Cheap entertainment with the kid for mine. Good post op.

This seems expensive, we went to one last year this time and paid $8 for the tray and no per person price on top of that. And that was in Wanneroo not Bullsbrook, I expect a lot closer for most.

    • Wow, I used to drive all the way up to Bullsbrook when they first started and then over the years the boxes started getting expensive and they charged per person. Thanks for mentioning this, I think I will try one of the Wanneroo ones this year.

    • Hi browner which farm and do you still remember the address??

      Cheers

      • It was one on the east side of Badgerup rd, Wanneroo. Can't remember specifically which one but there's a few along (at least 3) that road.

There is a mass oversupply of Strawberries in the market currently. I know a farmer who has just binned a whole skip bin worth last week as every man and his dog are offering then to the majors (supers) but the demand is just not there. The $1 specials at all the supers are suppliers essentially selling large amounts at below cost to effectively reduce the waste bill. Great price point driver for the retailers and cuts back on the waste at th suppliers end. Not ideal but better than a full write off which is more labour intensive throwing in the bin than shipping away well below cost.

    Good time to buy strawberries!

    • Why would they pick them if the demand isn't there?

They could just leave them on the plant to rot and fertilize the soil.

They need to pick the ripening fruit to prevent it going mouldy while on the plant and then contaminating new fruit throughout the remainder of the cropping season.

  • .69c per 250g punnet at the grocers and you dont have to supply the labour.

    • True but after reading this deal I would imagine it would be more about the experience of taking the family out to the farm and showing the kids where our food comes from.
At the same time you are donating the entry fee and the cost of a tray to the farmers so it's a win-win situation for everyone.

  • A farm near me (in Wamuran) charges $10 for 9kg of strawberries. Insane deal. Don't have to pick them either.

  • Yeah I saw this post and looks good.

  • Update on fb:

Hi everyone! For those still planning to come out, we are running low on fruit now after a huge turnout this morning.

For those on the way already, there is still some left but it is towards the back of the farm so it will be quite a walk. We suggest waiting until next weekend now to give a chance for the fruit to ripen again.

    Many thanks! The PYO team.

  • Are you guys living under a rock? It seems like some of you didn't know that this was a thing.

  • Anything like this in Vic?

    • +2

Picking season in vic is more in the hotter months, usually November to February but December is usually the best. I've been to a few in Silvan (Dandenong ranges)

  • The ones in Wanneroo are close but then you get every man and his pig in there and trying to find parking is chaos, then you get in and have to compete with every man and his pig and if you are not there early enough you find only the dregs left behind that are not suitable for picking.

Much prefer to pay a modest fee for entry and actually enjoy the experience rather that feeling like you need to battle to find ones worth picking
