The Rabbitohs and Eels are in the top 3 for highest memberships in NRL, as are Richmond and Collingwood in the AFL. So a very accurate comparison IMO..

Even more so in AFL. QLD and NSW AFL club members are in bulk interstate. Brisbane Lions average home crowd is less than half their membership count while Broncos average over their membership

I could watch a sunday amateur game of either of those sports and arguably enjoy it as much, if not more. Attendance does not guarantee increased satisfaction.
Meanwhile no one outside of three cities in the world cares about AFL. 80% of the AFL universe is Melbourne, even if AFL had a crack at rep footy Victoria vs the rest of the world would still be a one sided affair.
True, but that's still one more city than Rugby League. Hang on, I'm forgetting the Rugby League "World" Cup. Gee I hope we beat Papua New Guinea, Tonga and the Cook Islands! You can't even field more than one team in Brisbane. Having said all that, I find the AFL equally stupid and frankly unwatchable.
