  • "Emergency Eject: Manually open the top-load cover (located beneath unit)"

    huh?

    • usually the emergency eject is a button or hole you can stick a paper clip in to open the drive if it gets stuck, most drives have one. they have the button on the front then a little hole if the drive stops responding, or if the power is out and you need to get the disc out of the machine. i guess you could say its a manual release that doesn't require power.

  • Does usb have enough bandwidth to playback bluray?

    • +3

yeah i checked it out a couple of days ago……

According to the Blu-ray Disc specification, 1x speed is defined as 36Mbps. However, as BD-ROM movies will require a 54Mbps data transfer rate the minimum
      From http://www.blu-ray.com/faq/

USB 2.0 has a raw data rate at 480Mbps,

so drive is 4x read (more than double required, 1x not enough 2x is good,) USB is 480, almost 9x more than required.

…or this drive only uses a third of the available USB2 bandwidth at full speed. (36*4= 144) or 54 of the 480 reading a disc.

      • True true makes sense. Only caveat is that I think in the real world, USB2.0 devices never seems to hit 480Mbps. But that's probably more a limitation of the controllers used.

        • true, but with 9x more than required and it only using 1/3 of the available bandwidth of USB2 at full speed, I'm sure you'll be fine even if your usb2.0 doesn't hit the full 480.

  • Cheap…but all out of stock now.

    • their web page still state:
Available in branches: Malvern | Mitcham | Cheltenham | Geelong | Box Hill
there web page only gives you stock in one store at a time, you have to select the store by clicking the "locate branch" link up the top.

looks like they are still getting more in as well…

  • Anyone own one of these? Are they noisy when playing a bluray?

I've got a Samsung internal bluray drive and it's a lot louder playing blurays than my Sony bluray player.

    • Plextor used to make really good DVD drives.
I haven't tried any of their bluray drives but assuming the same quality they should be good.

  • Out of Stock.
Called into branch & they said it was a one off special buy, they were out of stock & weren't getting any more.
Would be good to find another cheap BR option

    • I picked one up from the city store Friday night, looks like they have more stock in again.

  • I own one of these (their "$59 special: has been going for about 2 months now…). It's not bad. Works perfectly in Windows 7 under PowerDVD. I watched Great Migrations and it was flawless, on my 17" Macbook Pro 2.93Ghz with 8GB RAM and SSD drive. for $59, can't go wrong. Sometimes though, the eject button doesn't always pop the lid open, so you either eject via a menu, or unplug and replug the USB in. Aside from that, good deal for $59…

    • there is also a button underneath the drive that manually opens it.
