  • Looks alright, any gotchas?

    • +7

Yep. As usual - "Card Members who currently hold or who have previously held any Card product issued by American Express Australia Limited in the preceding 18 month period are ineligible for this offer. Previous and existing bank-issued American Express companion card members are eligible for this offer.."

      • Do "Card Members" include supplementary card holders who are not on the primary account?

        • No, they are separate.

      • Just FYI I got credit by applying via finder exclusive offer last time as existing amex card holder

    • Hi quarrymaster

The terms and conditions are the same as if you apply directly with American Express, but in order to access the 10,000 Bonus Points, be sure to apply through one of the Point Hacks links, which can be found within the respective cards Point Hacks guide.

      • +2

Does the exclusion applies to Corporate AMEX cards as well?

    • +34

You are essentially giving up the opportunity to earn a much higher signup bonus on other card products (although those products tend to come with an annual fee, more benefits/inclusions, higher point earn rates on specific categories, travel credit etc. - it's all a trade off).

      • Can you cite some past examples plz so it's easier to decide between the trade-offs

        • +11

The extreme end (of cards which you can apply for) is the platinum charge - $1450 annual fee, but 120,000 bonus points in the first year (worth, conservatively, $1,000), and other benefits noted below. In principle you can only get the bonus points once (and amex are cracking down on this). While you can always apply for that card after applying for one of these fee free cards, you can only have two amex issued cards at any time, and you probably don't want to cancel "lower-end" cards in order to apply for other cards due to the repeated credit checks (so most people are better off applying for the highest cards they want upfront).

The platinum charge card comes with a $450 travel credit (I value this at about 90% of face value given availability on through amex travel and slightly higher prices), free companion platinum reserve card (itself carrying a $400 travel credit), free priority pass (purportedly valued at US$399 although discounts are available from time to time), accor plus membership worth about $400 etc. If you travel often, you can clearly get value out of the platinum charge, so it's important not to lose out on the bonus points by applying for a lower end card early on.

Amex Explorer had a 100,000 bonus points for $3000 spend within first 3 months. Has a $400 yearly fee, but comes with $400 travel credit (which if you actually use makes the card free). Also has a better points earn (2 points per $ spent)

        • +1

@josho9: according to reports on AUSBT forum, you can now have >2 Amex issued cards. I might try for a third with shop small coming up.

        • +1

          @josho9:

you can only have two amex issued cards at any time

I have more than 2 Amex issues cards

      • +3

Very true. No one who’s (planning to become) big on points should apply for this card IMO. Don’t be put off by the annual fee for cards like the Explorer, the travel credit on such cards is a great way to offset the costs.

      • +4

This. Cannot stress this enough. So many times I wished I didn't get my essential card couple years ago as I missed out on the explorer mega bonus deals. At least this one gives you 10k. I didn't have a single point when I applied mine.

    • +1

Yep! You got to pay back your purchases!!!!

  • Card Members who currently hold or who have previously held any Card product issued by American Express Australia Limited in the preceding 18 month period are ineligible for this offer. Previous and existing bank-issued American Express companion card members are eligible for this offer

$750 minimum spend in the first 3 months required to receive 10,000 bonus Qantas Points

    • My previous American Express experience came as part of my ANZ AMEX/Visa twin. What they nixed AMEX, I kinda missed having those AMEX offers on OzBargain. This might be worth it for that.

  • +2

is there additional fee for additional/supplementary card holders for the American Express Essential card?

    • +3

      Hi PissLUR

You can get up to 4 supplementary American Express Essential cards for family members at no additional cost.

      • +1

i wonder why its not listed above for Essential Card?

        • Hi PissLUR

Thanks for pointing this out. It was an oversight and has since been corrected.

  • +1

So if I have a Westpac AMEX from the recent deal, I assume i'm still eligible?

    • +2

      Hi hotmustardsauce

Take from our Point Hacks guide relating to the Westpac AMEX card:

This is a bit technical but American Express is now issuing cards for Westpac directly, instead of being issued by Westpac (as previously used to be the case). However, for bonus points eligibility, this card is considered to be a bank-issued card, so won’t affect your eligibility for bonus points on American Express-issued cards.

  • If we got American Express Velocity Escape card last week (which was a poor choice to start with), can we cancel it and go for Express Essential Card? Or we're not eligible any more?

    • Not eligible

    • +1

I don't see why not, just don't expect to receive any bonus points.

  • +1

Ok guessing this wouldn't stack with the bonus running until tmrw where the referring user gets double referral bonus for signing up a friend?

    • +10

On the no fee Essentials card? You might be waiting for a while…

      • I mean wait for big bonus offers on cards like Amex xplorer

  • +2

Would this be eligible to most of the Amex offers, such as November shop small? What about amex lounge?

    • Hi double_J

Yes, the cards are eligible for Amex Offers and also the Local Champion game. However there are no benefits in relation to accessing American Express lounges.

  • -3

I have one of these cards. Does this mean I'm ineligible for the other two?

    • +1

      ineligible for the bonus points

    • Also, my understanding is that you can only have two amex issued cards at any given time.

  • any rumours around on another 100k+ bonus qff points amex deal soon?

  • +7

bit of a waste to reset your “amex bonus point lockout” for such a pathetic amount of points

    • maybe that's the idea ?

then again, this is a "NO Fee Amex Card"…and I don't usually see these No-Fee cards for AMEX
      (plus 10,000 bonus points too)

      • But Amex Explorer is a "kind of" no fee if you use the 400 credit, which is not hard if you travel at least once a year.

    • Well said. A big one for those that churn alot.
If not churning, then not a big deal

  • Meanwhile, Comm Bank is dropping AMEX.

    • All AMEX (Commbank) cards will be terminated in Nov 2018. Get another AMEX before then :)

    • I know! What bad timing to terminate in Nov, just before AmEx small shops offer and Christmas promos!

      • -1

That's probably exactly what CommBank wants

    • +1

Drop CommBank first before CommBank drops Amex :)

      • +2

Thats exactky what I am thinking - I am fairly well tied into Commbank being on the wealth package :(. I am so dissappointed they keep dropping "perks" so time to rethink in my banking loyalties.

        • What perks? I'm partway through moving to commbank home loan

  • By taking up this deal aren't we damaging our credit rating and mortgage servicability for credit card points?

    • Yes
Some would say it hasn't. Some say it has.
You make that decision at the end of the day to apply if you're chasing the points.

  • Are supplementary cardholders on another member's Amex eligible for this offer, thereby becoming members in their own right?
Or does that language about "currently hold" also make them ineligible for the bonus points?

  • So 10,000 points is just shy of $75? I need to get a fee free card as rental cars can be a pain using debit.

    • +1

Give or take yeah, depending what you redeem for'

  • -5

I never understand the point of credit cards. I'm good enough with savings to pay them off but what's the point of interest free periods other than to make you potentially forget you had to pay for something? Also it seems like points earned take forever to get anything good, especially minus the annual fees. Not sure what I'm missing

    • +11

Slight cashflow advantage, slight bonus from points, some level of purchase protection and ability to charge back, travel insurance.

The positives are only slight but if you have the means to pay off in full each month why wouldn’t you?

      • +4

Don't forget all the Amex Cashback deals … :-)

    • +2

I used to think like this. When you’re happily paying for everything using direct debit, why would switch to credit and risk the chance you forget to pay a bill, or worse be unable to pay your bill, etc.
Then this happened - there’s no going back for me.

    • Get them for the FF points.

    • also don;t forget benefits like various insurances, and purchase protections… which your bank never gives

    • +2

Set up direct debit from your bank and the risk of forgetting is gone.

Churn and burn to rack up sign up points. First class flights are easily achievable without changing spending habits.

    • fact or fiction, i got it for a better credit rating..to show the banks i could comfortably pay off debts, and bonus points for doing what i do normally.

    • +1

TLDR: You're currently getting no benefits, but still spending the same money. Check out the benefits, even if they're small and I'd say you'll go apply for a credit card pretty soon.

For the credit cards I have used I have set up auto-payment. I never spend more than I have saved and its just a debit card with some rewards and extra flexibility. LoopyLou below listed many of the basic benefits (purchase protection can also include extended warranty). Also - OzBargain where everyone is obsessed with maximising value is probably a bit of a biased market but if what you said is correct (about you budgeting and saving well enough) then a credit card is ideal for you.

      Benefits of credit card:
*1. Rewards - this may be points/flight vouchers/increased warranty or insurance. You are right - this needs to be traded off against annual fees but there are many good low fee/no fee options. The trick is finding the card that is best for you. There are often deals, like this, which give you the option to try a card with little risk to you. As also mentioned a reward is a slight interest benefit. Many cards have a 45-55 day interest free period but if you spend $2,000 a month on a credit card with a 30 day period you're getting 1 month grace before you have to pay it, but every month. Effectively you get $2,000 per year that you can earn interest on (with current rates this is ~$50-60 per year in extra interest.

*2. Flexibility in payments- The correct way to use a credit card is to already have the money saved. They are not to be used like a short term loan or you pay a stack of interest. That being said - if something goes wrong (your pay doesn't come through on time, you need emergency surgery, you have a banking scam happen than drains your accounts etc) you have flexibility. You can still pay what needs to get paid.

  • I applied for Qantas American Discovery card on the weekend and got it today. am i eligible to still get points?

    • No.

  • +1

Damn it. Signed up for the Essential card last month. OP help me out. :(

    • +1

      I did too :/

  • How much is 10000 points worth in monetary terms?

    • +4

Anywhere from 50-120, depending what you redeem on.

      • Thanks :) That's good stuff

  • Sorry for the lack of knowledge but whats so good about having an amex? I had a previous diamond commbank which i barely used cause of surcharge or places just didnt take them.

I'm not a huge spender so points didnt rack up that much anyway, only had it cause i had a free upgrade

  • Is it all night flights?

  • 10k of points? Are you serious? Terrible deal sad Trump face

    • +1

For people that don't qualify for the better cards or who don't spend enough to justify an annual fee, this could be a decent deal.

  • Are these 3 cards eligible for cashback deals?

  • -1

Existing platinum edge card holder got no chance I presume?

  • +2

I reckon the Qantas one should stack with this?

  • Is it first year $0 and then some $$$ to pay?

    • +1

      Ongoing $0

  • Get a referral, get more points

    • No referee benefit on any of those listed, is there? Ozb needs to update referrals info if there is

    • There is no referral for Qantas points

  • "No sign up bonus if you have ever had any Amex card"

These terms suck. I have watched stuff on YouTube from people in US and they have the much better condition that is one sign up bonus per card type, as opposed to the much stricter only one bonus ever.

  • qantas discovery link in pointshack website is not working

  • I've signed up for this and just received my card and all is well, is there any where I can go to check that I'm part of the bonus? If that makes sense.. like a progress bar towards reaching $750 spend or something like that? or even just a page that tells me that I will receive 10k velocity points after the 3 months? Thanks in advance if anyone can help me!

    • +2

Register an online account with your card. Then you will be able to see your transactions, amounts, and points. From past experience, very soon after your required minimum spend, you will see the bonus points. Hope this helps.

  • i got my card last week, there seems to be no more information about the 10,000 points.
does anyone know if we have to spend a certain amount to get these points?
or how long it takes to get them?
