Citizen Promaster Blue Angels Special Editions

The Blue Angels are the US Navy's elite flight demonstration squadron renowned for their precision and grace showcased in each of their flight manoeuvres. This precision and grace is exhibited in the Citizen Blue Angels Nighthawk with a navy blue ion-plated stainless steel case. They have slide rule bezels which are operated using the crown at the 8 o'clock position, for those times when you need to get mathematical. Both these exquisite horological masterpieces are fitted with Calibre B877, for which Citizen has published Setting Instructions and Slide Rule Instructions.

I had a Nighthawk and I'm pretty sure the diameter is only 42mm diameter. This size is advertised by multiple sources. I suggest the 44.2mm is including the crown. Non the less, this is a fantastic watch that garners a lot of attention. It is rock solid and very versatile - 200m WR, screw down crown, GMT etc. The short lug to lug, approx 46mm, makes this watch suitable for some smaller sized wrists too.

Thanks for the feedback. It's a great classic watch.

    • Just confirming is this one GMT as well it looks like it has GMT hands but I couldn't find it in the product description?

I'm assuming the 12/24hr time is referencing one time zone but not sure!

      • Definitely has a GMT hand. The hand with the plane on the end is the GMT hand!

        • Correct. It's the most discrete part of the whole watch.

        • +1

          Beauty thanks MathNerd

        • @Peel: Also, for your information, it's a "dual-layer GMT", so both ends of the GMT hand have a plane on it, one is yellow and the other white. So rather than having 360 degrees of GMT labels, it's got only 180 degrees and reads well. I've got the watch on my wrist now and it's an absolute beauty.

        • Oooh cool I cant wait to give it a whirl.

  • +5

Always get the metal bracelet version of a watch if available.

    • Agreed. It's thick with solid end links. The clasp is OK with a safety lock and micro adjustments, but not amazing.

    • But the leather one looks cool and is $100 cheaper

      • But doesn't that defeat the purpose of a divers watch?

        • +3

Do people actually take these diving?

        • Nato or rubber. No drilled lugs though and the solid links are a bit fiddly to seat.

        • +1

@Circly: It says in the manual that it's not for scuba - not ISO rated. But the crown is screw down. I took mine in the ocean tonnes of times.

        • +1

          This isn't a dive watch, it's a pilots watch.

Great price on the Citizen Eco-Drive Promaster Nighthawk Blue Angels BJ7006-56L. Shiels have it for $599.

    • +1

Thanks PJC. I might include a price comparison in the OP if I can find enough comparisons to list.

      • +1

It was recently ~$300 delivered from Jomashop (with codes) on the leather too.

  • +1

I wonder how many people who own the Nighthawk know how to use the e6bx interface ;D

    • For sure. A bit like my 600m WR diver and chronos. Just use a phone.

    • I learnt just because I purchased a nighthawk. But never used it.

  • Oh it's tempting, but I'm going to hang out for sapphire crystal, I think.

    • +1

I can't think of a watch in this price range with this unique design that has a sapphire crystal. I had mine for a few years without any scratches. Some people have fitted a sapphire crystal.

      • +2

After everyday hard wearing use for 6 years. Mines covered in scratches. But I still get compliments.

      • Do you know what type of cost to fit a Saphire crystal?

        • +1

I'm sure there are many that fit, you just need the correct diameter and no dome. But here is one on ebay.. Fitment prices will vary.

        • +1

I had a domed sapphire fitted to my SRP777. Fitting cost me $25.
          Crystal itself cost me ~$40

      • You're not wrong, but this particular special edition isn't really doing it for me. I had a search and most of the stuff about replacement crystals dates from around 2014 and is hard to find.

I don't mind paying a bit more, so I think I'll hold out. Thanks for telling me about replacement crystals though.

  • Is anyone familiar with the strap version?

I've read reviews on 2 different retailers saying that
    a) Strap colour is not as aesthetically please as is quite a pale blue (vs what's pictured)
    b) Strap isn't durable and prone to fraying

    • +1

      Just get the steel.

    • +1

Get the metal strap version, quite easy to change to a good looking sport/leather strap cheaply but hard to find a quality metal strap like this for under $100

  • Interested in the normal version… Blue Angels doesn't do it for me.

  • Anyone know where to buy a quality, stylish, lightweight rubber/silicones watch band for these kind of watches, probably 22mm.

    • Silicone is cheap, but a dust magnet. There are many for $2 on Aliexpress, but the buckles are tird.

I would get a 22mm navy blue Isofrane style from Borealis. The quality is very high for the price. They are the same as the one from Toxic Natos which is held in high regard.

  • +2

Got one. Thanks OP. And all other fellow bargainers as well for detailing every bit about the watch :)

By the power vested in me it is my solemn duty to hereby absolve you of all blame and any residual guilt concerning the essential acquisition of this Promaster Nighthawk Blue Angels horological masterpiece.

  • Price is $499 and $450 for me … no deal anymore?
    Oops … code needed

  • +1

    That is handsome

    :'D

  • Is this a budget navitimer?

    • Not a chrono, but I think a Navi or Flightmaster has more useless crap stuffed onto the dial.

  • +1

I LOVE my Eco-Drive Promaster Nighthawk Euro that I got on the recent deal. However, I only paid AUD$185 delivered for that. This is quite a premium for the Blue Angels editions (it does look stunning though).

  • I got one of these in 2003 and the battery died 3 years ago so it did pretty good.

    • +2

      Did u change the battery?

  • +3

Why do you guys do this to me?

    • +4

If it had sapphire! No deal :(

  • The Steel-Bracelet one is out of stock.

Original Nighthawk has been my daily wearer since 2012 purchase in USA. I've bought a few watches since but I keep going back to my fave. Very durable, links and watch catches all still solid, very few scratches. Love that watch .. :-) . !!
