HP 5102 Netbook $259 on eBay $249 Instore (Wynyard, Sydney) - 2G RAM, HD LED Display, 6 Cell Bat

557

Hi All,

This is the ebay URL;
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/HP-5102-10inch-Netbook-N450-1-66Ghz-2…
It's from the same store but it's $249 inc. delivery

I just picked up this netbook, it was by far the cheapest around when the specs are taken into consideration. It comes with Windows Vista but if you can live with that or upgrade it to Windows 7 (like I plan to) it's pretty good value.

Intel Atom N450 1.66GHz CPU
2G RAM
160G 7200rpm HDD
10.1 (1366*768) HD Display
Wireless N Bluetooth
2MP Webcam
6 Cell Battery
Vista Basic

I purchased mine from in store at Wynyard, not sure if the other stores have stock but they should because I was told that they have 300 in their warehouse

***was $249 delivered on ebay but the price has gone up to $259 - I still presume the price in store is $249 but it may have also gone to $259.

  • Might want to correct the specs on screen resolution. Its not 1366x768 from what I can remember.

the hard drive can't possibly be 7200rpm, could it?

    • +1

All the specs are correct - call the shop to confirm, if you like.

  • no way its 1366*768
    cnet says 1024 x 600 pixels

    • +2

I assure you that the specs are correct - The screen has been upgraded to 1366*768 - Call the shop to confirm. My work computer doesn't let me upload a pic from the side of the box so I can't post a pic from the side of the box.

      • Hey I just called York Street. They said 1024 x 600…

Bro, please confirm! Did you get it from York Street?

        • +1

I got it from the Clarence st store

        • +1

          I called Haymarket store and they confirm it's indeed 1366 x 768.

I'm at the shop right now and doing this ridiculous slow Vista initial setup…. Once I get into Windows I shall check the screen resolution…

          Coming back soon!!!!

        • +1

          I can confirm the panel is indeed 1366 x 768. :)
          I brought one… the best value :)

        • you BOUGHT it or did you bring it home ie you bought the laptop then brought it home

        • +2

          Sorry for my typo…

I have purchased this laptop after confirming the screen resolution and the HHD speed of 7200rmp!

    • nvm….

  • +6

Definitely appears to have a 1366x768 screen:

CNET says: "All Mini 5102s in Australia come with a 1366x768 native resolution, 10.1-inch screen;"

    • +1

1366x768 on a 10" LCD is pretty amazing in the Australian marketplace. I don't think I've seen a netbook with a resolution as high.

      • Agreed! Very decent value netbook.

  • +5

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/HP-5102-10inch-Netbook-N450-1-66Ghz-2… - This is now on ebay for $249 delivered!!! from the same place!!

    • The eBay price was just raised to $259.

  • +1

aww so i dont get any credit? :(

  • +1

How long is the battery life on this?

    • +1

Not sure because I just picked it up a 2 hours ago but it does have a 6cell battery so it should be okay. I did see some reviews that spoke about battery life but they were reviewing the 33cell battery

      • +3

        33CELLS!!! WOW! :P

        • +6

nothing compared to my 99 cell

        • +3

Nothing compared to the 1000 cell battery Broden got from ToysRUs.

        • pfft. that's got nothing on my 9999 cell

        • +2

          That's OVER 9000 cells!

  • +3

very nice price given the specs for the reso and the harddrive are correct. i think this is better than the EM350 deal $160

    • It's funny that everyone questions the spec's, they are unbelievable and I assure that they are all true.

The netbook also comes with an HP case zip-up case and the brushed aluminum look on the top looks really good

  • +1

Was almost about to buy but then realized that it had windows vista. No go for me.

  • +1

    Bloody Vista :(

    • +1

      If you have a copy of Windows 7 this link explains how to convert the DVD to a flash drive so that you can upgrade;
      http://store.microsoft.com/help/iso-tool

Coincidentally, the laptop runs pretty well with vista as it has the 2gb of RAM

      • I would just wipe the damn thing clean and use one of my Technet licenses. Great deal but still a pain in the ass to do.

    • +1

      Installing MeeGo.

      • That's cool. I wouldn't be game, but I'd certainly throw Ubuntu Netbook remix on it (unless it had GMA500 graphics.). Anyone know what graphics chip it uses?

  • Great price, 2G ram and 7200rpm drive for $249 , cant get better than this.

  • maybe time to upgrade my eeepc 1000HA

  • -1

Touchscreen, as seen on this review-
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-avyncRTT2A

    • It's not a touchscreen - That's a different screen option

  • -1

CPU too slow, still can't play 1080p mkv :(
can't complain for the price though. Meh. I'll stick to my 1008ha modded with 2gb until 1080p mkv playback comes out for cheap on these netbooks

    • +1

You will probably have to wait until AMD zacate lands in Australia then.

    • +2

      1080p on a 720p screen, smart!

Noted though, my Atom 1.60GHz has issues playing 720p downscaled smoothly.

  • Great Deal!
time to sack my Dell heap-o-crap

  • +1

this looks good, i need one for my IT course but i wonder if this can handle the work? compared to a laptop its slower but cheaper and much more portable, i think notebooks are selling cheap to clear out stock cause all these new announced tablets are hitting the market in a few months

  • Just grabbed one of these…great deal for a cheapie
    netbook. Just what I needed.

    Another win for OzBargain! Thanks.

  • +2

    if I didn't already have a em350 then I go this machine.

bonuses are the 6 cell battery and 2gig ram.

    1024 x 600on the em350. is this adjustable?

still waiting for emachines cashback. 6 weeks and counting.

    • Got my cashback at 10wks after they acknowledged receiving docs.

  • Great deal! I am very tempted to get one even though I don't need one. I think these things look fantastic, average netbook specs but a 7200rpm drive and THAT SCREEN! (I am pretty excited about the screen….)

    • +2

I never thought much of them. I always thought they were too small. underpowered, etc.

I had a 15inch toshiba laptop previously that died.

got a em350 and I can walk around the house with it. it's light. great wifi.

this HP with nice resolution would be sweet.

buy it Zelka. you deserve it.

      • I had the original eeePC, it was pretty good for what it was, sold it for 1/2 the price 3 years later to fund a laptop for my sister.

I now have a Probook 4510S (which I love) and this laptop looks exactly the same minus the numpad, and its obviously smaller. That is the real reason I want one. I want the mini me to my laptop hahaha. I don't know if I will get it…I need that money for my final year of uni and this will not help me in anyway…friggin impulse buys, must curb them!

  • Here are the current drivers for anyone interested:
    http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/DriverDownl…

I just bought one from their Ebay site, cheaper than their website.

I've been looking for a cheap netbook with >/= 720p display for a while. This seems like a decent choice.

    • Which one is the wireless driver???

  • They just upped their eBay to $259 and changed "Stock available" from 97 (eBay mobile website) to "More than 10", "12 sold".

    • Looks like I got in just under the line then. I got the added insurance for a total of $254 delivered.

    • possible because their online store is linked to ebay store(as in they use same stock) and therefore they sold 12 on ebay and sold 85 on their online store

  • hmmm ebay store increased the price to $259 now as well… still a great deal though.

edit: just saw the comment above :P

  • Nice find.

  • LOL WTF the seller saw people buying this so he puts up the price by 10 bucks hahahaha

  • +11

They just whacked the eBay price up $10 to match their online price…..that move alone just stopped me buying one. :(

    • +13

lol, yeah I waz about to buy one but that stopped me too. Squeeze another 10 bux outta everyone? Not nice.

      • +7

Yeap, that stopped me buying too.

        • +1

yeah was considering AMD fusion netbook ……. suddenly increase price stop me from getting.

        • Same here

      • +2

Even with an extra 10 bucks it's still a great deal, and I've been looking for one for uni. Great find.

    • +10

yes, stopped me from buying as well.

    • +5

      Agree'd. I'm staying away.

      • +8

Seriously, $10? A 4% increase in price changed your mind? Guys, if you need the laptop, $10 is neither here nor there. Methinks you didn't need the laptop to begin with.

        • +8

Methinks you didn’t need the laptop to begin with.

+1 Impulse buying got to you

A $10 difference to a laptop is nothing for a laptop that you want

        • That's why this is OZ Bargain…looking for Bargains..even if it's a few dollars. Cheap with the 'est' at the end. It's no rocket science.

  • -7

Never buy anything from HP again, They sell defective product and they have the worst customer service in Australia. just search "HP sucks" on Youtube, more than 5000 video tell you why HP sucks.

    • +13

jeez i remember i replied to one of these and you asked it here it is again

I do not want same thing happen to others, they sell defective DV9000, dv6000, dv2000 laptops, and they know that their laptop will stop working after couple of month or little bit over one year, and they still sell them, I bouth one for $1400, victims are overwhelming. that is the truth, why cant I say? are we communism now?

        • +1

Dell and other company recall their product have same defective video chips, and NVIDIA paid for their defective chips to those company to recall those laptops. but HP did nothing but put those money in their pocket.

        • -1

but it's still under 1 year warranty!

        • +2

they sell defective DV9000, dv6000, dv2000 laptops, and they know that their laptop will stop working after couple of month or little bit over one year, and they still sell them

          +1
i have heard/read many stories about defective laptops(home based) i have an HP i7 laptop that gets quite hot(presumably i7)
but i have to say that most post/comments about HP built is by people who have problems with them, you will rarely see/read a post with no problems(what i'm trying to say that is people won't talk about a product when it is good, they will only talk about problems they have)
          and also
all electronic brands(whether computers/laptops, or air conditioner, or even a TV) have/sell defective, its just the draw of the lucky one that is not defective, but hp home-based notebooks have one of the HIGHEST defective rates, but their business notebooks are quite good(in terms of failure rates)

        • +2

Yes ,I know what you said, but have you see any laptops broken more than 70% (even more) before two years, the I7 is fine because it does not have a 8600GS, the 8600GS never last more than 2 years, all old DV with and all other company recall but HP. their are 1000+ post against HP in HP website, and those post still there, HP never replay those post. and also the 1 years warranty, so I should hope my laptop broken within 1 year? and those broken within 1 year got fixed for sure, but they all broken again very soon, after warranty HP stop fix those, too.

the link show 700+ post (were 1000+, been deleted) against that, and post were too many to delete.
          http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Hardware/HP-dv2000-600…

and on youtube, I can find more than 500 video against same issue.

DELL fix my wife's laptop after 3 years for free, any DELL told me their product was defective and I did not know that.

        • +2

I just try to help you avoid a bad company. Produce defective product is fine, but to avoid recall is breaking the law.

I dont know why you guys attack me, I assume you work for HP, or you just not clever enough.

        • +2

Same thing happened to me. My dv9000 display stuffed up after two years because of the nvidia chip. Will not buy another HP.

  • the only thing that has got me interested in this machine is the awesome HD display at this 10.1" size!

I wonder if it's possible to replace my netbooks 1024x600 display with a 1366x768 display hmm…

  • Anyone know how long the warranty is?

    • +1

      One year.

  • temping, especially with that nice lcd and bigger 6cell battery but i wanna hang out for a dual core cpu, you won't be playing crysis on this but a bigger screen resolution generally needs a faster cpu/gpu

  • +1

Price on site has been raised after sale offer was posted.

    Neg.

    • +2

Price on site stayed the same. Price on eBay changed (the listing is user submitted, and was updated with the eBay link).
It's likely they accidentally listed it on eBay for $249 and noticed it when they saw (more than) usual orders, so corrected it to $259.
Guess they're not desperate to clear all their stock yet. :)
The profit margin on Lenovo S10E's sold 6-8months ago by MLN were approximately $20 at $286.

  • ok done some research and these things are slow, not this particular model but netbooks in general, well slow when u run multiple apps on them or having more than 3 windows open at the same time 2 gigs do not make that much of a difference 2 secs faster booting time based on a video i watched, if u want it for email, chat, basic stuff go for it,if ur planning to get it for uni save some more money and get ur self a decent laptop like the lenovo deal few days ago, thats just my 2 cents.

    • +2

Depends on what you are doing at uni. If you're just typing, emailing, watching lectures and opening PDF's/PPT's it'll do the job nicely - especially with a 1366x768 screen. One review complemented the quality of the 95% keyboard on this HP model.

If Vista is too slow, take your pick from MeeGo, Jolicloud, Ubuntu Netbook Edition "2D" and other OS distributions.

  • Does the price include delivery..

    • on the website yes

  • +7

    so homo raised price

  • +1

Shame its a single core CPU - I bought one anyway - is entry level netbook pricing but very solid build quality. As long as you're happy with a gutless CPU you'll be fine - will drop Ubuntu or Win7 Pro onto it - would suck with Vista on it. Nice buy.

  • +5

I would stay away from OrangeIT. I bought a HP mini 210 from them last month and having a hard time getting the case they promised. They don't reply to emails (blamed water damage) and when they do leave a message after I opened a paypal claim it's very vague and non-committal. I have only received 1 response but no case or money back. They haven't made it clear if they will send me a case or money. Hopefully paypal can step in and I get some money back and I can get a sleeve.

      • That's after I emailed them 3 times. I only resorted to paypal because OrangeIT never replied. I guess that's why paypal have a system, where customers feel short changed by retailers. OrangeIT sold me, and I ordered a netbook with case. I didn't get what I ordered. I would have been happy if they sent out the case, no questions asked. I understand if they forgot. Not sure where you got $10 from. That's the price quoted too, but on their website the cheapest case is $18+postage.

  • I can confirm this CPU supports 64bit :)

    • You actually tested it, or just looked up Intel's website like everyone else in the world?

      • +2

I purchased it and I have installed it :)

  • oh btw no chance this would have hdmi out right? only vga?

    • Right.

    • VGA only:(

  • Does anyone know where you can get a similar netbook to this (10.1 inch screen, 160GB hard disk) with windows 7 for under $300?

    • emachine em350 or the acer alike
