviews seem positive and the price is great.

Amazon is awash with fake reviews.

Looks like the 512GB and 1TB isn't much of a deal at all, if you can get MX500 for same price and EVO 860 for $15 more… Why would you go for a no name Chinese brand when the other SSD have FIVE YEARS WARRANTY from well known brands?

    • OzBargain.. Enough said.

      • +1

But why? Even if right now isn't lowest, MX500 1TB is $260 from Shopping Express Clearance with Pixel, or MX500 250Gb for $76 from PCByte with Penny5. The difference is minimal and these are Aus stock so you get them delivered much faster. By the time Aliexpress SSD arrive there could have been another SSD war on Ebay which push Aus Stock MX500 or EVO 860 lower again.

        • +1

I personally don't understand it. I prefer to spend a little extra and deal with local warranty.

        • +3

Tightarses, that's why. They will choose worse quality stuff to save literally a few bucks. Like the 2% eBay cash reward thing a few days ago. People went crazy over it. Wtf is 2%.

        • @ufsta: Or like driving 50 km to save 2c on petrol.

        • I concur. I'd rather spend ~$2 more and be sure my butterfly collection won't fly away while I'm asleep

  • Anyone that buys a MicroSD card from AliExpress deserves to be sold a fake

    • +3

This isn't a deal on micro SD cards. You're in the wrong deal.

TLDW: Its trash and avoid it

    • Yep I bought one and got caught out too!

Any thoughts on this additional ……. PROBLEM –

CAN’T GET KINGSPEC 512GB SSD TO WORK LIKE SAMSUNG 860 EVO SSD IN EXTERNAL USB3 CASE. CAN’T PLAY MOVIE (mp4) ON TV.

      SET UP-

I have 2 identical usb3 external 2.5inch cases. <ORICO 2.5" 2139U3 Transparent SATA HDD Mobile Hard Disk Drive Enclosure USB 3.0>

      I have 2 new SSD
      1. KingSpec SSD 512GB 2.5" SATA3 P/N P3-512
      2. Samsung 860 EVO SSD 1TB.

      • Both SSD have the same format and can be seen on the computer “Disk Management”.
      • I have loaded the same video (MP4) and music (MP3) onto both SSD.
      • The computer can play both video (MP4) and music (MP3) from both KingSpec and Samsung SSD.

On the TV (connected via USB3)
      1. The Samsung SSD will play both video (MP4) and music (MP3).
      2. The KingSpec will NOT play video (MP4) or music (MP3).
      a. The TV reports Kingspec SSD with “No movie files on current device. Select another category.”

PROBLEM SOLVING TODATE – THAT DIDN’T WORK
      1. I have tried swapping the SSDs in the external cases.
      2. I have tried swapping the cables in the external cases.
      3. I have tried swapping the SSDs in the external cases to different usb ports on the TV.
      4. I have tried cloning the SSDs content to ensure exact copy.
