  • Can anyone comment on whether this is any good?

    • For a basic viewer and not fuzzy about features, this can do.

From the image of it, it sounds like MIO style map and even showing bluetooth icon, if it contain any one of this, it is certainly a bargain for 179$.

  • what is a MIO style map? Does it have voice instructions?
    Thanks

  • Yes it has voice directions. Mio is another brand….and yes the graphical interface looks similar. Looks like it supports DIVX movies….etc….thats something you won't find on tomtom or the other major brands.

Would be interesting to see if it suppots bluetooth…..there is a BT icon on the screen image, but no indication of the feature in the spec list. Bargain of the year if it does.

  • Just bought it today. The learning curve on the route 66 (Navteq navigate 7) software is a little steep, the GUI and menu is not really intuitive. The CD setup didn't seem to like to install on my laptop ("Failed to load DLL: R66RInstall"). Also there's a discrepancy between the Aldi catalog and the box (Catalog mentions 512MB built in memory and the box mentions 256MB - I haven't found a menu option yet that will allow me to find out one way or the other). I'm trying to get the latest software from the website. I'll spend some more time fiddling with it but if I can't get it working to my liking I'm sending it back to Aldi.

Edit: Oh, and there's no mention of Bluetooth anywhere in the menu, box, or user guide.

Edit2: I'm not sure if this is standard but the route66 map doesn't support "click and drag". Also www.66.com didn't have any copies of the setup files available for download (I'm not even sure what I need it for, map updates perhaps?). The GPS supposedly runs Windows CE but I can't find a way to get to the underlying operating system. I think I'll learn my lesson and buy one of the more reputable brands instead. Off to Aldi I go. :(

    • you could return it back to ALDI (which is somewhat better then ebay/online buys)

btw, in addition to the 512MB/256MB difference from ALDI site, they even got wrong unit/software - because i know how Route66 looks.

  • Re the DLL failure R66RInstall for the Route 66 software

I contacted the support centre on 1300 886 649 and it sound like it is an Indian call centre. Asked how to get the install working. I left totally confused. Basically the CD is the backup software for the GPS used if it fails and needs to be re-installed. You can get access to the instruction manual on the CD via the PDF.

I asked how could it be reloaded to the GPS when it cannot be loaded to a PC (eg DLL error) and was told that you connect the GPS directly to the CD and it will work. Don't know how this is supposed to connect but I have been assured that when needed the CD via some "magical mystery connection tour" will work.

Sounds like BS to me. … Cheers

  • Purchased my first GPS last week, Tevion P310, from Aldi.

Don't know a lot about GPS units and maps but do no a little about computer systems.

My units works how I would expect it to, whether other makes and models are better I don't know but for $179 mine is good value for money.

It does have Route66 Navigate 7 Software with Navteq maps and does support map dragging.

The Atlas III chipset does support Bluetooth but is not connected in this unit.

It only has 256Mb of Flash memory not 512 as stated in the advertising literature and does not include a "Contacts" file as shown in the Users manual.

In the System Information menu it has USB options of "Mass Storage" or MS Activesync" for connecting to a PC via USB Cable.

The supplied CD includes the PDF User Manual as well as backup system software which is only to be used in case of lost system software on the GPS unit. The GPS unit has to be connected to the computer containing the CD before attempting to install the software to the GPS unit. The software will then be installed directly to the GPS unit not the PC. Have not tried this as I don't have a reason to at the moment.

    Hope this answers some queries.
