These are surprisingly good little speakers

    • I have UE roll 1st gen, very good sound, and great that they are waterproof (provided you keep the micro usb port covered, which I do by folding the strap overcrossed to hold it sealed) .
Its fun to put 1 in each pocket, and go for a walk with music cranking and just holding your phone . Ppl look at you in amazement wondering how your phone sounds sooo good :)
BTW, Supposedly the gen 2 are 15% louder and Bluetooth travels further (blutooth distance is probably the only disappointing thing about the 2 UE rolls I have).

    • Agreed! Bought mine full price a year ago 10/10 would recommend!

  • Agreed. Have mine a couple of years and from experience the battery life is decent and holds once switched off for a while. You can join two of them together and get surround sound which is great!!

    • By surround sound, you mean multiple speakers paying the same source right? Not reach speaker playing a different channel?

      • Looks like they may have taken away the ability to pair in stereo mode when they switched to the 2nd version.
The 1st version does support it, but no mention of Stereo anywhere in 2nd version:

        • What are you talking about? If you search the second link you referenced for "Stereo" without the quotes you get:

"WHERE CAN I GET THE ROLL 2 APP AND WHAT CAN I DO WITH IT?
You can get the ROLL 2 App from the App Store on your iOS device or the Google Play Store on your Android device (search for “ROLL 2”). • I can't see any stock available locally and can't add item to cart for postage.

  • From the OW reviews:

"May have to return as it is not detectable by so many phones, including my brand new MotorolaG5s and my friend's iphone6. Very annoying and have wasted time trying to get it to work, however it did work on my very old Sony android…strange."

Guess what phone I have. :(

My Galaxy S8+ and the Mrs iPhone 6 work no problems at all. Some people are challenged with tech

      • I can say I am not challenge with tech, but it is true that this device won't connect with some of my android devices.

        • Thank you both for the warning.

  • +1

I purchased & returned. Sound quality was terrible. Bought a UE Boom 2 & never regretted it. My view, these suck, bargain or not.

    • Did you listen to JBL Charge 3 or Sony XB30 before buying the UE Boom 2?

      • I really like my JBL Charge 2. Compared it to a UE Boom instore and much preferred the JBL. Store rep was plugging the UE Boom way more as it's more popular, but it sounded tinny in comparison. FWIW.

      • Can’t say I did. Sure these are also good options, this deal however is one to avoid :)

Here's a list of stores that supposedly have stock of either the Black or Blue speakers generated from my stock check tool sourced from their site. Low numbers likely to include stock errors, returns, etc. so best to call first. Any store not listed either have no stock or stock levels could not be retrieved (N/A).

      Thanks for the list.
      Black ("volcano") is $65.

  • +1

    Beware these have zero bass.
I got OW to price-beat a Wonderboom down to $94 instead. It has deeper bass than even the Boom 2.

    • +3

      Pricebeat who?

      • An eBay store selling for $99 with Australian stock and full Australian warranty. There was cheaper but had to be Aus with full warranty.

Also I did it over the phone. Don't waste your time trying in-store, there are people on the phone who specialise in price-beating.

    • +3

      Beware these have zero bass

Im not totally addicted to bass, at all , but I must disagree. From my experience, bass is fine, definitely not 'tinny' at all like some speakers.
It probably depends what sort of music you like to listen to, whether its bass heavy or not. Mostly I listen to mellow acoustic music, and nirvana, greenday , and also classical music. All seems to have sufficient bass . And I am a musician with a sensitive ear to any 'off tones' .

      • +1

The frequency response starts at 110Hz, but its actually a little higher than this in the real world, more like 120Hz.
Most subs do 40-160Hz. The Roll 2 is missing 3/4 of that range. Listening to electronic music, its not that it doesn't sound good, its that most of the bass is completely missing altogether.

Even the Boom 2 has very mediocre bass. It's there, but not at lower frequencies.

The Wonderboom was threshold for me. I wanted a Megaboom, but couldn't get a price-beat. Also its much bigger and heavier - not ideal for travel.

        • Listening to electronic music,

That is probably the one type of music I don't listen to (unless out dancing/clubbing).
I got a tiny portable speaker with a baby sub… Sounds awesome for trance music if you hold sub up to your ear lol. Probably need something with a seperate dedicated sub, for what you need. My friend has a JBL speaker with 2 subs on each end, seems OK .

        • @ozzpete:

Lol those JBL's have "passive radiators" on the side. They're not actively driven speakers.

  • +2

I love this thing. To be fair I rarely use it for music, mainly for news/podcasts in the shower. I've treated it so poorly over the years and it hasn't skipped a beat.

    • +6

Damn how long do you shower for?

    • +1

      I've treated it so poorly

Same with mine, Ive thrown them, put heavy things on top of them, dropped them, taken in hot sauna and spa many many times, treated them very rough, yet never skipped a beat. When drop into water, sound is muffled for that day, but clears up after it dries out.

  • The black ones are not discounted just certain colors.

    • +1

Black ones still discointed/clearance … But for some reason they are $65 . Originally these came out at about $149 or maybe $199 (for gen 1, which I have).

  • Is is possible to stereo pair with Roll 1 as I gave it and this is the Roll 2?

  • +1

Just bought two of these speakers, the quality is amazing and I love the stereo sound.

  • Thanks OP I was looking for another one at a cheap price so I could go into stereo… Only the blue ones for $50 but it's a better colour than my black volcano one.

  • Great deal, thanks OP.
**Anyone have any experience or knowledge regarding pairing a 2nd gen with the 1st gen which I already own ? **
I understand the 2nd gen is supposed to be 15% louder, I wonder if it would sound weird asf. I guess just turn the volume down 1 step on gen 2 perhaps.

  • The Jesus speaker.

    • I'm torn. The price is good but I don't want him watching me in the shower.

  • I've already got the blue one but might grab the black one for funsies :) and double pair them, thanks op!

  • Can someone please explain how two together equals stereo sound? Does that mean that buying one speaker you are only getting mono. To be absolutely clear I know nothing about these things. By what mechanism do they connect and how does this possibily then become stereo sound?
I recently ordered yhe Harmon Kardon Omni 10 on clearance for $50 from JB and they are getting it in from another store. Some of you are saying version one is only stereo when connected. Reading all the conflicting comments makes it hard to know who is correct in their information. Should I be cancelling my Harmon Kardo speaker from JB and ordering one of these instead? Or two to get supposed stereo. Some clear advixe would be helpful. I want stereo sound and now I'm actually worried the Harmon Kardon may not have it. Any help would be appreciated.

    • +2

For phones that support that feature, all it's doing is split up the left and right sound channels and then play them simultaneously to two different bluetooth devices.

So you buy two speakers, and pair them both to one device. The phone does the work of splitting sound and playing left channel sound to one and right channel to another

  • Is there anyone able to help me out here with my above comment. It would be much appreciated. I have asked a few questions on Oz bargain but don't often get a response which makes it hard to get deals in time when I'm not sure about how good items are especially with conflicting opinions. Can someone please explain my above/previous posts concerns. Thank you.

    • just buy bose headphones, they're better.

    • Each UE roll (and most portable bluetooth speakers) has '1 speaker' which is mono (single channel not stereo) . When I say '1 speaker' though, it may have a 'tweeter'(high range) 'a bass' and a 'midrange' speaker within that single speaker unit, however that cannot possibly give you stereo, because the tweeter/midrange/bass all have to do their spectrum of the range of tones.
I have 2 x UE Roll 1st gen, they do stereo through the phone app, left channel is sent to 1 speaker, right channel is sent to other speaker, thus creating true stereo (2 channel) sound .
if you want to know if any particular blutooth speaker has capacity for stereo sound in the single unit, either google it, or to make an educated guess… Look for 2 of everything though sometimes hard to see through the speaker cover
For example, I would think the JBL speakers that I've seen which are a log shape, and have a small speaker at each end speakers in the centre of the 'log' also (most likely 2 or more) , I would expect these to be stereo. Anything which doesn't look like it has 2 of everything (ie. 2 x bass , 2 x tweeters, or just 2 midrange would be stereo even) , then expect it not to have 'stereo sound' . Do we need stereo sound ?? Not really IMO . I have 2 UE Rolls, and at 1 stage had 3, however I mostly just use the 1 anyway. Have the other on charge, or sitting in car in case of musical emergencies. lol.
