  • expect cheaper prices with the new galaxy tab 10.1 out now.

Yeah, with the new Galaxy 10.1, the Galaxy tab has been well and truly superseded. No promise of a software upgrade even, which the Tab desperately needs!
There'll be 7" Chinese Brand tablets with the Android 3.0 Honeycomb OS that will be cheaper and better in use than the Galaxy Tab in the very near future.

    • No promise of a software upgrade even, which the Tab desperately needs!

Say it isnt true someone. At $550 you would naturally expect this to be the case.

      • It's Android so there's no reason you couldn't upgrade it yourself once Honeycomb is released.

The new one is probably going to be $500 more for what is essentially the same device but slightly faster, with a better camera (who uses their tablet to take photos?) and prettier case. This is also not locked to Vodaphone as the new ones would be.

        • Honeycomb IS released at least as a developer release… the Nook Colour has a hacked Honeycomb up and running to a certain extent.

Samsung will not be realeasing Honeycomb for this device. The only way you'll get it is by hacking, meaning you need coding skills, or a savvy enough community who will do the coding for you. I'm not convinced there are that many Galaxy tab owners out there who have the coding skills and desire to do the coding required!

It's obviously not "easy" to hack Android code to a device. For example, the Galaxy S still doesn't have Gingerbread despite the vast number of similarities with the Nexus S.
And the Galaxy S has a VERY active development community!

    Religious Debate! :D

For that kind of money you can buy a low end laptop which would be much, much faster. I'm assuming people buy these just for the portability…. but they cost twice as much as a netbook? Are they that much better than a netbook? Because it's just one touch-sensitive screeen?

    • +1

LOL.. instant on makes it worth twice of netbook already..

      • Ooooh I didn't know that… not bad then, I'm honestly curious why these are so popular (and so expensive, same goes for iPad I guess).

I've got a Galaxy S which has similar hardware to the tab (besides the obvious differences - the screen, for example)…. and it's a fairly limited device. I use it on-the-go, but it's not the most pleasant experience because it's nowhere near as fast as a more normal computer. So I couldn't work out why people would spend so much on a device like that when you can get a faster netbook for half the price :)

        • Flash your Galaxy S with a ROM from xda forums… then you'll see how fast the Galaxy S can go.. makes a significant difference!

  • People…. Is this a good deal? Please reply. Thanks in advance

    • Personally I think not.. given the impending onslaught of devices with Honeycomb out of the box.
The Galaxy Tab hardware is good, but the supplied software is poor.
It's not a terrible price if you have to buy buy one today (hence I haven't negged the deal), but there will be significantly better products in the next few months that will be half the price!

      • Thanks mate. I recently got a product from china. A 8 inch android 2.2 for $195. I am very happy with the product but the battery life is not that great. Video last for only 2 hours. But how much can i expect in $200 ? :)
The price is good for this tab but I think you are right. Bearing in mind such a tough competition on android product these days, one can expect a much better tab for such price. Appreciate your comment.

      • I think someone in the XDA will make the 3.0 rom for the Tab in the future at any time.
And the hardware spec for Tab is not really that outdated.
It should handle honeycomb pretty well.

The fact that the Nook Colour has Honeycomb already and the Tab doesn't makes me doubt your confidence.

I agree that the Galaxy Tab hardware is easily powerful enough.. I just doubt the coding power of the Tab owning community. I think the hackers that wanted a tablet saw the value in the Nook Colour and bought them instead of the Galaxy. (At $250 vs $500+, admittedly with slightly weaker specs, it's no wonder!)

  • Seems to be pretty good, cheapest available.

  • damn this is a very attractive price!
too bad I already decided to go for the XOOM…
