HP 5102 Netbook $259 on eBay $249 Instore (Wynyard, Sydney) - 2G RAM, HD LED Display, 6 Cell Bat

557

Hi All,

This is the ebay URL;
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/HP-5102-10inch-Netbook-N450-1-66Ghz-2…
It's from the same store but it's $249 inc. delivery

I just picked up this netbook, it was by far the cheapest around when the specs are taken into consideration. It comes with Windows Vista but if you can live with that or upgrade it to Windows 7 (like I plan to) it's pretty good value.

Intel Atom N450 1.66GHz CPU
2G RAM
160G 7200rpm HDD
10.1 (1366*768) HD Display
Wireless N Bluetooth
2MP Webcam
6 Cell Battery
Vista Basic

I purchased mine from in store at Wynyard, not sure if the other stores have stock but they should because I was told that they have 300 in their warehouse

***was $249 delivered on ebay but the price has gone up to $259 - I still presume the price in store is $249 but it may have also gone to $259.

On Catch of the Day today for $299-379 with 2 year warranty and (what I assume is) a 3G PCI Express card preinstalled (about $20-40 value, depending on the card).

Wonder if OrangeIT would refund a bunch of us, given how long they're taking to post ~200 netbooks…

  • I got the COTD deal as well…

Anyone want to take this OrangeIT off me? I got it for $249.

I'm based in Sydney. Thanks :)

    • is that 3G card really worth the $50 more?

      • Depends if you want 3G or not. But the upgrade to Win7HP from Vista Basic is worth the $50 alone, IMO.

      • It's worth about $20-40 off eBay (assuming you can install it yourself and it's not 'restricted' like Lenovos). 2 year warranty is more likely to be worth $50 more. WIndows 7 is somewhat irrelevant as I recommend a netbook OS for a netbook.

  • Mine arrived today. Got two of them. HP box seal was broken, but netbook looks brand new.

Now to sell them. Not looking at making a profit, just covering my cost.

    • I'm thinking customs was more likely to break the HP seal. If OrangeIT did it - it would just be to check the stock was working before shipping it out (lowering their costs on DOA returns).

Mine too, in perfect condition. It's so much 'smaller' than my Lenovo S10e, the lid is quite a bit colder too!
The protective cloth is still between the LCD and keyboard (which still has the plastic surround attached)

I LOVE the button on the battery.
I dislike the touchpad. Not sure I'll ever get used to a shiny surface one like this, might have to buy a mouse. :(

    • How are you going to do this? Ebay? I'm on the same boat…

  • :-)

No receipt in the boxes either. I emailed them and will wait and see.

    • No manual either! (Cheap HP!!)

  • Mine finally arrived today. Box unsealed and seal broken on plastic bag on the machine.
I'm wondering if these all had to be opened to add or delete something in the hardware before sale? Anyone??

Not happy with the time it took either..ordered on 14/2..delivered 22/2

    • Hmmmm…Just fired it up to do the setup and a whole bunch
of keys don't work on the kayboard.
      The "9" "O" "J" "K" & "M" keys all kaput!!

Beware of these machines and this seller.

I will be giving them a large serve of bile in the morning.

      • That's likely a keyboard seating issue, unfortunately you'll have to return it for warranty!

(Unless you want to do it yourself..)

      • My "Enter" key only works 50% of the time, I'll have to see if it 'wears in' or if it's just a particular 'depression' ;) it dislikes.

    • They add extra 1gn ram themselves

  • okay. so these netbooks are slow as!
even my old MSI Wind u100 is faster… =/

    • Remove Vista!

    • you sure?
my em350 is same spec'd as these(w/o bluetooth and 6 cell battery(em350 has 3 cell))
and it works fine with any OS(W7 ulti, Ubuntu netbook, W7 HP, etc)

      • I am on Windows 7 Ultimate. File transfer over WiFi is slow as a snail, and so is the rest of the computer.

        • It's possible the wifi is of lower quality than the chip/antenna in your MSI Wind.
The computer speed seems fine thus far (similar to my Lenovo S10e) in Vista, Chromium OS and Ubuntu.

        • Additionally, Ultimate with all it's features may bog down an Atom.

  • Help need. I formatted the hard drive and installed windows 7 starter. However, there is no wifi. Any idea how can I turn that on?

Also, thoughts on how to install the recovery image from d: incase I want to go back to vista?

  • One of mine the middle row of the keyboard does not work at all! Do I contact them direct?

    • Looks like some of these machines were built on a friday eh?

I contacted OrangeIT about mine and they advise to send it back to them so their tech can see the problem and they will then exchange for a new one.

BTW: I bought mine through their Ebay site.

    • Same here, the entire right hand side of the keyboard does not work at all. The HP packaging it come in had the seal broken and the edges of the carton were covered in brown tape, wondering if I got a dud that was previously returned to them?
Not happy about having to pay return freight on it though, carton was obviously opened previously and if so should have been checked to see if it was operational. Not happy Jan!

  • Send it back? I am not paying for shipping. If I send it back they can keep them!

    • Rang them about my keyboard, was told they would credit my paypal account with the return shipping, waiting for written confirmation first.

      • No credit on return freight, decided to re-seat the keyboard ribbon and it returned the keyboard to full functionality, all good, now to put win7 on it.

  • 32 bit or 64 bit Windows 7 on this baby? Help?

    • maximum ram is 2G so there is no need for 64 bit

    • This netbook does support 64 bit.

      • Agreed. But no need to put 64 bit on with only 2Gb of RAM. 32 bit can see all of the memory fine.

  • I installed Windows 7 Starter. Works fine. But cannot get the internet to start. Saying issue with network drivers or something.
Has someone had same issue after installing windows 7?

    • Windows 7 install disc doesn't have any drivers for either the wireless or wired network hardware on the 5102. So you'll need to download the drivers and install from a USB key.

      • thanks for the tip. As you said it was the driver issue. It all works now.
        Cheers

Checked my warranty details for the unit I am sending back for warranty at http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/weInput?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=a… after noticing in the system info installed by HP, which shows warranty start date being 25/6/2010.
HP site tells me that the Warranty End Date 2011-08-21 (YYYY-MM-DD), anyone know how this info corresponds to orange_it 2 year warranty?

    • +1

Also on that site it says legally, the warranty starts on the date of your receipt, so no dramas hopefully.

"The result displayed is solely based on information available to HP. The legal warranty expiration date is based on the date of purchase as indicated on your receipt. This date might differ from the results shown.
If the displayed result is not correct please contact an HP Technical Support Technician for further assistance."

Thanks Waladare for the link..very handy

      • Hopefully, wish I didn't have to be bothered with the warranty info, gotta send it back seeing half the keyboard doesn't work…..seems i'm not an orphan though.

  • Is it worth ringing HP for warranty? May not need to send it back then!

This is the HP link to remove the keyboard, has a link to video for instructions. All I did was release the keyboard ribbon and put it back in, now all the keys work.
3 screws, carefully un-snapped the keyboard….follow the video…no warranty, anti tamper stickers or warranty voiding features.

      http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.js…

I put the battery back in with the keyboard only connected by the ribbon to make sure I connected it properly and all working now, very happy. Now to put Win7 on, Vista looks slow, preyty sure the HP software slows things up.

At least now I know where the hard drive is, I want to put in a larger capacity.

Does anyone know if it's possible to make the "fn" key and associated F-keys act like every other laptop, ie reverse the current way they work?

    • in the BIOS

      • Thanks. It was buried pretty deep in there.

Those who complained about the initial $10 price rise on ebay will be disappointed to know they bumped it up by another $30. it is now $289 on Ebay, and no longer available on the OrangeIt website. I guess they must finally only have a few left..

  • Anyone know how to restore this back to factory vista? I had to fix the keyboard myself and now want to start afresh.

  • Keyboard is dead again!!!!
