Not quite as good of a deal as the previous Pixel deal? Currently paying 20GB for 24 months @ $49/m, this one is shorter contract but the handset will cost a fair amount of $?

    • Yep that's way better. Especially if you sell the handset.

  • +12

The standard retail prices of these top-end phones are out of control!

  • Got the gift card deal yesterday… It was one or the other, however, they didn't really try to sell me their handset deals, they know their outright prices aren't competitive. Also the xl was priced at $1199, so they are only really giving you $200 off anyway. Gift card all the way!

  • +1

If you go for the gift card option instead of this you can have the 128gb for only $100 more - I think that's a better deal

    for 12 Mths

That's good, considering Google will be abandoning the device in 12 months, besides basic security updates.

    • 6p are still getting updates.

      • +1

So they should get SECURITY updates until Sept 2018. Not Major updates though.

      • +1

        6p are still getting updates.

Guaranteed OS updates ended September 2017. Security updates end November 2018.

        • Yep spot on, so Google will support the Pixel 2 until Oct 2020 with security updates, and it will get the next major OS update in Oct 2019. - which is as much as pretty much any brand new phone released right now would get btw.

        • @OnlinePred: and probably the next major OS update in 2020 too, because don't forget Pixel has major OS update before everyone else, including Android One. Typing this comment on Android Pie official release, Google already stated Android Pie won't come to other maker until October this year. And don't forget Pixel 1 has Oreo and Pie update, that's 2 major OS for 2 years guaranteed. I don't even know if Samsung S8 going to get Pie update, considering they still haven't got Oreo 8.1.

        • @Bigboomboom: Not only S8 got Oreo update, pervious flagships S7/S7 edge now got Oreo too.
Also, Samsung S8/ 8+ will still get another major update. Samsung are just little slow to update their previous models.

        • @Bigboomboom: not sure what you are trying to get at here. I have s9+ and pixel 2 xl. S9+ has more features and more customisations than pixel will ever get. It gets monthly security updates, and is missing nothing from pie that actually matters. It will eventually get it, perhaps 6-8 months later, possibly after more bugs and issues are resolved too. Usually Samsung etc skip the x.1 releases and go for the major version.

The real question is when will pixels get good quality hardware, local support, headphone jack, quality accessories to back up their standards choices. Considering they are more expressive than Samsung phones and offer less

        • @Smokey010: Oreo 8.0, not 8.1. And no they are cheaper than Samsung.

    • Pixel 2 has 3 years guaranteed update and 3 year guaranteed security patch. It is the Pixel that is ending in October this year (2 years) with security patch ending October 2019.

    • Pixel 2 gets 3 years of major updates. Quite good value.

      • +1

        Quite good value.

Not for how much they charge IMO. If some kid in their basement at XDA can keep these devices up-to-date, so should Google.

        • +1

$899 for a Pixel 2 XL 64gb? What phone can you get for the same price that's comparable- with 3 years of guaranteed OS updates and 4 years guaranteed security updates.

I don't get what you are trying to say here - buy a cheap phone and get updates from XDA roms? That is less reliable than OTA from Google just FYI.

        • @OnlinePred:
PaindToad is right on the money.
Just because manufacturers are ending updates at a specific time is the status quo doesn't mean we have to be OK with it.

Arm based smartphones are a pretty bread and butter platform, as are x86 architecture PC's, and we don't see PC's stop getting windows updates when the PC is 3 years old, the updates continue for years after the inital OS release, and if the PC is capable of running the next OS they get more updates.
Windows XP received updates for 12 years!

I'm running 7.1.2 on my Galaxy S4 vs the 5.1 that Samsung stopped at, Phone runs better now then when it came out of the box with all the bloated Samsung crap in it.

Echoing PainToad, If some kid in their basement at XDA can keep these devices up-to-date, so should Google… and Samsung, and everyone else, right up until the device just can't run the OS anymore.

        • @virtual81: I agree. Although most phones don't get great xda after support roms. Perfect example is that you are only running 7.1.2. There are many security improvements and performance improvements in future releases that you don't have if you are running 7.1.2. So really if you are concerned about updates, the Pixels are the best line of phones. I think official support for these phones will only get better, and after support xda roms will be as strong as they always have for nexus/pixel.

        • @OnlinePred:

7.1.2 on a 5 & 1/2 year old phone that was purchased with android 4 and not officially updated past android 5 is amazing.
And all done by people whom aren't paid.
The most recent build of the official Linage OS for the S4 is only 7 days old.
After a quick google I've even found that there is an Oreo 8.1 ROM for the S4, I've not previously noticed in the past as I typically stick to Linage OS official.

These ROMs benefit from many security fixes just in a different way to googles official patches.
As for performance, it's been my regular experience that custom ROMs are always faster and often use less battery than Official ROMs.
You might loose gimmics like the Samsung video pause of you close your eyes, but that's all fluff.

        • @virtual81: Although that's great that you are able to get some updates through the modding community, things won't work on your phone, and a significant amount of effort is required ongoing to keep it up to date, or fix any issues etc when they occur.

I've been an xda member since my HTC Touch HD, and I am very familiar with custom roms and the process, mindset, resources, time that is required to do this. If that's your thing then sure you could get mostly any popular phone to do this with. But nothing compares to getting updates straight from your manufacturer. There were all too many times I had to wipe my phone after a dud cyanogen update for the phone etc. You have to have loads of roms on your phone ready to go, you have to have everything backed up and restoring it constantly. Or you just stick with one rom and don't update it, but then you are losing out on security updates etc.

  • Does anyone know if we can get this deal in conjunction with https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/396327 ?
