    CPU? GPU?

    Intel® CoreTM i5 460M Processor (2.53GHz/3MB cache)

    512MB NVIDIA® GeForce® 310M

This deal is meh. Nothing special here :)

    • +1. bought this laptop a few months ago with the same specs (except the GPU which was only 40 bucks extra though) for 750 delivered.
I think it has been even posted again here for a similar price.

  • RAM and HDD are the most irrelevant specs. We wanna know the CPU :P Not that great of a deal really.

  • hmm.. a bit too lazy to compare… is this config much better than a P8700 (2.53ghz) with a 1GB ATI 4650 /?

  • Sounds kinda expensive to be honest - hard drive is pretty small (seriously 320GB?), GFX is weak (512MB GF 310M, not even a GT), RAM and CPU are standard for that price.
I've seen higher speced laptops at JB Hi Fi for around that price - Asus, Acer and HP.
    Nothing great here.

You people trying to compare this to a consumer grade laptop need to get a reality check. Next day onsite warranty. Matte screen. Backlit keyboard. Include $200 for office business and you get a very hard to beat BUSINESS grade laptop.

    • This is exactly it - the Vostro is in the business line of Dell's laptops. The next day warranty and Office etc are what people want.

But I have seen it cheaper, not sure of the spec change though

    • Do you think people who say RAM and HDD are THE most irrelevant specifications in a laptop are capable of comprehending all that?

    • Yes, if you are looking for a business grade laptop, this is a decent deal (compared to Lenovo, however, not taking into account their usual discounts).

Assuming most people on this site are looking for consumer grade laptops, this isn't a good deal.

Can't speak for the 15.6 inch models, but I do use the 13.3 inch models at work and they're not that great.

Mouse pad is not very responsive, the blue 'track ball' in the middle of the keyboard that looks similar to the red IBM one is also not very responsive, many of these units came with corrupt memory modules which I'm hoping they would have fixed by now.

Just a few things to look out for.

    • I cannot find where they talk about the backlit keyboard? I have one of thse and although it is a good laptop I do have some issues with it.

The main one is the little lights (HDD…etc) are starting to fade the the top button for sound and stuffs have stopped working. Also the fan is a bit loud sometimes but not too much though.

I installed an SSD myself and it is fast.

I need to log a call with Dell which I have not done yet. My issue is that I have a stripped screw at the bottom and have not found a way to remove it yet :)

    • Dell Latitude — Business grade laptop
Dell Vostro — Business grade wannabe

I do agree that the current Vostro 3x00 series is a big step better than their consumer grade Inspiron lines, but still fall short of quality of Latitude, ThinkPad T-series, HP EliteBook, etc.
