what can i see with this? the moon?

    • +4

yeah.. assuming the stand is OK. thats normally the big let down

these scopes are good for kids but i wouldn't buy one myself - I have a 10" Dobsonian and a Nextstar 4SE scope and these toy scopes are bad for the hobby. they turn people off as they are that bad,

for a first scope, I'd recommend something like this - yes i know it's 20X the price of this one but it's worth it.

      • I have an 8 each celestron on go to mount with star tracking etc.. but its a pain to take out.

      • Anything cheaper u can recommend?

      • I agree with the sentiment, but I don't think these tiny scopes are quite as bad as you make it sound. I purchased something similar ($30 refractor) and whilst the stand was terrible and frustrating to use, the optics were good enough that I got a taste. I knew I needed more. After much deliberation, I ended up buying an 8" Dobsonian (which i love to bits). I could NEVER have purchased my dobsonian without buying a dirt-cheap rubbish telescope to test the waters. It would be unfortunate to see beginners deterred from the hobby because they are told the only way to start is with a $400, 30kg telescope.
Dobsonians are great scopes for amateurs.
Little refractors are good for curious beginners.

For reference, this is the little toy telescope I purchased initially:

    • Probably rubbish.

This was recommended by the folks at ozscopes as a good entry level for kids

  • Very good item at this price it’s really fantastic deal and a great buy.

Stop saying rubbish that it’s for kids, it’s a normal telescope, don’t expect miracles at this price point.

It will be great for you if you have some view, people trashing this must be angry because they live in the basement.

    • Not sure how insulting other OZBargainers helps prove your point.

The telescope is rubbish. You should not expect much with the crappy optics like this. And with a wobbly mount like this. You will see a slightly magnified but blurry moon, the planets will be at best a blurry dots. The magnification and telescope aperture is too small for that anyway. And unless you have very dark skies the nebulae will be invisible.

The rubbish like this will turn people off astronomy forever.

Having said that, it is cheap and 4-year olds have low standards.

  • People complaining because it can’t see the hairs on the ass of an alien on the moons of Jupiter…

$17 is nuts for a working telescope especially if for your kids. Man who knows that $17 might ignite a passion in astronomy that sees them becoming an astronaut. $17 for your kids to be an astronaut that’s a bargain guys…!

    • On the contrary, the problem with cheap telescopes like this is that the view is so crap that it will turn people off from astronomy forever. It will definitely not ignite a passion in astronomy.

Having said that, the price point is extremely good and 4 year olds have low standards. Anybody older and you are wasting $17, although they can always play with it without looking through it.

      • Can u recommend something abit better that will interest the young n old?
