I sent them an enquiry yesterday asking why it was more than 10% stating that probably wasn't legal. No response yet ;)

Note they call it import duty. If they called it something else it'd probably be legal to charge more. Either way it's a scumbag practice to charge more than 10%.

        Gerry Harvey gets a cut.

      • there's probably a 1% paperwork surcharge, thanks Malcolm, thanks ScoMo.

    • It's good to know but it's still cheaper than eBay for $ 746.99

  • Isn't this AUD$599 direct from Oculus? Just without the game?

    • Yes, 599 direct from Oculus website but without the new Marvel game - their bundle is Lucky's Tale, Medium, Toybox, Quill, Dead and Buried, Dragon Front, and Robo Recall.

Beware, Oculus is pretty snooty about overseas imports when it comes to warranty.

    • Better to go with HTC Vive?

      • Just going off the Forums Oculus are a vastly better warranty wise these days, Vive seem to have lost the plot, hit up the reddit forums and have a bit of a browse.
Disclaimer I have a Rift and GO and have so far not required warranty service.

    • As long as purchased from Oculus people don't seem to have many issues, it was one of the reasons I bought from them.

  • damn this is why platform exclusives are stupid. whynot make it a mixed reality VR compatible as well

    • How to play Oculus Rift on HTC Vive

Test it out with the cheapest games, then you could potentially play Oculus entire Catalog. Seeing as they have better exclusives, it might be a good idea for HTC Vive users.

  • Any one bought one of these recently and have any feedback? :)

If you want rift specific feedback, check forums. It's now close to 3yr old tech, but it's still a great system.

If you want newegg feedback, idk.

I Bought the vive last year, due to the theoretically better tech support, I have friends with WMR, and work/steam colleagues with the early Rift HW.

I used it solidly for 2 months, and not so much afterwards. I don't have much in the way of free time, or social pressure to play VR games, which is a bit of a pity, but I bought a dozen+ games and have fun with it. I also bought 50+ steam sale games for Vr I haven't tried

I did not set up a full room scale setup, so YMMV. Having a VR room /living room set up is a whole different thing.

ATM, I don't have the budget for a GTX 1080/ti to enable 2x SuperSampling for better image quality (the Oculus Rift has better/different SS, sic), Though, I will think about the RTX 2080 once the hype has died, or the price drops below $1000, sic.

VR is definitely usable, but it is tech dependent, and still in the early stages. At the moment, you need 90fps 1440p graphics, which is the gtx 1060/970 / amd 570 as a kind of minimum.

Technically, the vive /rift is close to 1080p, but it renders games/VR at close to 1440p, then scales to each eye. You also get a narrow view range which makes things feel… Like wearing goggles. Because you are.

the "optimal" VR is around 5k resolution, which is phenomenally more expensive and difficult by an order of magnitude… Because you basically need a 8k HDR OLED display the size of a small mobile phone display, running at 90 to 120fps.

Tech Shortcuts are needed, and it's getting a lot better over time with small incremental updates and optimisation. There are 3k,4k and 5k headsets coming, but don't expect too much, or too soon.

The ps4 VR is probably the most user friendly version that doesn't need a $500+ GPU to run, along with the latest hardware.

      • Thanks for the detailed response mate! I've got a GTX 1080 and an i7 6700k so I should be alright specs wise but your write-up has me very intrigued/tempted.

Just worried I'll jump on the Rift and then they'll do another price drop as the new model comes out or something like that. I really like the idea of it, I played around a bit with Google Cardboard and Samsung Gear VR a couple of years back and loved the concept.
