Arcosteel 6pce Knife Block Set $17.50 (Was $50) @ Woolworths

930

Was looking for some cheap/decent knife block for my teenage kids to practice to be the next masterchef, and I don't want them to touch my expensive yet cherished global knifes. I found this in Woolworths and think it's not too bad for the price under $20.

Not sure if important, the labels on the box said German steel, Ice hardened and blah year guarantee.

Copy from WW site:
Product Details
Quality 1.4116 German steel knives, ice hardened for strength, taper ground finish for superior sharpness, set comprises 20cm bread knife, 17cm chef knife, 12cm utility knife, 8cm paring knife, kitchen scissors in a rubber wood block

Upvote for being brave enough to give your teenage kids knives.

    • Haha yeah same +1 for the story alone.

Thanks OP, I might get this :)

This or the car. Oh wait.. is that how they will get a car soon? I was wondering what's with the evil laughs.

My 12 year old has his own knives in the kitchen … jnr masterchef has inspired kids to cook ….

No major injuries so far, knows to keep fingers tips tucked behind knuckles, etc.

Got him his own set so he doesn't ruin my set learning to sharpen.

I don't suppose you can really go wrong for $17.50, but I would go with some Kiwi Brand Knives from your closest oriental supermarket. Cheap (I think I paid $4 for a 6" nigiri knife) and very easy to keep a very sharp edge. I have all sorts of knives (Victorinox, Wusthof, full set of Zwilling JA Henckels) and my Kiwis are still the most used.

    • +1

Yes, Kiwi is cheaper, but I wanted something thicker so those kids doesn't need me to drive them to hospital every now and then. I worry about the thin blade might snap as my kids are not like other good kids.

      • +3

In my experience you're sooner to cut yourself with a dull knife than a sharp one and unless they're chopping bones there's little chance of them snapping, YMMV however

        • +1

That's assuming you're also careful, which is very easy to do with a sharp knife! Kids are far less careful and can easily cause accidental injury with a sharp knife.

Adults should DEFINITELY use sharp knives.

        • i was at the in laws on the weekend and i broke a big knife cutting a cheese block. tad awkward

          @Shwayne:

I love those knives at the Asian groceries of gift shops too. Thin blade, sharp edge, precision. Very little force is needed. I even sharpen them almost every time I use them with the sharpening stone.

I do have deep cuts on my fingers, all occurred when I was a child (growing up in a country village in Vietnam). But I still think that a thin blade is still better. Cooking/eating to me is a type of arts, and knives are your tools.

        • @chriskq:

It's ok you already married your wife, they can't say no now lol

        • Yep, sharper knives are actually safer, since you use less force to cut with, so more control with less chance of slipping. Also I've had cheaper knives (not kiwis) that tend to cut in a slight sideways curve which is less than ideal!

I will buy this for the block.

    • Not the free 15 cent bag on offer at Woolies in some states.

  • Rubber wood block?

    • +1

Nah, looks like a wood wood block.

      • How much wood is in a wood wood block if a wood blocks made of wood?

    • Updated details from site, yes it is rubber wood block. Haven't have time to look at that thing yet.

      https://www.daf.qld.gov.au/business-priorities/forestry/usin…

Its "rubberwood", and you see it also as "hevea". Its a fast-growing hardwood suited to Asian tropical climates. You see it in cheap imported furniture.

  • How can this item be half price? $50 to $17.50 is not half.

    • +2

On the website "better than half price" and "half price" mean the same thing.

I don't know might need MathNerd to confirm :D (pity he's still got 3 days in the box..)

      • Glad you are not my accountant.

  • Nice if nation wide clearance. My local store was still selling it for $24.50 yesterday arvo.

    • It was in the clearance section of my local store. It's also on their website so it's definitely nationwide.

  • Thanks Op bargain picked up 2.

  • Thanks OP, just picked up a set as well… Decent set for the price.

  • Guys reckon these are better than the wiltshire set from good guys deal? Might get a set if the local has em at this price…

  • +1

Definitely better than Wiltshire .I have a set them also.

  • Saw a lot of them last week at my local wws at24.5 . Today I went to 2 different wws, no stock. Seems popular

  • Only available at larger WW, it seems. Not stocked at Randwick, for instance.

  • Literally Just bought one. Good Price for what their worth. Thanks OP!

  • my local has 13 but the tag says $35 :'(

    • +1

Pretty sure it'll scan at $17.50 since that's what's on their website.

    • As per Eug's comments, it will scan at $17.50. The WW I went was showing 25% off, but it scanned $17.50.
I haven't try out the set yet myself as it's a gift to my son and not good if I use it first (even for testing). I asked him to try it out, but he wanted to take photos first… what's wrong with kids these days.

    • Update: as of Wednesday they changed the tag to $17.5o so i picked a set up with a few tubs of $5 halo top. Havn't opened knives, have opened halo top. Still several of each at the tuggadome in ACT.

  • Got one! Plenty left in Charlestown, Newcastle. Go get yourself one!

  • Bought mine in Bondi Junction today. Thanks OP, and all who recommended it.

  • My mom liked mine and went to get a set at the same store in Bondi Jct (NSW), but now they're out of it. The deal may have expired.

  • Dude at the store said they're scheduled to get more tmw. Not sure if at the same price, though.
