[AMA] I work at 7Eleven I was there when they underpaid their employee and left but I am back working for 7Eleven now

I was working for 7Eleven and did not realise that I was underpaid. I went through wages claim and got my money back. Now, I am working for the same store.( I put this because this would be the topic that people will have interest)

        • @supercheapguy:
Coffee machines and maintenance generally free from coffee company but need to buy x amount of coffee per week

        • It has to cost 'something'. I'm estimating around 0.20

        • @supercheapguy: nah, machine like that cost about 6k

    • How do you do that?

  • +9

Probably not something you can answer but why can't Australian 7-eleven stores be as amazing as the ones in Taiwan and Japan?

    • It’s near impossible to find a Coles or woolies equivalent in those countries. That’s why 7/11 serves everything from tampons to fresh hot food.

      • -1

One serve of tampons my good sir

        Haha

      • +2

        "tampons to fresh hot food."

Thanks, my dinner tastes so much better now…

      • I believe you are not correct.

There are plenty of supermarkets in Taiwan and Japan (lived there for a few years each) and stocks much better things than coles/woollies will ever store.

Basically I can walk out of a supermarket and go home to whip up dinner in 5 min coz everything is precooked or very easily cooked. The prices are also cheaper than 7-11 by a fk ton… Taiwanese and Japanese look at tourists and wonder why we keep buying things so expensive.. (I was asked many times by my friends when living there but I still go there like every second day when I was there coz its just soooo convenient)

I think it is not possible to store those variety in Australia as in Japan and Taiwan there are many stores and the population is a lot denser. It serves as convenient take aways that people will buy these ready to eat products on the way home or something like that. And because enough people buy them they can keep restocking these. Generally as one of my friends who worked in a Taiwan 7-11 store (friend I made when living abroad) hot foods are replenished daily.. Simply the turnover rate is not gonna be as high in Australia to store these food

Heck, they cant even finish selling sandwiches on daily basis..

    • Yeah I don't think there will be a day where 7/11 here can be as cool as the ones in Taiwan and Japan :((((

    • Because if they did, no one would buy it?

We don't have the same culture as East Asian countries.

  • +5

What items they sell have the biggest margins?

    • +3

      Slurpies I suspect.

    • +20

      Workers

    • +5

Smokes, drinks, chocolates pretty much everything. I had a chance to look at the cost price for a chocolate bar and 7-Eleven sells it for more than 250% . That’s why they can do special every months

  • How popular is 7/11 day ? And bring your own slurplie container day ? Please list some of the abstract containers you’ve seen. I once brought in a KFC bucket.

    • I hardly work at those days as the store gets messy and needs to be clean very often

  • +1

AH! I've been waiting to ask this of a 7 Eleven employee.

Why do most stores refuse to honour the monthly "Your Good Call Rewards". The instructions are simple:

    1. Customer presents their voucher on their phone, or printed
    2. Scan the item
    3. Touch the ‘evoucher’ button on the POS
    4. Scan the printed voucher, or ask the customer to scan the voucher on their phone (do not touch their phone)
    5. Finalise the transaction

But always the 7 Eleven employee says "It's not working". Do they not want to give away the free item?

    • +1

I've had a similar thing a few times, they honestly have no idea this thing even exists because so few people know about it.

      • I kept going to one store who was honouring it, then it closed down (unrelated I'm pretty sure). I need to find another store to go to now.

        • It’s system error most of the time. I consider myself as tech savvy and I tried many ways to claim and sometime system won’t let u do it. I would also blame staff member too as most got too little training.

What happens to all the krispy kreme donuts, when the new batch comes in the morning ?
Do they usually get thrown in the trash ? Are you allowed to give them away to people who come in the store ?

    • If you thropw them out at midnight, would I be able to come in a few hours earlier, after work, like 6pm, and get the ones you usually throw out early?

    • Please answer this OP! I'd like to know if the KK donuts are truly fresh or if they leave yesterdays in there. Also it's self serve so do people touch them and cough over them? I'm too scared to purchase just in case…

    • +2

Does a day make a difference on those donuts? Theres so much sugar in them I thought they must be preserved almost as well as a Mcdonalds cheeseburger

      • Yep, there's no such thing as a fresh KK doughnut.

    • +2

If you work night shifts and have left over doughnuts , it’s up to u to throw away or keep it for yourself. Manager does not care. However, you are not allowed to give out to people as they are not “ good enough” for food safety guidelines. I used to bring home and give to my friends as they get sick of eating doughnuts. They are also delivered every nights so you know they are fresh.7 eleven can’t decide how much they want to sell. Kk will send whatever they want and let you sell

Really not even super powers but only money where only humans put a value on it where as it is so meaningless elsewhere in the universe?

      • i love your answer

  • +2

Did you know the n in "eleven" is the only letter not capitalized?

    • +3

      I DOnUT believe you.

    • +1

Almost as mind-blowing as the arrow in the FedEx logo. 😯

  • How many Kgs did you get from eating all the leftover Krispy Kremes?

Do/Can you eat the leftovers or do they go to the bin or you act as a hero and give it to the homeless?

    • +1

In brisbane cbd, there's like a couple of homeless outside 7-11 ~ I wonder if this is why….

    • +3

I used to eat doughnuts when I started working there. I am sick of it now.

  • +9

Do Japanese people ever enter your 7/11 and get visually upset or disgusted with the Australian concept of a convenience store?

    • I don’t believe so as I have never been to Japanese 711

  • Honest question -why would someone not work for Woolworths/Coles/Aldi etc over 7 eleven? I assume this isnt a 'career' job for you. I worked at woolies from 17-22 and thought it was a great place to work! (Note: avoid front end if possible)
    )

    • +1

Maybe because they couldn't get a job there? Just because you got a job there doesn't mean everyone can, especially someone who is older or (like OP was) an international student

    • My partner's sister works for a Woolies servo. Apparently 7eleven pay more on weekends. It's $35+ for 7eleven and only $24 for woollies. Something to do with a union agreement. I forgot the word she used. So that might be one reason.

      • How old is she? $35 on a weekend for non Sunday, non after 8pm Nightshift seems high

    • +3

Woolworths/coles and Aldi won’t hire someone with temporary visa. I believe this is the reason and they have Human Resources to go through where 711 is owned by one guy in most cases.

      • Pretty much correct, the hurdles we had to jump through for working rights made it not worth while. Also looking to retain talent, so a temporary visa doesn't meet the criteria.

        • +1

Speaking of talent, the staff that I see at coles and Woolworths are trained to say “I will get the manager “ most of the time. Even more information about special. Most workers at 711can manage the whole store by themselves

        • @supercheapguy: Lol if 711 workers says they are getting the manager to me, i would absolutely lose it. i mean look at the size of the store.

        • @supercheapguy: I would expect in a 7/11 the team member that's on would be the only one working, so they would in fact be the manager. In a supermarket however you have multiple departments and multiple managers.

        • @Soluble: I won't blame them but they have 0 knowledge even you ask them about special. As for me, I need to read through 711 promotion book and learn for customers

Do you ever wear name tags that are not your real name?

I ask because back in highschool we had a 7Eleven nearby that had about 3 Chinese men running the store at different times and I'm pretty sure some days they all wore the "John" name tag.

    • +5

Are you sure they weren't the same Chinese man? ;) Alllooksame.jpg

      • +2

Probably brothers - John was their last name.

        John Ah Yi
        John Ah Er
        John Ah San

(yes in china, your last name usually comes first.)

        • If the last name is first and the first is last but here the first is first and the last is last where does does the middle one go?

        • +1

          @Zedsdeadbabyzedsdead:

          The middle…

        • @Zedsdeadbabyzedsdead: It's technically not a middle name though. It's part of their first name. So "Ah Yi" is actually the first name for example.

    • At coles you're not allowed to not wear a name tag. Probably same rule

    • +1

My co worker used to do that as he forgot his badge one day and someone from head office was coming to review during the night. Or people like to be called English name as their real names are hard to pronounce

    • +1

I used to work for retail and on the days when I couldn't find my name tag, I just wore any name tag with name I liked :P

      • +2

We used to have a few name tags for team members that forgot there's. 'Gertrude' and 'Boris' are a couple that come to mind. Ahhh the good old days.

      • +1

back in my day, i used a name tag of someone that does not work in the store. Apparently some customer made a complaint to the HQ but they could never find who it was

  • +1

    Love your username, OP

    • +1

Maybe he is currently or has previously worked at supercheap auto. Subtle promotion of the store.

    • +7

No. I live my life as my name at ozbargain. I am addicted to constantly looking at deals at ozbargain every time I get a chance.

  • How many days do you keep the donuts for before you throw them out?

    • +1

Receive at night and throw out next night

  • As you mentioned you worked when they underpaid their employee, Did you claim anything through 7-Eleven Wage claims program?

    • I claimed through 711 wages claims program and it was pretty quick. I was gonna do that with some Lawyers (I forgot the name) they specialise in work related incidents. They took more than 2 weeks to get back to me so I let them go and 71 wages claims was free so why not. I am sure I have to fork out some money for lawyer if I went with them

  • +2

Where is OP gone ? Only answered 13 questions.
Must be doing a quadruple shift.

    • +2

      Haha.

    • +6

Appreciate that OP has gone through and responded to more questions after you posted, but can I just say that OP has been super responsive and this has been a great AMA.

  • are you planning for a career change. to what

    • +3

I am working at retail because of money and I would like to own one of these on the future

  • +2

    Great AMA OP. Thank you!

  • Having been in retail pretty much my whole life I enjoy the retail AMAs. Interesting to see other sides!

    • Where did you work? Maybe you could do an AMA next?

      • I have thought about it, I've kind put enough info in the other AMA threads and try and answer Q's in them. My Career summary - Dad had a milkbar/fish 'n' chip shop from when I was around 5, so pretty much grew up working there(Yeah I was that kid selling smokes at 12), started with Coles when I was 16. Went through Dairy, Grocery, Duty Manager(several stores), Dry Goods Manager(several stores), Store Support Manager(2IC basically). Then Moved onto First Choice about 9 years ago, managed 4 different stores before finishing up a couple of months ago. Regardless of what anyone says if people have the motivation, the career progression and money is extremely rewarding.

  • what sort of percentage were you owed when you were underpaid? as a percentage out of a weekly income. Don't need to know wage of course

how long of a period were you underpaid?

Did you buy something super nice with the payout?

    • +8

I can say I got $38 grand for 2 and half years. I deposit that money to buy my apartment

      • +2

Wow. That’s a fair amount to be owed

Glad it helped you get into the property market. Probably worked out better in the end for you!

        • Yeh i am pretty happy that I got my money back and got the job back with proper pay

  • Hi do you ever get the exclusive funko 7/11 pop vinyls in store?

  • Is there any 7-11 branded products that you recommend? And, what you don't recommend at all? :)

    • Coffee and muffins are not bad and all the 7eleven products are pretty good and affordable

    • +1

I can never get away from people like you

      • -2

        Is it an AMA?

      • +1

supercheapguy, haters going to hate, best to ignore and it generally catches up with them. Well done on a very interesting AMA and actually taking the time out to answer the questions. I now know what happens to the Krispy Kreme's and when is the best time to go instore to get one!

    • +4

      Wtf is chicken masala?

  • When you were workinv there, did there seem to be a hiring policy against hiring Australian people ?
It doesn't seem fair that they never hire Australian people. I only ever see Indian people employed at all of 7/11 stores.
Why do they not employ some Aussies ?

    • +8

Is that a joke? I can tell you people from overseas are working jobs that local won't work like waiting tables or like cleaning

      • -3

I live in an area of very high unemployment…. Im sure that Australians would want the work. Yes, there are some people that are unemployed because they are lazy and/or too picky with what jobs they will do. However in areas of high unemployment, there are plenty of unemployed Australians that would be happy to do any work (provided they are paid and treated fairly, which previously 7/11 has been proven to breach fair work laws).

      • +1

Nepotism and many other variables need to be added in before you decide such things.

    • +4

Why do they not employ some Aussies ?

Usually, lazy people don't get a job.

    • It seems like a valid question.. Having been with Coles for a long time, similar things happen across brands. I would say it's the Aussie culture around working nearly every weekend and overnights etc. (Yes I'm Aussie) but I see it a lot where sport, lifestyle etc. Take priority over getting that job. As well as the 'im not getting out of bed for anything less than $30 an hour'

      • Agreed

    • +2

Nepotism plays a large role, as usual some nutty person will just shout racist to end the convo.

    • Indians can be Australians

  • Have you ever met anyone who actually liked the lamington flavoured slurpee?
