Can confirm my 16gb is now 17gb 😁

  • +10

15months ago I started at 10gb/month with Kogan and wondered how I'd ever use it all. Now up to 17gb - I'm glad Kogan has handed opened up additional data for free!

    • +2

Yep been with them 10 days shy of one year. Supposed to start at 10Gb for the month. First day was upgraded to 11GB, then two months later it was 16, now 17GB. All for no extra cost. Absolutely no complaints about Kogan. As good as any other networks I've been with (Telstra, Optus, 3 and Vodafone) if not better.

  • What kind of speeds do you get on Kogan compared to Telstra? I'm thinking of switching over.

    • +3

Just did a speed test on the bus, getting around 42mb download and 18mb upload (Ookla speed test app)

      • -2

Are you sure you're not on wi-fi?! I'm getting 5 Mbps with Telstra…

        • There's a few factors that will affect your speed. Telstra is only really good for network coverage imo. I was getting some pretty awesome speeds last time I checked on Kogan mobile (Vodaphone network). 200mbps down 40mbps upload at Glen Waverley station.

        • I've also seen around 200mbps down on Telstra 4G

        • I just got 95.3/49.2 on Telstra and often get mid 100's. It really depends on where you are and the amount of network congestion.

        • @greennick: I get over 100mbps up to around 170mbps at work, then at home 1km away I get 15mbps

        • @Conye:

Can't seem to get more than 10 Mbps on Telstra (4G) regardless of where I am. Very frustrating. Does it matter that my phone is an overseas model, i.e. not bought in Australia?

        • @Conye: I find it weird at home. I get really high data transfer, but my home seems to be in a bit of a deadspot and sometimes the reception goes to shit.

        • @MrZ: Could be that your phone can't do LTE? Which is Telstra's standard for high speed data transfer. Or maybe you don't have access to the frequencies the faster parts of the network are running on?

        • @MrZ: Yes, could make all the difference in the world, depending on what it is.

        • -1

          @CYMA:

I very much doubt you see 200mbps on Kogan. Pics or it didn't happen.

Before I ported from Telstra to Kogan today I did some tests, here were the results:

          Telstra
          Downspeed – 230mbps
          Upspeed – 40.7mbps

          Kogan
          Downspeed – 64.6mbps
          Upspeed – 19.3mbps

Same phone, exact same location, about 14 minutes apart.

        • @Provingwrong:

Good to know. Guess I just can't get that in my city.

        • @Stugots: here's what I get on Lebara who also use the Vodafone network

          http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/a/4220257616

    • I get nearly 70 Mbps on Kogan.

    • +6

Just now. 228mbps DL and 56mbps UL. Lower Templestowe, Melbourne.

    • Just got 7.85Mbps/2.07Mbps on Kogan using Samsung S7. I'm in Canberra Civic.

Realised it was unrealistic of me to test on first floor of a high rise. Retested on my way to get coffee and I now get 22.8Mbps/5.16Mbps

    • 61Mbps down and 38Mbps up. Parramatta near westfield

    • The speeds aren't as great (still more than usable for mobile phone purposes) as telstra and reception could be an issue if you live in the country but apart from that if you live in a city you should have no issues.

    • Kogan Mobile runs on Vodafone 4G. I get great speeds with it in Broken Hill. Phenomenal value!

    • 94 down 13 up. Cherrybrook NSW inside a double brick house.

    • I changed over to Kogan last month on this exact same plan mentioned, just did a speed test and got 89DL and 11UL. West Ryde, Sydney

Can confirm being on a Kogan yearly plan is the first time as a mobile customer I haven’t felt like I’ve been taken advantage of 10/10

    • +8

Same. My data has been upgraded like 4 times in the almost 2 years i've been with them. I started with like, 8GB i think. now on 17GB.

Also it's nice to not have to worry about phone bills when you pay for 12 months upfront.

    • Me too!

    • +2

      +1
midway through my second year now and the data has almost tripled since signing up and couldnt be happier

  • Does anyone know when will Kogan allow roaming overseas? It is a pain that I can't receive sms or phone calls when I am overseas.

    • Not only does Kogan allow no roaming, they don't even let you call forward unless you purchase an "Upgrade Pack" on a monthly basis. Even with the upgrade pack call forwarding is is charged. Vodafone however offers call forwarding for free. This reason alone is why I will change carriers once im finished with my prepaid plan with them.. For me, if I go overseas I want to be at least able to call forward to a local Australia DID (Voip) number which I can use overseas without being charged extra for it

      • +5

Not sure if your comment was supposed to be a complaint.

MVNOs exist and are cheaper for the reason that some people dont require additional extra services that are usually factored into the monthly cost of host provider.

Things i expect to be missimg from mvnos are volte, vowifi, international roaming and call forwarding

      • +1

I'm unaware of ANY prepaid plan that allows global roaming. Please let me know if you know of any.

        • How, do you live under a rock? Loads of them do, including most of the major ones - Telstra, Optus, Vodafone, Aldi, Coles, Boost, Amayasim etc etc

        • Optus, Vodafone, Amaysim, Telstra, Ovo, TPG, Aldi. Arguably as to whether Ovo/TPG are prepaid, but they can "effectively" be prepaid.

Feel like I might be missing some too.

      • Interesting Point, I know this is not a solution but I guess you could change your voicemail to say please call me on X.

        • That will not for SMS verification from banks :(

  • +3

I woke up in the morning feeling like P Diddy

    • +2

I brushed my teeth with a bottle of Jack.

  • On my 23gb plan I have 26gb. Not sure how long I've had that limit for.

    • Possibly rollover from last billing cycle? It should go back to normal on the first of the month.

      • +2

Kogan doesn't roll over data from the previous month

        • Previous billing cycle, not previous month.

        • -4

adrenaline127 Get off ozbargain and concentrate on your extension mathematics class! As your teacher, I would advise that you not waste this precious study time that so heavily impacts upon your future career choices. Not to mention that you have your yearly examination coming up! 😠😠😠

        • +1

Maybe those anti-vaxxers are onto something afterall.

      • Kogan prepaid is rollover? Good to know as my 7GB plan is not

        • It rolls over from the last billing cycle until the start of the next month. i.e. data resets on the first of the month regardless of where your billing cycle lapse point is.

EDIT: Actually, turns out I could be wrong. I'll let somebody more knowledgeable answer.

        • @BuzzBuzzBuzz:

No roll-over. But the 12th month is more because it's 35 days not 30.

  • +5

I was pleasantly surprised (more like shocked) at how good Kogan is. Biggest surprise was actually their customer service.

    • +2

Kogan mobile doesn't do customer service, it is handled by Vodafone. I have a pleasant surprise with voucher refund and the refund came straight from Vodafone, that's how I realise customer service IS Vodafone.

    Woke up this morning

Was waiting for OP to break into a Blues song….

  • +4

Someone there only likes prime numbers…

  • -1

my medium plan has got the increase as well from 6 to 7 gigs

    • +5

This happened about 3 months ago.

  • +1

    Keep it up Kogan!

  • +1

    Likewise. I'm 16 to 17.

  • +4

Wow they jumped it to 32gb, that's crazy!

  • +2

awww im still on 23gb, wonder if kogan would upgrade us, they usually do.

    • +1

Not sure about existing customers on the website it appears they have bumped it up to 32gb

      • +5

I was just on the phone with one of Kogan mobile's customer service staff. He told me that the update to 32GB will apply for both new AND existing customer.

However, existing customers (like me on XL plan) will need to wait a bit until we get the extra 9GB. He also said that we will get text message to confirm that our 23GB plan has been updated to 32 GB, but it'll take some time.

        • +1

Just got the email confirmation check your inbox.

        • +1

          @Bellpop:

yup I got the email confirmation as well, but my data hasn't been changed to 32 GB

        • @blue2609:

did they mention how long it might take for existing 23GB accounts to be upgraded to 32GB ? few days ?

        • @finbar:

No idea mate, the guy that I talked to only said "it'll take a while" but that's it. I myself haven't received any upgrade to the 23 GB but my data will expire in 4 days anyway (3 days left after tonight) so it'll be renewed very soon and the next cycle will be 32 GB for sure.

        • @blue2609:

          Thanks

        • @finbar:

yeah let's hope it's soon because I'm running out of data here already as well. Damn, even 23 GB is not enough for me. Probably because I watch 720p youtuve videos on the train/download programs to my laptop on the train home :(

        • @blue2609: same here.

        • @blue2609:

Just had a look and I now got 32GB :)

  • +5

    Still on 23 here

    • +1

Same here. Have been receiving upgrades on my plan for all previous times they have bumped it… Although my rollover is in a days time so maybe has something to do with that?

  • +5

    YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS i love KOGAN mobile

last year they gave a free GB to everyone too.

I ran out of 16gb this month and tonight was my day of renewal, been waiting and hoping for something like this

  • +1

32GB per month. Nice… Can this last? There's no need for the NBN at this rate. Even if it lasts just one week with a bit of fiddling about changing SIM cards each week that's some 128GB of data over 4 weeks for under $20 using the discounted SIM card offer in another thread. The cheapest NBN plan is somewhere around $60/month.

I mean…I'm all for saving money and will definitely be taking advantage but is this to lure me into paying more in the future? Is there a catch?

    • +2

32GB wouldn't even last me two days on a wired connection, so we're still a long way off not needing NBN.

The catch is, to get the 32GB at the best rate you need to buy a year in advance. If you switch away or find you need a higher tier you don't get any of your money back.

      • +2

Two days… Wow… I thought I used quite a bit streaming video to the TV through a Chromecast for an hour or so each day. That is amazing. I do wonder how people get through so much.

I thought the current best deal from Kogan was the offer of $4.90 for the first month.

I've currently got a few 98 cent codes which should see me through until they are no longer valid. Yes I understand it's fiddly changing SIM cards but the saving is huge.

        • +1

Here's how I go thru 1TB per month: no local tv, just netflix/youtube/primevideo/googleplaymovie. 5 hours a day. everyday. Plus the standard wifi devices. So 32gb won't last me 1 day let alone 2.

        • +1

@Penpinch: time to leave the house

        • @Penpinch:

Sounds like you should get onto a free video streaming plan with Optus or something…

        • @Bellpop: yeah ikr. I work from home. lol.

  • +3

Love Kogan's free data bumps. It allowed me to jump down from an M plan down to an S, LOL.

    • Don't take full use of my M plan either (although I did buy on a 2 for 1 offer πŸ€—). Mobile always switched to wifi so most times it uses data from the NBN modem.

We OzBargainers are driving the trend to reduce mobile networks account costs … πŸŽ‰

  • +1

I got the email from them, but my account summary is still showing 23GB. Is it common for this to take time to update?

  • +2

    awesome!
Just got the email as well, account still shows 23GB, however my rollover date is 30th August, so will check it on Friday :D

  • +4

Very nice, these upgrades are why I chose kogan. Even got rid of nbn as find it much cheaper and more convenient to have just mobile data.

  • +2

By this time next year Kogan will probably upgrade everyone for free again. 100GB for the XL plan =]?

  • +2

    National Data
    32768.00MB

    Nice

  • +1

    Thanks, I have 17408MB now.

But I have only used 20000MB total in the last 3 months. They could give me more and it wouldn't make a difference in my usage.

They maybe paying for this with SMS spam. I have been getting more SMS since joining Kogan.

  • +1

32gb, can't wait! Now I can watch YouTube at 720p instead of 480p when I'm out.

One thing I realised over the years: you can never have too much mobile data allowance. I am always surprised how quickly you can burn through even 23gb a month if you put your mind to it.

    • +1

I dunno. I have 60GB, it may as well be unlimited. I try to use it and can't get close!

      • +2

Yes but u pay 80$ haha and we pay 20$, owned!

        • +2

          I paid 98 cents :D

    • +1

I'm on 23gb and had half a gb to use on last 2 days. This upgrade is great timing.

    • +1

If you have a work commute where you can't use much data (e.g. driving) and you have wifi at work at home, then yeah it's possible to have too much mobile data allowance!

      • +1

Yep, I have a longish commute on public transport, and no wifi at work, so big data is a must.

  • +1

I wonder what will be the future of Kogan Mobile plans when/if Vodafone merges with TPG.

  • +1

Does anyone know for the second voucher if it can be used on an existing kogan account.

The buy one get one free deal gives a single sim and two vouchers. The new SIM will be setup as a new account using up a single voucher, can the second voucher be used to recharge an existing account?

    • +1

      B1G1F gives 2 new sims.

      • +1

Oh ok,so the voucher won't activate for an existing one then :/

        • It does.

"If you are already a Kogan Mobile customer, simply login to your account, click recharge, choose your plan type, then enter your voucher. You will not need a new SIM Card."

        • @Penpinch:

Oh so if you buy a buy one get one free you can apply it to an already existing account? (I thought it said the buy one get one free was only for new users?)
