Nice. How do you get a temporary government email address? Asking for a friend…

    • +11

Probably the same way you get yourself an ASIO file.

      • I knew lil Johnny's eyebrows were more than just decoration

      • hey I got one of those, where is my gov email address?

    • Get a temporary government job?

  • +1

Targeted for gov.au people. damm fbi!!

    • +1

Anyone tried it with state gov emails?

  • not that i can use it, but if you have the lowest status on your Qantas then this is practically useless?

    • +8

Yes. They're presumably trying to flip government employees who are locked into Qantas through status. Clever targeting.

      • +2

Except Gov employees aren't really meant to be locked into anyone.
They have to pick the lowest practical fare of the day and the policy very specifically mentions they can't preference '… a particular airline or aircraft type, access to airline lounges or accumulating airline reward and loyalty points (including status credits)'
        https://www.finance.gov.au/procurement/travel-and-related-se…

        Technically at least…. ;)

        • Not only that, but govt employees don’t book personally, they book through the department. No FF points are awarded; the airline trades that off for cheaper fares

  • +1

So this is matching your Velocity frequent flyer status to the same level as your Qantas frequent flyer status if you have a government email?

    • Yes

  • Hilton do the same thing if you have a status with another hotel.

  • Loophole around the Australian Government APS Ethics Policy as it is only status and not points.
    https://www.apsc.gov.au/sect-410-using-commonwealth-resource…

    • Not sure it is really a loophole because status credits are still a part of the FF program.
But this particular offer may not be an issue.

      • +1

Most departments allow status credits but not FF points. Most have policies supporting it.

QBT, the Department of Finance’s travel panel provider for WoAG, even has a section to input your FF numbers and it will automatically add to your booking and attract status credits but not FF points.

You used to get into lounges without status as long as you had the right fare type but this has since been removed.

  • Do Velocity actually check up on the status that you have with Qantas?

    • Well you have to provide proof.

      • +1

Anyone got a screenshot of what Qantas shows you when you're top tier?

    • +1

I doubt they would or even be able to get that info from Qantas. Qantas aren't likely to share customer information with their no1 competition would they? Would make it very open to photo-shopping.

      • +1

        That’s what I’m thinking.

    • I did this a few years ago and they wanted a photo of my Qantas gold card

      • If you read the post you have to provide a scanned copy or photo of either your card or last statement.

    • +2

Because they need to travel. Status doesn't cost the person using it anything. Do you even know what FF programs are about? Also don't think government fares are the same as normal commercial fares.

    • +6

Because they need to fly to meet with stakeholders, for meetings etc. Flying regularly for work (either private or public) stops being fun quickly.

      • As someone that lives in Canberra, it’s pretty incredible how the population swells and accomodation is booked out across town when parliament is sitting compared to when it isn’t.

    • And status can often save the employer money e.g en employee can often check-in later for their flight and get express path access (allows them to attend meetings longer), they often get airline lounge access (regardless of class of travel) so they can eat without inuring an additional travel meal claim (and some airlines allow 'arrivals access' so when you land you can grab a snack / meal or freshen up (showers) or wifi for files updates, free seat selection (saving money), better seat selection (sitting towards front of plane means getting to a meeting sooner with more time at the meeting or getting home sooner after a longer day). Same goes for hotels and status with lounge access.

      • I know (at least in some situations in the private sector) already eating doesn't always mean they won't claim the meals… per diem comes to mind.

LOL guess I wasn't being clear. I'm not disputing that they should have status so much as why they fly so much to accrue the status in the first place.

  • +1

    Worked! Thank OP.

Signed up via my personal Attorney General .gov email address, and all my info!

    • You can announce that publicly? Guess they must have changed the terms of employment

  • Damn was hoping this was the other way around

    • -3

Not going to happen, this is part of introduction of Virgin airline as part of gov travel. Used to be just Qantas

      • +3

It hasn't been just Qantas for a very long time (at least since 2010, probably earlier). Virgin has been available for many years but uptake seems to have been poor and so periodically Virgin offers incentives to try to convince more public servants to choose them when booking travel.
The most recent travel arrangements came into effect in mid-2016.
        https://www.finance.gov.au/procurement/travel-and-related-se…

    • +2

You want to use your Virgin status to become a government worker?

  • +2

Is this also for state government or only federal?

    • .gov email address

    • It says Federal but I'd give it a crack, there's no harm in trying and if you don't the answer will definitely be no.

  • +5

What about Qantas matching Velocity FF status??

  • Is it a way to get more points or is there anything special to it?
Does that make you go on statuts faster?

Sorry, never looked into that velocity thing and I am a bit confused, thank for any kind soul who will bother to explain

    • No it gives you the same status as what you would already have with Qantas
its a ploy by virgin to try and capture travellers that usally fly Qantas to swap over without losing any status.

    • -3

As explain above, gov only used Qantas till recently, this just to promote Virgin to use as gov related travels.
PS: good for competition and save taxpayers money!

      • “this just to promote Virgin to use as gov related traveIs”

I imagine it’s more to capture the staffs personal travel so that they’ll consider Virgin even if work flys Qantas. Chances are most of the workers being flown are being assigned an airline and flight and won’t have a say themselves in which one they pick as long as the flight gets them to where they need to be in time.

    • It will help grant lounge access. And more ff points for personal travel (no points provided on gov fares).

  • Just wanted to add that Qantas lounges are unfortunately far better. I’d consider carefully before switching allegiance.

    • +1

      Not always. I’d rate them

Domestic: Qantas Club < Virgin Lounge < Qantas Business

The kerbside entry to the VA lounge in Sydney is particularly handy.

  • Don't forget, Qantas gives you One World Access. Virgin Australia is only apart of the Virgin Family, as well as other airlines (Singapore and Etihad I think)

  • +1

Will my banning from Qantas also be transferred? :)

  • +3

If only this worked the other way. I have Gold virgin but only basic Qantas…

  • +2

I’ll try with my .g0v email and let you know.

  • Wonder if they provide a soft land back to gold once your platinum status finishes.

  • Anyone know with status match do you need to provide both from and back of card?

    • The back of the card is a credit card so probably not.

      • Lol fair enough. Don’t want Virgin emplpyees to be raking up Qantas points from credit card now do we.
