Lowest price this card has been so far, and for the top of the range its great value when you consider the Nvidia GTX580's go for around $600 but are only 15% faster.

If you guys upgrading and if you have mid-tower case then make sure this card will fit in to your case. other wise u will need to buy new case too. length of this card is 27.9 cm.
Most cases have around 270-300mm of room, but yeah, good point :)
Crysis 2 here I come!
Is this comparable to the GTX 570 in performance and price?
Yes it is but the HD6970 it uses less power.
Actually the GTX570 uses less power, roughly 14% difference (from a few google searches).
The GTX570 uses about 75W more than the 6970 during a stress test such as Furmark. Under a normal gaming load then they're pretty much equal.
i Believe its actually a little more powerful, more so at higher resolutions. Its only around 12-15% slower then a GTX580.
Same comment per previous 6970 deal, buy 6950 @ ~$320, flash 6970 bios, save!
I have checked on this just a moment ago. I have got most components ready but shame that the fixed sandybridge motherboard is not yet available. MSY scared me in by claiming that the respective mb company have not issued any statements and they may not replaced the current board for me if I could not prove any fault while running it.
Flashing the bios seems to be simple enough but one overclocker claims the wattage is lower on the modded 6950. Will that result in instability when running at an overclock rate?
I'm gonna jump in here and say, YES it will give you problems in the long run, the 6970 has an 8 pin and a 6 pin, and requires more Watts to run stable for its cores and speeds. Unlike the 6950 which has 2x 6pin plugs, it uses less watts. You flash the bios and run it at speeds and unlock the cores to run like a 6970, you will eventually or maybe even instantly crash the card depending on a.) your power supply and b.) how much process's it runs and how stressed out it gets, you'll most likely see a-lot of restarts and BSOD's regarding the shortages/brownouts(hardware problem) etc due to instability.
id get a 6970 to be on the safe side, if you go the 6950 way, and screw your card up - not anyones fault but yours for going the cheap way, and you'll end up spending more.
I may just mod the standard bios to increase the amount of shaders instead. Was going to get the GTX570 but now considering the 6950. Is this AMD tactic?
That's just speculation not fact. The truth is that no one knows what damage if any the card will sustain after a long period of time. The safest way to reach 6970 speeds on a 6950 is to simply mod your original BIOS so that you have unlocked shaders and then simply overclock the core and memory to 880/1375. The majority of 6950's will be capable of this without any issues. Of course there are always going to be a couple that will produce artifacting right off the bat but that's to be expected.
Doesn't always work. Got an XFX HD 6950 from PCG about a month ago and tried to flash it with the 6970 BIOS, used the XFX, ASUS, Sapphire and Gigabyte BIOSes, but they all caused rendering errors in games, where the logical left edge of the screen would physically start from the middle of the screen (so the screen is in two halves, the right side is the left side and the left side continues on the right side). I have the version 1.1 of the card.
Yeah I wouldn't buy a 6970, get a 6950 and unlock it.
Mmmmm VTX never heard of the brand before
Me either but all the cards are the same, just with different coolers and graphics.
VTX3D is Powercolor.
ok…
Why wouldn't you buy it? The only card faster than a 6970 is the GTX580 and it costs almost double the amount.
I bought it over the GTX570 because of the price and because of its 2GB VRAM. I am running this with my newly acquired Dell 30" at Max resolution. I believe the 2GB is better than 1GB in my situation and have more storage space for texture and shaders.
Nub? You're the one talking out of your arse. Obvious Nvidia fanboy is obvious. And if you're referring to crossfire/SLI, there's not much that you can get performance wise for under $400 and on top of that a single card set up is much better than a dual card set up if the performance is similar.
Oh yes I'm a nvidia fanboy using an ati(amd) card. Nice work.
I don't get it. Can you elaborate on your first comment? Why wouldn't you buy it? We all know the GTX580 is the best video card on the market today but at $600 it's not good value for money.
Everyone's needs/wants differ. Bliind's first comment implies he's a power user, only after the best gfx card avail, not concerned about $$$.
6970 is a brilliant single card solution, but you can get more graphical grunt out of other solutions… I haven't kept up with the latest so please correct me if I'm wrong, but I think a 5970 (2x underclocked 5870 sandwiched together) outperforms the 6970 at higher res and greater AA levels… even the 4870x2 wasn't too far behind. And then if you crossfire them…
I went from 4870x2 to 6970 (flashed 6950), negligible upgrade in terms of performance, but a heck of a lot cooler (and hence quieter)!
Went to MSY Box Hill today and got the HIS 6950 as it has no report of artifacts etc. BTW MSY Box Hill will close permanently on the 7th of March as I was told. They have recently opened a store in Mitcham. I believe the PCDIY next door to them did some damage to their business.
So do i need 2 of these graphic cards to enable crossfireX? or if i just buy this one graphic card crossfireX can someone help me please im not really good with computers ><
Yes you do need 2. Crossfire is Amd's (Ati) naming for connecting more than one card together.
So i wouldn't be able to be using crossfireX with this graphic card if i only bought 1 of it ?
coressfireX is another word for using two or more video cards at once, it doesn't do anything special.
Your basically asking if you can use two video cards at once if you only have one video card, the answer obviously is no :-)
Crossfire = To have two videocards pluged in…
It sounds allot better to call having two videocard plugged in and linked together something cool like
Crossfire… then to just call it " two cards connected "
Its a marketing thing.. Nvidia do the same thing but they call it SLI again .. " two cards connected " haha its funny how something so simple can be made complex.
Can i run three monitors simulatneously with this card, or would i need a second one?
You can run 4 monitors off this card at once if you'd like. The third or forth monitor needs a mini display port but you can buy DVI>DP adapters then hook that up to a mini DP adapter.
From my experience in the corporate world, DVI-DisplayPort adapters suck a big one. Yes maybe in the gaming world with better quality hardware they may be better, but I've removed every one of them, as 80-90% of them fail.
You only need 1 card but if you don't have a monitor with a display port you will have to get 1 Display Port to DVI Adapter for one of the monitors.
Can someone point me in the direction of a 6950 to 6970 flash instruction… thing?
Crossfire 6970 will pretty much match GTX580 SLI as well, but costs like half :)
