  • Good to know. Thx OP

    • If your store showing hundreds still available but cannot find one at the shelves near the lighting section, look for the other area, its usually hidden somewhere.

For those unaware these are Eneloop Pro's rebagged, there is a YouTube video floating around that tested the capacity and it confirmed they are the same

Can these be charged using Eneloop's charger

      • +7

Yes, the Eneloop charger can also be used to charge non Eneloop batteries. It's just a battery charger.

        • Great thanks, I was just worried the current draw may be different and may short them

        • I never know when my batteries are charged with my Eneloop charger. The light is always green.

        • @Overproof: It's like a 16 hour charge cycle.

      • Don't even use that charger. Plenty of cheap smart chargers online that'll make these batteries last longer.

        • Is it because the charger is bad or becasue it is expensive compared to others, I have got an eneloop charger that came woth the bundle :(

        • +3

@kamban: If you already have the Eneloop charger, just use it. No need to buy another charger unless you want more functions or faster charge.

        • @kamban: I use an Eneloop one myself with Ladda. No problem with it.

        • @edfoo: Cheers mate

        • @Smigit: Great :)

        • @kamban: they're usually just fast chargers that don't have the optimal charging and termination methods.

        • Any links for some cheap smart chargers?

        • @ranagade: https://www.google.com.au/search?q=liitokala Any of these should suffice, Or XTar or Nitecore are good as well.

        • Noob question…..does it actually matter what charger you use as long as it works with Ni-MH? I have an old Sony BC-CSQ3 quick-charge one that outputs at 1.2V 640mA x4 / 1280mA x2.

I read on Eneloop101.com that as long as the quick charge isn't significantly higher than the batter rating it should be okay, but also it shouldn't be too slow. For AA PRO this is between 700 and 2500mA so the Sony charger might not be fast enough?

    • +1

      Rebadged?

      • :-D Yep

    • What about the AAA’s ?

Rated for 500mah which is pretty low and they only took 450 in my charger , a little disappointing compaered to enveloops ratings

      • +1

You might have the gold ones? The white ones are rated 900mAh for AAA and both AA and AAA are always above the ratings on my MAHA charger.

    • +1

My friend is a photographer. He told me that ikea battery was much more better than Eneelop. He use the flash everyday and he experienced this

      • +6

His first mistake was buying Eneelops, clearly knockoffs.

  • +1

    Isn't delivery $128…?

    • Pickup is probably the preferred option.

      • i choose C&C and get $20 service fee

        • Don't click and collect IKEA unless you are in Tasmania or using a goget or similar.

        • +1

@josho9: Half the time the batteries are next to the checkout anyway, so it’s probably quicker not doing C&C.

        • +1

@Smigit: Good point - if the batteries are all you need, just walk in from the exit rather than working your way through the store.

        • +1

          @josho9:

But thats half the "fun" - getting mad as hell for the stupid maze, because you just walked past the shortcut between displays and didn't notice.

        • @quog: last Australia day, on the way to the beach we decided to get a cheap brekky at Ikea Springwood. So did every other man and his dog so we quickly bailed but fell into the intricate Swedish web of homewares. Deadset took us 20 minutes to get out I reckon, and that was with explicit instructions to keep eyes off the merchandise. Lesson learned.

        • @Hinee:
I usually find the emergency exit. Sure the alarm sounds but you get out 20min faster.
I then drive up to meet the mrs near the formal exit.

  • Aaa?

  • NiMH batteries?

    Sweet.

These are a great cheap way to turn "cheap solar lights" into "all night runners".

    • thats what i did. thy are good but never get charged full in these solar products tho.

    • How do you do that? Most solar lights I see have built in LiFePo4 batteries charged by a solar panel, and the ones I have also with battery compartments don't charge the batts in them (and probably best they don't! I wouldn't expect proper NiMH charging…) but yeah they sure last A LOT longer with 800mAh than the 100mAh or whatever in the lithium cell.

      • +1

My solar LED christmas lights had a single AA battery inside - probably depends on the specific light

  • +1

Cool looks like they are available in SA/WA - but they didn't used to be?

    • +4

Used to be a separate franchise, but now they are the same. Haven't seen it reported anywhere.

      • It's not still a separate franchise? Also haven't seen that anywhere.

    • +1

I think they were always available but were not (until now?) discounted.

    • they were always available in WA, got some last year.

      • +2

I thin leTintin was referring to the price. WA prices have always been $10, we were never able to get the promotions available in the Eastern states.

        • ah yeah perhaps

  • +2

Nice one! i've been meaning to pick a few packs of these for the xiomi mi night lights. Procrastinating FTW!!

  • Looks like I'm going to Ikea this weekend.

    • +5

      For their breakfast meals?

      • +1

        is that an invite?

    • Good luck, many enter and few leave.

      • If you make it out from Ikea alive, you are qualified as a Maze Runner :)

  • Where can I get charger please?

    • +7

      Ikea

    • If you're patient enough for a month + delivery look at a nitecore or xtar charger from gearbest or zapals.

      • +1

Or save some extra cash and get a LiitoKala.

        • Xtar and Opal have faster charging options for those that want speed, but yes LiitoKala is a solid budget option.

    • You could get a good charger that’ll refresh old batteries. I use the MAHA something, wry expensive.

    • you can get a Varta charge + 4 AAs for $30 at Bunnings
      https://www.bunnings.com.au/varta-aa-aaa-lcd-battery-charger…

Pity they don't sell the Varta rapid charger any more. I've got a 2 cell charger, does 2 x900mA AAA in ~15mins, and 2 x 2100mA AA in ~20mins

      • That's a good way to quickly kill the cells.

        • Apparently so. Alas no one told my cells that. I've got my original varta AA's 2100 which i got with it about 6yrs ago. I charge them often and they still work a treat.

I'd rather 30min charging batteries that last only 5yrs rather then 4-6hr chargimg that last 10yrs. That way i don't really need a lot of spares.

      • Don't get variable lol, trash.

  • Thoughts on a cheap, good quality charger? I'm assuming the Ikea ones are no good…

    • Why do you assume that? all their other chargers and electronics are over engineered and top quality.

Also, NiMH, shockingly easy to charge.

    • Why would they not be good?

    • +5

A good charger is one that has -dV/dT charge termination. That one feature alone makes it a "smart" charger. If a charger has this feature, 99% of the time it'll say "-dV/dT" or "delta V" charge termination on the box.

But -dV/dT termination only works if the charge takes four hours or less (with the exception of Nitecore chargers, which use a different technique, and still successfully use -dV/dT termination). Lately there are some chargers available that say they have -dV/dT termination, but also say they take ten hours or longer to charge. Don't buy these, with that slow a charge the batteries won't show the -dV/dT effect, so they are essentially "dumb" chargers.

There are many good chargers to choose from, the main difference is what other features they have, like:
      - a nice LCD display which tells you each battery's capacity, instead of a single LED which changes colour when charging is complete
      - selectable charge current (important if you have to charge low-capacity batteries, like the cheaper Ikea 1000mAh AA batteries)
      - the ability to test batteries, and "refresh" older batteries that have lost capacity
      - some can be powered from a car's cigarette lighter socket
      - faster charging (2-3 hours is best, but some chargers e.g. some Nitecore chargers, can take up to 8 hours to charge four batteries)

To know if your existing charger is a smart charger, fully charge a battery, take it out for ten minutes, and then put it on charge again. If the charger says "end of charge" within ten minutes, it's almost certainly a smart charger. A "dumb" charger will just keep on charging the battery until the pre-set time limit is up, and the battery will likely get very hot. Heat permanently damages batteries.

      • Heat permanently damages batteries.

It also causes very loud bangs, pops, sizzles and potentially fires.

    • From above - look at a nitecore I or d range or xtar charger from gearbest or zapals.

    • I have had the $15 ladda battery charger from ikea for a while and like it.
Best of all, it actually stops charging when the AAA/AA are full.

      Review: https://lygte-info.dk/review/Review%20Charger%20Ikea%20Ladda…

And then I had to start recharging 18650 so expanded my collection with LiitoKala lii-100 (office) and lii-500 (home).

  • Can you use an eneloop charger for these then?

    • Yes, the Eneloop charger can also be used to charge non Eneloop batteries. It's just a battery charger.

      • That I did not know. But how do I know how long to charge these batteries for then? Doesn't the length of time need to be precise?

        • +2

If it's a 'dumb' charger (just charges for a set amount of time) then don't use it, quickest way to ruin the battery.

If it's a 'smart' charger then it'll automatically cut off power once the battery is charged (some are better than others and monitor different aspects to know when the battery is fully charged). I picked up the LiitoKala Lii-500 for about $20 delivered 6 or so months ago. It's brilliant.

Google the model number of your charger (or post it here) to see if it's a smart or dumb charger.

So are these prices available in VIC? Can I buy them in the store and scan my Family card to get the discount?

Not seeing Click and Collect available in Vic.

    • +1

I believe so, C&C is available at Richmond and Springvale so it would be the same pricing in store.

      • Are you sure? I go to check out and I cannot see either VIC stores as pickup locations.

        • Yep I tested it on the product page under the check store stock. I tested both Richmond and Springvale and they're coming up as in stock for AA and AAA..Not sure why the checkout isn't showing the same result?

        • @doweyy: Hi OP, I can't click and collect at Springvale, it doesn't give me the option in the drop down menu

        • +1

          @TwiztaKev:

Yeah I can see that now too, they just mustn't offer C&C in VIC. Plenty of stock in store however it seems so just walking in would be easier. A user below confirmed that Richmond had plenty of stock.

        • @doweyy: Thanks OP! Long time fan - love your work.

        • @TwiztaKev:

Thank you for saying that, I really appreciate it :)

        • @doweyy: can confirm Vic doesnt have C&C yet..oh the many arguments ive had with them over the past 2 years…

Alternatively, Aldi stock the Activ LSD AA and AAA batteries, which are very comparable in performance to Eneloops and are a similar price to these ones.

    • The Aldi batteries are cheaper, $5.99 per pack of four, for both AAA and AA sizes. I've found them to work well, but I haven't used them in anything demanding like a camera flash.

Beware though: Aldi also sell similar-looking alkaline batteries, also called "Activ", and the NiMh batteries aren't always available at every checkout. If you send someone else to get the Aldi NiMh batteries for you, they may mistakenly come back with alkalines.

    • My experience with the Aldi batteries hasn't been great.

The LADDAs are sought after because they're thought to be essentially the same as Eneloop Pro or Sanyo XX batteries. (Rumoured to be made in the same factory and probably to the same spec).

      • The Aldi's consistently test about 100mAh less than the Laddas. They still aren't "bad" batteries in my experience but I wouldn't think they are equivalent either from my testing.

Overall I'd say both are quite reasonable given the Aldi's are cheaper.

As for longevity it'll just be time will tell …

        • I was talking about the longevity rather than the capacity. They just don't seem to hold as much charge over time and quickly become much lower capacity.

  • good found doweyy

    • +9

I didn't know he was lost.

    • He's a sneaky bugger

  • I bought both AA and AAA last time. They seem to discharge very fast!

  • +3

Plenty in stock at Richmond Victoria gardens ikea . I’m here now

    • Thanks for the heads up, but damn it, I went through 2 mazes to get these tonight.

The top floor carpark where Ikea is was closed off, so had to go into the regular car park and find my way to the top, then the usually Ikea maze, good thing they have entrances from the market place now.

If anyone wants to use the warp zones(shortcuts). once in the market place, take the first warp zone to section 14 which is the lighting area where the batteries are. then take the next warp zone from 14 to 20, that will take you close to the end of the market place and the start of the self serve area.

  • wait.. werent the good batteries from Ikea gold rather than white?

    • The gold coloured ones are lower capacity higher cycles e.g. 1000mAh 1500 cycles for the AA batteries.

      • Not sure many rechargable batteries would be fully discharged & recharged 500 times (this would take ~5 yrs if batteries are flattened/recharged weekly) let alone 1500 times, so I think this would be a false economy.

Also I read somewhere that better to go with the higher capacity units (ie 2400+ mAH vs 1000 mAh) as they have better capacity (~2.5x), hold their voltage longer and can discharge at higher amps.
