I just want to look at the cover illustrations.

  • Can someone please give feedback for this compared to NBT Nuggets or other online course websites like LinkdIn. Thanks

      • No quizzes, exams, or labs
      • The most coverage of all training platforms, tens of other content producers put their material on this platform.
      • Good Android app
      • Variety of materials; books, video courses, live webinars, online tutorials
      • Some books come with online quizzes, which are accessible if you have the book.

    • I don't have experience with those other sites, but I find the most useful part of Safari is the quick access to full books (particularly from the O'Reilly catalogue). Particularly if you're working in a technical IT field it can be very useful.

Are the books DRM free? If so, what formats?

        • Nope - they're available in-browser, or through a proprietary Android/iOS app. There's no download option in the current version of Safari.

        • -1

@ctd: That's a pain. Given how easily one can find PDF copies of O'Reilly books, you'd think they'd value user experience over ineffective DRM.

I tend to do a lot of my reading when I've got no Internet access, so this is deal breaker unfortunately.

        • @kapone: packtpub give you tokens to spend on books which are drm free downloads. You can use the tokens even if your subscription has expired.

        • @kapone:

You can download the books to your 'queue'. I mainly find the value in that I can find four or five books on a topic, which might have different approaches and levels of detail.

  • Do you know if the access through ACM is for the same content as the regular Safari subscription?

I've seen in the past that access through University libraries etc. only provide a subset of the full catalogue available.

I was an ACM member three years ago and the Safari membership at that time was a subset of the full subscription.

      • Thanks. I'm going to guess it probably still is, then.

        • Turns out it has changed. See below.

      • Can you please elaborate "was a subset of the full subscription" part?

          Good news everyone!

Since June 2017, ACM Professional members have had access to the entire Safari catalogue: https://www.acm.org/articles/bulletins/2017/june/safari-lear…

It's changed since I ceased membership.

        • @ChiefAJ:

          Thanks for finding that!

Well in that case it might make sense to go with ACM membership (on the presumption they don't end this benefit).

    • My other question: If you subscribed to ACM. do also have access to the Safari mobile app (Queue) and access the full content from the safari website https://www.safaribooksonline.com/?
I remember I join membership one of a library, I can get access to some content from Safari Online, but I redirected to the very old safari website and I can't access the queue app at all.

      • +1

Yes, you can use the Queue app with full access to the Safari catalogue

  • Anywhere to find a list of the topics/books without signing up?

  • +1

For those who can't afford, the Library can be the Genesis of your learning.

  • ACM also gives a special rate for the underdeveloping country. If you are a resident of one of that country and you have a credit card from that country, I guess you could get that benefit.
    https://services.acm.org/public/qj/proflevel/countryListing.…

  • They offer free 1 week membership, no need of credit card

  • It coming $284 for 1 year for me in AUD
