A Strange Car Blocked My Driveway, What Should I Do?

Hi guys, I’m looking for an advice where a strange car was blocking in the middle of my driveway and the next door’s drive way. I took some photos but don't know how to attach them here. I also noted the plate number just in case it will repeat. The strange thing is there were many empty spaces that the car could use.

It happened before when my next door came and asked if the car that blocking his driveway was belong to me. But this time a strange car is blocking both of our driveway. I’m not sure if it is the same car that blocked my neighbor’s driveway.

Luckily, this morning I parked my car outside and I was rush to work, so I didn’t bother to find out who parked the car there. My question is what should I do if that car blocking my driveway again?

Thank you in advance.

Get familiar with the car then it won't be strange anymore. 😉

Put a note under the windscreen wiper to tell them off?

  • +4

    Call a Tow Truck

      who pay ?

If you call a scrap trader, they'll pick it up for free. Some will even pay you $200!

        • +7

          need docos/ID , i guess

else i'll be getting $200 for every junk spotted parking over kerb

        • +8

          @phunkydude:

          need docos/ID , i guess

You should, but based on my experience (same size: 1), I didn't.

          I don't think it's the most reputable industry…

        • +1

@Scrooge McDuck: I didn't when I got some cars removed, but, they were obviously old cars ready to scrap.

      • OP pays.

    • why? whats a tow truck going to do?

      Try calling the council.

      • Tow the car?

        • that's theft, you will end up facing charges for randomly towing a car from a public road.

  • +33

Call the council rangers to come and have it towed away if it really is blocking a driveway or write an infringement.

    • if the car is not on the road, the council won't care

      • +4

I assumed it was on the road, blocking OP's driveway. If it's actually on OP's driveway, you're right, OP should just call the tow truck directly.

      • They will love it, they get to fine $126 + Towing fee of $425 + $19 per day in storage.

But this depends on your council, that's south melbourne.

you already did the correct action, by creating a forum post and asking ozbargainers.

    good job op.

    • +31

Hey… I’m still waiting for my badly drawn picture before I make any comments…

Next will be a question of life or any question that involves "I am afraid to make my own decision so I will let OzBargain polls to decide for me".

When cars block my driveway, I move all my heavy gardening supplies and bins behind the car thinking it was here for a pickup. It's a long and slow process. Once I did all my bicycle maintenance. I had to disassemble quite a lot of parts, over and over, bits everywhere. Usually the people who block are self important and in some arbitrary rush. Let them come to the conclusion it's not worth it. Council are slow already and somewhat hamstrung, so I wouldn't expect action.

    • haha best way, but the car "might be" right near the street so it would be better the the ranger to deal with.

  • Thanks for feedback guys

  • +2

Happened to my work mate whose car was parked in. He called the police who tracked down the owner to a few houses down.

  • Sounds like I should call the police if that car blocking my driveway again. I hope the police will prompt action as your prompt response as I need to get out of the driveway to work.

    • +25

      Don’t call 000

Call your local police station who can look up the owner and call them themselves. They’ll basically say “move it in10 minutes and we won’t call a tow truck at their (owners) expense”

They won’t give you their details. If they say there’s nothing they can do then ask for their manager.

      • +96

Manager? It’s a police station, not a KFC

        • +8

          ask for their Sergeant*

        • +39

          @R-Man:

          Sergeant Colonel?

        • +36

Speak with Sergeant Sanders. He'll know what to do.

      Wiki says:

A Woverine is a mutant who possesses animal-keen senses, enhanced physical capabilities, powerful regenerative ability known as a healing factor, and three retractable claws in each hand.

      D.I.Y. ?

    • +2

The car might be gone, but OP might also find his house wrapped in a dozen layers of police tape……….

        • Nooh, nooh… we need more lemon pledge.

    • -1

      no consequence ?

        • Might be someone living down the street from you, and gets your whole street closed off for a week…….

Use your whipper snipper/lawnmower right next to the car. Remember to do some redecorating first in the area, I hear small pebbles are the rage these days.

Hey Wolverine, have you lost your super powers or something? Why are you using your brain instead of your brawn all of a sudden? Just do what you normal do best, claw it into threads!

    • +6

Not Wolverine, just a distance relative, the somewhat softer woverine.

  • +24

Stick a 'For Sale' sign to it, list a price that seems too good to be true for the model of car it is and list the phone number of someone you don't like ^_^
Better yet, list your local council parking and infringements department number

    • +16

Don't forget to list it on gumtree for the $20 EOFY reward.

      • +10

"Car for sale - I lost keys - so if you can open it, it's yours"

Just leave a fiddy in an unmarked envelope.

        • Ha ha! Brilliant!!…..and EVIL..

  • +12

I am interested in identifying the strange car so I did a google search. Which one is it?

  • +2

Attach a cable to your car and tow it onto road. Then call council and say it is blocking your driveway

  • 2 of these will do send the right message - 1 under passenger front wheel & the other under passenger rear wheel. Best 80 cents you will spend

  • Those damn red Holden sedans!

  • +1

Start stripping parts (eg the exterior mirrors) and put them on EBay for sale.

  • +1

Let down all four tyres to flat. They won’t do it again.

    • +5

Or maybe leave a note letting them know that his tyres would fit your car and you are willing to swap some bricks for his tyres. If he agrees, leave car there again.

  • +5

When it happened to me once, I called the local police station (not via 000) and a couple of cops came, broke into the car and moved it.

    • +4

Our guys took 20 minutes to respond when the neighbour had cornered someone breaking into their property; I think they would be too busy to move a car for me.

    • +10

You sure that was the cops? I'm just picturing a couple of car thieves breaking into and driving away with the car, all the while wondering why someone was just watching and letting them.

      • +12

Either way the car was gone - not the posters problem anymore.

        • +3

          True. Can't argue with results.

      • +2

They looked like cops. They were in uniform. They didn't drive it away they just rolled it forward. Fortunately there was space in front of the car to move it to.

I was surprised at how easily they got into the car - they appeared to have their own key that just worked.

        • +18

Sounds like an unmarked police car was just parked at your house :)

        • +21

They looked like cops. They were in uniform.

          Could've been strippers.

        • +3

@Scrooge McDuck: The best kind of cops

  • I would block it in with something heavy and difficult to move out of the way; then setup a camera to capture the fun.

    • +9

For poor parking in a shopping centre, cable tie a shopping trolley to the door handle. Something similar in the driveway might work.

      • +1

Cause I just have cable ties lying around.

        • +3

Don't most people? Would've thought more people would have some random box in the laundry with super glue, cable ties, assorted nails, duct tape, an old screwdriver and a few other random things in it.

        • You could get some and leave them laying around. Keep a couple in the car too.

      • But you can remove cable ties with almost anything, you could probably remove it with the car key.

        • +2

I know that, but it takes some doing unless you have a knife/scissors, especially if the tie is tight.

It is not designed to prevent removal, merely be an inconvenience for a few minutes.

  • -1

just print out the photo you took of their number plate and car and say if they block your drive way again you'll be taking action and calling the cops on them

  • +17

Thank you so much for all of your comments. I now know what I have to do. I may put a note under the windscreen wiper saying 'Woverine was here' and signiture as three retractable claws. Seriously, I will report it to police and hope that car will be towed away. 😊 Thanks again all.

Dirty Mike and the boys were here. - The Other Guys

    • +6

Make sure the note doesn't fly away: secure it down with superglue

  • +6

Download the app SNAP SEND SOLVED, take a few photos including of the rego plate and let the app send it to your local council. They may wonder how they are getting so many infringements by post but they will get the (very expensive) message.

    • Wow that app looks great!
      Thank you!

  • +5

This could be a stolen car. Contact police to ensure it is not

  • +5

In NSW? First check the rego online: council loves towing unregistered cars. If you're feeling adventurous, remove the plates and drop them to RMS to expedite the towing process.

Police will probably try to call the owner (less resources than attending in person), then maybe issue a ticket. It is unlikely they'll touch the car. If they're busy, obviously more serious calls will get priority over this stuff.

  • +1

    What should you do????!

Go out and stand by the strange car, with toothpick dangling in your mouth and a tire iron in hand, find a comfortable spot and casually lean yourself on the front quarter bonnet,

    wait for the driver

    • +8

Don't forget your leather jacket and brill cream.

  • -3

$5 worth of fuel and a box of matches

  • +4

Just put a grain of sand in each of the tyre caps. When he drives about 5km, all the tyres will be deflated; away from your house

    • This is diabolical. Like holy damn that's downright evil.

    • How does that work?

      • +4

        It doesn’t

        • It does as the valve been pushed down and release the air.

        • +5

@chenrenchun: A single grain of sand? resting exactly between the gap and the valve stem? I don't think so.

        • @Burnertoasty: maybe rice?

    • +1

Except that it (even if this were to work) would start letting air out of the tyres immediately. It's more likely that all the tyres would just be flat when he returned.

  • +1

Tow strap and drag it down the road

    • +10

…and my corolla now has a burnt out clutch and bald front tyres and the landcruiser is still there.
